Claims
- 1. A process for the conversion of light hydrocarbons to higher hydrocarbons and olefins comprising contacting said light hydrocarbons with a catalyst comprising a mixed metal oxide having the pyrochlore structure.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein said mixed metal oxide has the general formula A.sub.n B.sub.2 O.sub.7-x wherein A is selected from the group consisting of the mono-, di-, and trivalent metal cations and mixtures thereof; B is selected from the group consisting of the tri-, tetra-, penta-, and hexavalent metal cations and mixtures thereof; 0.ltoreq.n.ltoreq.2.0, and 0.ltoreq..ltoreq.1.0.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein said mixed metal oxide has the general formula A.sub.2 (Sn.sub.2-y A.sub.y)O.sub.7-z wherein A is selected from the group consisting of bismuth, lead, and mixtures thereof; 0.0.ltoreq.y.ltoreq.1.0; and 0.0.ltoreq.z.ltoreq.1.0.
- 4. The process of claim 3 wherein A comprises bismuth, 0.0.ltoreq.y.ltoreq.1.0; and 0.0.ltoreq.z.ltoreq.0.5.
- 5. The process of claim 3 wherein A comprises lead; 0.0<y.ltoreq.1.0; and z is 1.0.
- 6. The process of claim 2 wherein said monovalent metal cation A is selected from the group consisting of potassium, rubidium, cesium, silver, thallium, and mixtures thereof; said divalent metal cation A is selected from the group consisting of calcium, strontium, manganese, cadmium, mercury, tin, lead, and mixtures thereof; and said trivalent metal cation A is selected from the group consisting of yttrium, thallium, bismuth, and the lanthanide series and mixtures thereof.
- 7. The process of claim 6 wherein said metal cation A is selected from the group consisting of potassium, silver, thallium, calcium, manganese, cadmium, tin, lead, bismuth, and mixtures thereof.
- 8. The process of claim 7 wherein said metal cation A is selected from the group consisting of potassium, calcium, lead, bismuth, and mixtures thereof.
- 9. The process of claim 2 wherein said trivalent metal cation B is selected from the group consisting of scandium, yttrium, chromium, manganese, iron, gallium, and mixtures thereof; said tetravalent metal cation B is selected from the group consisting of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, molybdenum, ruthenium, osmium, rhenium, iridium, tin, lead, and mixtures thereof; said pentavalent metal cation B is selected from the group consisting of niobium, tantalum, rhenium, osmium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, antimony, bismuth, and mixtures thereof; and said hexavalent metal cation B is selected from the group consisting of molybdenum, tungsten, tellurium, and mixtures thereof.
- 10. The process of claim 9 wherein said metal cation B is selected from the group consisting of gallium, tin, lead, niobium, antimony, bismuth, molybdenum, tellurium, and mixtures thereof.
- 11. The process of claim 10 wherein said metal cation B is selected from the group consisting of tin, lead, niobium, bismuth, and mixtures thereof
- 12. The process of claim 1 wherein said catalyst is supported on an inert support.
- 13. The process of claim 12 wherein said inert support is selected from the group consisting of silica, alumina, silica-alumina, silica-magnesia, titanium dioxide, magnesia, calcium oxide, zirconia, calcium zirconium oxide, yttrium zirconium oxide, and mixtures thereof.
- 14. The process of claim 1 wherein said catalyst includes a promoter.
- 15. The process of claim 14 wherein said promoter is selected from the group consisting of the alkali metals, the alkaline earth metals, the halogens, the oxyanions, and mixtures thereof.
- 16. The process of claim 15 wherein said alkali metals are selected from the group consisting of lithium, sodium, potassium, and mixtures thereof.
- 17. The process of claim 15 wherein said halogens are selected from the group consisting of chlorine, bromine, and mixtures thereof.
- 18. The process of claim 15 wherein said oxyanions are selected from the group consisting of the phosphates, borates, and mixtures thereof.
- 19. The process of claim 1 including contacting said light hydrocarbons with said catalyst in the presence of an oxidizing agent.
- 20. The process of claim 19 wherein said. oxidizing agent is selected from the group consisting of air and oxygen.
- 21. The process of claim 20 wherein said oxidizing agent comprises air.
- 22. A process for the direct conversion of a feed comprising methane to higher hydrocarbons comprising contacting said methane with a catalyst comprising a mixed metal oxide having the pyrochlore structure.
- 23. The process of claim 22 wherein said mixed metal oxide has the general formula A.sub.n B.sub.2 O.sub.7-x wherein A is selected from the group consisting of the mono-, di-, and trivalent metal cations and mixtures thereof; B is selected from the group consisting of the tri-, tetra-, penta-, and hexavalent metal cations and mixtures thereof; 0.ltoreq.n.ltoreq.2.0, and 0.ltoreq.x.ltoreq.1.0.
- 24. The process of claim 22 wherein said process is carried out without the addition of any additional oxidizing agent, and including intermittently regenerating said catalyst by contacting said catalyst with an oxidizing agent.
- 25. The process of claim 24 wherein said oxidizing agent is selected from the group consisting of air and oxygen.
- 26. The process of claim 25 wherein said oxidizing agent comprises air.
- 27. The process of claim 22 including contacting said methane with said catalyst in the presence of an oxidizing agent.
- 28. The process of claim 27 wherein said oxidizing agent is selected from the group consisting of air and oxygen.
- 29. The process of claim 28 wherein said oxidizing agent comprises air.
- 30. The process of claim 27 wherein said methane and said oxidizing agent are co-fed in a ratio of between about 0.1:1 and 100:1.
- 31. The process of claim 30 wherein said methane and said oxidizing agent are co-fed in a ratio of between about 1:1 and 50:1.
- 32. The process of claim 27 wherein said process is carried out at a total pressure of between about 1 and 100 atmospheres.
- 33. The process of claim 32 wherein said process is carried out at a total pressure of between about 1 and 30 atmospheres.
- 34. The process of claim 30 wherein said methane and said oxidizing agent are fed with an inert gas diluent, said inert gas diluent being present in an amount of up to about 80 volume percent.
- 35. The process of claim 34 wherein said inert gas diluent is present in an amount of between about 7 and 67 volume percent.
- 36. The process of claim 22 conducted at a temperature of between about 300.degree. C. and 1200.degree. C.
- 37. The process of claim 36 conducted at a temperature of between about 500.degree. C. and 900.degree. C.
- 38. A process for the conversion of a feed comprising ethane to ethylene and higher hydrocarbons comprising contacting said feed with a catalyst comprising a mixed metal oxide of the pyrochlore structure and of the formula A.sub.n B.sub.2 O.sub.7 wherein A is selected from the group consisting of the mono-, di-, and trivalent metal cations and mixtures thereof; B is selected from the group consisting tri-, tetra-, penta-, and hexavalent metal cations and mixtures thereof; 0.ltoreq.n.ltoreq.2.0, and 0.ltoreq.x.ltoreq.1.0.
- 39. The process of claim 38 including contacting the feed with the catalyst in the presence of an oxidizing agent.
- 40. The process of claim 40 wherein the oxidizing agent is oxygen.
- 41. The process of claim 38 conducted at a temperature of between about 300.degree. C. and 1200.degree. C.
