Claims
- 1. A high energy density electrochemical cell having negligible self-discharge characteristics at high temperatures, consisting essentially of (a) a solid cathodic electrode containing active depolarizer material selected from the group consisting of metal oxides, chromates, vanadates, permanganates, molybdates, periodates, and halides, (b) a sulfur dioxide free organic electrolyte comprising an organic solvent having dissolved therein an electrolyte salt, and (c) an anode on which is formed a heat stable coating which is insoluble in the organic electrolyte under open circuit conditions but which is irreversibly dissipated upon cell discharge, said insoluble film having been formed as a reaction product only prior to initial discharge of said cell with an inhibitor gas selected from the group consisting of CO.sub.2, SO.sub.2, O.sub.2, NH.sub.3, and N.sub.2 saturated with respect to water vapor, whereby self discharge of said cell is inhibited until said initial cell discharge.
- 2. A cell as in claim 1 wherein said anode is an active metal selected from the group consisting of Li, Na, K, Mg, and Ca.
- 3. A cell as in claim 2 wherein said anode is Li.
- 4. A cell as in claim 2 wherein said organic solvent is selected from the group consisting of tetrahydrofuran, acetonitrile, propylene carbonate, diemthyl sulfoxide, dimethyl formamide, gamma-butyrolactone, dimethyl carbonate, N:N nitrosodimethylamine, dimethyl sulfite, N:N-dimethyl formamide and mixtures thereof, and said electrolyte salt is one selected from the group consisting of the active metal chlorides, bromides, iodides, perchlorates, hexafluorophosphates, tetrafluoroborates, hexafluoroarsenates, and tetrachloroaluminates.
