Claims
- 1. An article comprising (a) a projectile, (b) an amount of propellant effective to propel said projectile at a predetermined velocity, said propellant comprising ammonium azide and a second material which comprises at least one of a metal, metal-hydride, or silicon, where the ratio of ammonium azide to the second material is selected such that, upon reaction, the propellant forms a solid nitride and a gas phase containing substantial amounts of hydrogen and (c) a casing confining said propellant adjacent to said projectile, said casing having a surface contacting said propellant that is inert with respect to said propellant.
- 2. The article according to claim 1 wherein said inert surface comprises a plastic.
- 3. The article according to claim 1 wherein said inert surface is aluminum, steel, stainless steel, nickel or mixtures thereof.
- 4. The article according to claim 1 further comprising a percussion cap and a primer composition disposed between said percussion cap and said propellant in which the primer produces material that catalytically increases the propellant reaction rate.
- 5. The article according to claim 4, wherein said primer composition comprises an azide or a fulminate.
- 6. The article according to claim 4, wherein said primer composition is copper azide or mercury fulminate.
- 7. The article according to claim 4, further comprising a heat or pressure-degradable membrane interposed between said primer composition and said propellant.
- 8. The article according to claim 1 further comprising an ignitor for introducing direct flow of electric current through the propellant.
- 9. The article according to claim 1 wherein a propellant further includes an additional material capable of modifying the reaction rate.
- 10. The article according to claim 1 wherein at least one of the ammonium azide and the second material is in a powder finely divided form.
- 11. The article according to claim 1 wherein both the ammonium azide and the second material are in a powder finely divided form.
- 12. An article according to claim 1 wherein the second material is selected from the group consisting of aluminum, magnesium, calcium, lithium, zirconium, silicon, beryllium, and mixtures thereof.
- 13. The article according to claim 1 wherein the second material is titanium.
- 14. The article according to claim 1 wherein the second material is boron.
- 15. The article according to claim 1 wherein the second material is selected from the group consisting of aluminum hydride, decaboron, titanium hydride, magnesium hydride, calcium hydride, zirconium hydride, magnesium hydride, aluminum hydride, lithium hydride, lithium aluminum hydride, lithium borohydride, beryllium hydride, and mixtures thereof.
- 16. The article according to claim 1 wherein the second material is titanium hydride.
- 17. The article according to claim 1 wherein the composition further includes hydrazine azide, and the second material is selected from the group consisting of titanium, boron, titanium hydride, and mixtures thereof.
