Claims
- 1. An envelope opening assembly for opening a flap of an envelope such that said flap is moved from a closed position, at an acute angle to the envelope, to an open position, at least at an obtuse angle to the envelope, said assembly comprising:at least one opening element; and a conveying assembly adjacent to said at least one opening element for advancing said envelope into contact with and past said at least one opening element, said at least one opening element being actuated solely by contact with the advancing envelope such that said envelope flap is forced from said closed position to said open position as said envelope advances past said at least one opening element wherein said at least one opening element is freely rotatable about an opening element shaft and is configured to be biased to a first position, and to be rotated to a second position by said envelope when advanced by said conveying assembly and said at least one opening element is configured to rotate from said second position to said first position when said envelope is removed from contact with said at least one opening element.
- 2. The envelope opening assembly of claim 1 wherein said at least one opening element includes an actuating arm portion biased to remain in contact with the envelope as said envelope advances past said at least one opening element.
- 3. The envelope opening assembly of claim 2 wherein said at least one opening element further includes an opening finger portion, said opening finger portion is positioned adjacent to said envelope when said actuating arm portion is in contact with said envelope.
- 4. The envelope opening assembly of claim 3 wherein said conveying assembly comprises a feeding assembly configured to forward said envelope toward said at least one opening element with said envelope flap spaced slightly from a body of said envelope and said envelope flap is then forced open by said opening finger portion as said envelope is advanced past said opening finger portion.
- 5. The envelope opening assembly of claim 4 wherein said feeding assembly spaces said envelope flap slightly from said envelope body by distorting said envelope body.
- 6. The envelope opening assembly of claim 3 wherein said conveying assembly advances said envelope into contact with said actuating arm portion thereby rotating said at least one opening element so that said opening finger portion is positioned adjacent to said envelope.
- 7. The envelope opening assembly of claim 6 wherein said at least one opening element is rotatably mounted to be freely rotated by said envelope.
- 8. The envelope opening assembly of claim 1 wherein said at least one opening element is biased to rest on said envelope while in contact with said envelope.
- 9. A device for moving an envelope flap of an envelope from a closed position to an open position as said envelope is moved along a path by a conveyor assembly, said device comprising:an opening element having an envelope contact portion and a flap contact portion; said opening element being rotatably mounted on a shaft and being moveably positioned in said path of said conveyor assembly; said opening element being biased to a first position wherein said envelope contact portion is positioned in said path of said envelope, such that said envelope contacts said envelope contact portion as said envelope is advanced by said conveyor assembly; said opening element being rotated to a second position from the contact with the advancing envelope, wherein said envelope contact portion rests on said envelope and said flap contact portion is in a flap engaging location, such that said flap contacts said flap contact portion as said envelope is advanced by said conveyor assembly and is pivoted from said close position at an acute angle to said envelope, to said open position at least at an obtuse angle to said envelope.
- 10. The device of claim 9, wherein said opening element is biased from said second position to said first position by means for biasing when said envelope is completely advanced past said opening element.
- 11. The device of claim 10, wherein said means for biasing is the weight of the envelope contact portion.
- 12. A method of moving a flap of an envelope from a closed position to an open position as said envelope is advanced along a path by a conveyor assembly, said method comprising the steps of:rotatably mounting an opening element having an envelope contact portion and a flap contact portion adjacent said conveyor assembly; positioning said opening element in a first position wherein said envelope contact portion is located in said path of said envelope; advancing said envelope along said path such that said envelope contacts said envelope contact portion; rotating said opening element to a second position by the force of the advancing envelope, wherein said envelope contact portion rests on said envelope and said flap contact portion is in a flap engaging location; advancing said envelope past said flap contact portion such that said flap pivots from said closed position at an acute angle to said envelope to said open position at least at an obtuse angle to said envelope upon contacting said flap contact portion.
- 13. The method of claim 12 further comprising the step of: first position upon said envelope being completely advanced past said opening element.
- 14. A system for moving an envelope flap of an envelope having a leading edge and a trailing edge, from a closed position to an open position, said system comprising:a conveyor assembly for moving said envelope along a path, said conveyor assembly having a first end, a second end, an upwardly sloped portion and a downward sloped portion; and an opening element having an envelope contact portion and a flap contact portion, said opening element being pivotally mounted on a shaft and being positioned adjacent said conveyor assembly between said first end and said second end; said opening element being biased to a first position wherein said envelope contact portion is positioned in said path of said envelope, such that said leading edge of said envelope contacts said envelope contact portion as said envelope is advanced by said upwardly sloped portion of said conveyor assembly; said opening element being rotated to a second position from the contact with the advancing envelope, wherein said envelope contact portion rests on said envelope and directs said leading edge along said downwardly sloped portion, and said flap contact portion is in a flap engaging location; said envelope being distorted between said leading edge on said downwardly sloped portion of said conveyor assembly and said trailing edge on said upwardly sloped portion; said flap contacts said flap contact portion as said envelope is further advanced by said conveyor assembly and is pivoted from said closed position at an acute angle to said envelope, to said open position at least at an obtuse angle to said envelope.
