Claims
- 1. A polymeric composition comprising a polymeric binder and 0.25-50 wt % of graphic carbon fibrils, having a diameter between about 3.5 to about 500 nanometers, wherein said composition has IZOD notched impact strength greater than about 2 ft-lbs/in and volume resistivity less than about 1.times.10.sup.11 ohm-cm.
- 2. A composition according to claim 1, wherein, at least a portion of said fibrils are in the form of aggregates.
- 3. A composition according to claim 2, wherein, as measured on an area basis, substantially all of said aggregates are less than about 35 .mu.m in diameter.
- 4. A polymeric composition comprising a polymeric binder and 0.25-50 wt % of graphitic carbon fibrils, having a diameter between about 3.5 to about 500 nanometers, wherein said composition has improved toughness and volume resistivity less than 1.times.10.sup.11 ohm-cm, wherein at least a portion of said fibrils are in the form of aggregates and, wherein, as measured on an area basis, substantially all of said aggregates are less than about 35 .mu.m in diameter.
- 5. A composition according to claim 4, wherein at least 90% of said aggregates, as measured on an area basis, are less than about 25 .mu.m in diameter.
- 6. A composition according to claim 4, wherein, as measured on an area basis, substantially all of said aggregates are less than about 5 .mu.m in diameter.
- 7. A composition according to claim 6, wherein, as measured on an area basis, at least 98% of said aggregates are less than about 3 .mu.m in diameter.
- 8. A composition according to claim 4, wherein the amount of said fibrils in said composition is between about 2-5 wt %.
- 9. A composition according to claim 4, wherein said composition has IZOD notched impact strength greater than about 3 ft-lbs/in.
- 10. A composition according to claim 9, wherein said composition has IZOD notched impact strength greater than about 5 ft-lbs/in.
- 11. A composition according to claim 4, wherein said composition has surface resistivity less than about 1.times.10.sup.12 ohm/sq.
- 12. A composition according to claim 4, wherein said polymeric binder comprises thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers, alloys or blends.
- 13. A polymeric composition comprising a polymeric binder and 0.25-50 wt % of graphic carbon fibrils, said fibrils being substantially cylindrical with a substantially constant diameter, having c-axes substantially perpendicular to their cylindrical axis, being substantially free of pyrolytically deposited carbon, and having a diameter between about 3.5 and 70 nanometers, wherein at least a portion of said fibrils are in the form of aggregates and wherein, as measured on an area basis, substantially all of said aggregates are less than about 35 .mu.m in diameter, and wherein said composition has volume resistivity less than about 1.times.10.sup.11 ohm-cm.
- 14. A composition according to claim 13, wherein at least 90% of said aggregates, as measured on an area basis, are less than about 25 .mu.m in diameter.
- 15. A composition according to claim 13, wherein, as measured on an area basis, substantially all of said aggregates are less than about 5 .mu.m in diameter.
- 16. A composition according to claim 15, wherein, as measured on an area basis, at least 98% of said aggregates are less than about 3 .mu.m in diameter.
- 17. A polymeric composition comprising a polymeric binder and 0.25-50 wt % of graphic carbon fibrils, having a diameter between about 3.5 to about 500 nanometers, wherein at least a portion of said fibrils are in the form of aggregates, said composition being substantially free, as measured on an area basis, of fibril aggregates having a diameter greater than about 35 .mu.m and wherein at least 90%, as measured on an area basis, of said fibril aggregates are less than 25 .mu.m in diameter, wherein said composition has volume resistivity lees than about 1.times.10.sup.11 ohm-cm.
- 18. A composition according to claim 17, wherein substantially all of said aggregates are filled with the polymeric composition, within the volume defined by each individual aggregate.
- 19. A composition according to claim 17, wherein said composition is substantially free, as measured on an area basis, of fibril aggregates greater than about 5 .mu.m.
- 20. A composition according to claim 19, wherein, as measured on an area basis, at least 98% of said aggregates are less than 3 .mu.m in diameter.
