Claims
- 1. A crosslinked polyaromatic polymer fiber having a macronet structure and a surface area of at least 100 m.sup.2 /g.
- 2. The fiber of claim 1 wherein the polyaromatic polymer forms the matrix fiber of a heterogeneous polymer fiber, and wherein a plurality of fibers of polyolefin are imbedded longitudinally in the matrix fiber.
- 3. The fiber of claim 1 wherein the polyaromatic polymer is selected from the group consisting of poly(styrene) and poly(alpha-methylstyrene).
- 4. The fiber of claim 2 wherein the polyolefin is selected from the group consisting of polypropylene and polybutenes.
- 5. The fiber of claim 3 wherein the fiber possesses chemical functionality suitable for adsorptive, organic-reactive or ion-exchange phenomena.
- 6. The fiber of claim 5 wherein the functionality is ion-exchange functionality.
- 7. The fiber of claim 6 wherein the functionality is cation-exchange functionality.
- 8. The fiber of claim 7 wherein the functionality is sulfonic acid functionality.
- 9. A crosslinked polyaromatic polymer fiber having a macronet structure and a surface area of at least 100 m.sup.2 /g, prepared by swelling the fiber in a swelling agent for the crosslinked polymer, which swelling agent is removable, does not deactivate Friedel-Crafts catalysts and does not interfere with the formation of a macronet structure, and subsequently introducing additional crosslinking into the polymer to stabilize its swollen structure.
- 10. The fiber of claim 9 wherein the swelling agent is removed subsequent to introducing the additional crosslinking.
