Claims
- 1. A sealing arrangement, comprising:
a first mating surface; a second mating surface; and a felt sealing member contacting the first and the second mating surface.
- 2. The arrangement of claim 1, wherein:
a gas passage is located between the first and the second mating surface; and the sealing arrangement is gas impermeable.
- 3. The arrangement of claim 2, wherein:
the first mating surface comprises a ceramic surface of a solid oxide fuel cell; and the second mating surface comprises a metal surface of a solid oxide fuel cell.
- 4. The arrangement of claim 2, wherein the felt sealing member is a gas permeable felt member filled with a gas impermeable material to render the sealing arrangement gas impermeable.
- 5. The arrangement of claim 2, wherein the felt sealing member is a gas permeable felt containing a gas impermeable solid surface to render the sealing arrangement gas impermeable.
- 6. The arrangement of claim 5, wherein the solid surface comprises a melted surface rendered into a solid gas impermeable layer.
- 7. The arrangement of claim 6, wherein the solid layer is formed on surfaces of the sealing member that are parallel and non-parallel to the first and the second mating surfaces.
- 8. The arrangement of claim 2, wherein the felt sealing member is a gas permeable felt member coated with a gas impermeable metal foil to render the sealing arrangement gas impermeable.
- 9. The arrangement of claim 8, wherein the metal foil is formed on surfaces of the sealing member that are parallel and non-parallel to the first and the second mating surfaces.
- 10. The arrangement of claim 2, wherein the felt sealing member is a gas permeable felt member coated with a deposited gas impermeable material layer to render the sealing arrangement gas impermeable.
- 11. The arrangement of claim 10, wherein the deposited layer is formed on surfaces of the sealing member that are parallel and non-parallel to the first and the second mating surfaces.
- 12. The arrangement of claim 2, wherein the felt sealing member is a gas impermeable felt member to render the sealing arrangement gas impermeable.
- 13. The arrangement of claim 2, wherein the sealing member is located in a groove in a first or a second mating surface.
- 14. The arrangement of claim 1, wherein the felt sealing member comprises a metal foam.
- 15. The arrangement of claim 14, wherein the metal foam is selected from a group consisting of nickel foam, Inconel foam and M—Cr—Al—Y foam, where M is selected from at least one of Fe, Co and Ni.
- 16. The arrangement of claim 1, wherein the felt sealing member comprises fibrous silica.
- 17. The arrangement of claim 2, further comprising a gas impermeable sealing material located between the felt sealing member and at least one of the first and the second mating surface.
- 18. The arrangement of claim 17, wherein the sealing material comprises a glass or a glaze.
- 19. A solid oxide fuel cell, comprising:
a ceramic electrolyte; an anode; a cathode; a first mating surface comprising a ceramic surface of the solid oxide fuel cell; a second mating surface comprising a metal surface of the solid oxide fuel cell; a gas passage located between the first and the second mating surfaces; and a gas impermeable felt sealing member contacting the first and the second mating surface.
- 20. The fuel cell of claim 19, wherein the felt sealing member comprises a metal foam or fibrous silica.