- 21. A polymeric composition comprising a polymeric binder and 0.25-50 wt % of graphitic carbon fibrils, having a diameter between about 3.5 to about 500 nanometers, wherein said composition has IZOD notched impact strength greater than 75% of the IZOD notched impact strength of said composition without said fibrils and wherein said composition has volume resistivity less than about 1.times.10.sup.11 ohm-cm.
- 22. A composition according to claim 21, wherein at least a portion of said carbon fibrils are in the form of aggregates.
- 23. A composition according to claim 22, wherein, as measured on an area basis, substantially all of said aggregates are less than about 35 .mu.m in diameter.
- 24. A composition according to claim 23, wherein, as measured on an area basis, substantially all of said aggregates are less than about 5 .mu.m in diameter.
- 25. A composition according to claim 21, wherein said composition has IZOD notched impact strength greater than 85% of the IZOD notched impact strength of said composition without said fibrils.
- 26. A polymeric composition comprising a polymeric binder and 0.25-50 wt % of graphitic carbon fibrils said fibrils being substantially cylindrical with a substantially constant diameter, having c-axes substantially perpendicular to their cylindrical axis, being substantially free of pyrolytically deposited carbon, and having a diameter between about 3.5 and 70 nanometers, wherein at least a portion of said fibrils are in the form of aggregates and wherein, as measured on an area basis, substantially all of said aggregates are less than about 5 .mu.m in diameter.
- 27. A polymeric masterbatch composition comprising a polymeric binder and 1.0-60 wt % of graphitic carbon fibrils, having a diameter between about 3.5 to about 500 nanometers, wherein at least a portion of said fibrils are in the form of aggregates, said composition being substantially free, as measured on an area basis, of fibril aggregated greater than about 50 .mu.m and wherein, as measured on an area basis, at least 90% of said fibril aggregates are less than about 35 .mu.m in diameter.
- 28. A filled polymeric composition having improved toughness and volume resistivity less than 1.times.10.sup.11 ohm-cm, prepared by a process comprising:
- (a) combining between 0.25-50 wt % of graphitic carbon fibrils, having diameter between about 3.5 to about 500 nanometers, with a polymeric material, wherein at least a portion of said fibrils are in the form of aggregates;
- (b) mixing said combination to distribute said fibrils in said polymeric material; and
- (c) applying shear to said combination to break down said aggregates until, as measured on an area basis, substantially all of said aggregates are less than about 35 .mu.m in diameter.
- 29. A polymeric composition comprising a polymeric binder and 0.25-50 wt % of graphitic carbon fibrils, having a diameter between about 3.5 to about 500 nanometers, wherein said composition has tensile elongation of at least 75% of the tensile elongation of said composition without said fibrils and wherein said composition has volume resistivity less than about 1.times.10.sup.11 ohm-cm.
- 30. A composition according to claim 29, wherein at least a portion of said carbon fibrils are in the form of aggregates.
- 31. A composition according to claim 30, wherein, as measured on an area basis, substantially all of said aggregates are less than about 35 .mu.m in diameter.
- 32. A composition according to claim 31, wherein, as measured on an area basis, substantially all of said aggregates are less than about 5 .mu.m in diameter.
- 33. A composition according to claim 29, wherein said composition has tensile elongation of at least 85% of the tensile elongation of said composition without said fibrils.
- 34. A composition according to claim 12, wherein the blend further comprises a compatibilizer.
- 35. A composition according to claim 12, wherein the blend comprises polyphenylene ether and a polyamide.
- 36. A polymeric masterbatch composition prepared by a method comprising the steps of:
- (a) combining 1.0-60 wt % of graphic carbon fibrils, having a diameter between about 3.5 to about 500 nanometers, wherein at least a portion of said fibrils are in the form of aggregates;
- (b) adding letdown resins to facilitate mixing to form a combination; and
- (c) applying shear to said combination to break down aggregates until, as measured on an area basis, substantially all of said aggregates are less than about 35 .mu.m in diameter.
- 37. A composition according to claim 1, wherein the composition has a positive temperature coefficient of resistance.
