Claims
- 1. A high voltage electrically insulating composition comprising
- (1) a polymer;
- (2) an additive effective in reducing tracking; and
- (3) a phosphorus-containing compound effective in improving the resistance of the composition to erosion by high voltage stress and selected from the group consisting of
- (a) compounds having a formula selected from ##STR13## wherein n is selected from 0 and 1;
- t is an integer;
- p is integer greater than 1;
- X is independently selected from oxygen and sulphur;
- L is a t-valent organic group which, when t is 1, is selected from groups of formula --R and --XR;
- Q is independently selected from (i) monovalent groups of the formulae --R and --XR and (ii) divalent organic groups formed by two --R groups, two --XR groups, or an --XR group and an --R group attached to the same phosphorus atom; and
- R is independently selected from
- (i) a hydrogen atom;
- (ii) an aryl group;
- (iii) a substituted aryl group;
- (iv) an alkyl group; and
- (v) an alkyl group substituted by at least one group, each of said substituted groups consisting of at least one atom selected from carbon, hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, oxygen, sulphur, nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon; subject to the provisos that
- (1) when n is 1, and each of the Q groups is an --XR group, and at least two of the Q groups are O-alkyl or O-aralkyl groups, the molecular weight of the compound is at least 382;
- (2) when n is O and each of the Q groups is an X-alkyl group, at least one of the X's is oxygen and the molecular weight of the compound is at least 442; and
- (3) no phosphorus atom is directly bonded to more than two hydrogen atoms;
- (b) salts of a compound as defined in (a) containing a salt-forming acidic group, the cation in said salt being selected from ammonium ions, quaternary ammonium ions and metal ions wherein the metal is a metal having an atomic number less than 56 and belonging to one of Groups 1A, IIA, IIB, IIIA, IIIB, IVA, IVB, VA, VB, VIA, VIIB and VIII of the Periodic Table;
- (c) reaction products of at least one compound as defined in (a) and (b) with each other;
- (d) reaction products of at least one compound as defined in (a) and (b) with said polymer (1); and
- (e) reaction products of at least one compound as defined in (a) and (b) with said anti-tracking additive (2).
- 2. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the anti-tracking additive is selected from alumina, alumina hydrates, magnesia and magnesia hydrates.
- 3. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said phosphorus-containing compound is an organic compound.
- 4. A composition according to claim 1 which contains an amount of at least 0.25% by weight of said phosphorus-containing compound as defined in 3(a), (b) and (c) and moieties derived therefrom.
- 5. A composition according to claim 2 wherein the amount is 0.25 to 5% by weight.
- 6. A composition according to claim 1 wherein at least one of the R groups is selected from aryl groups; substituted aryl groups in which each of the substituents is an electron-attracting group; substituted aryl groups in which the substituents contain a total of at least six carbon atoms; and alkyl groups which together with the other R groups contain a total number of carbon atoms which is at least 45.
- 7. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said phosphorus-containing compound is a nickel, cobalt, aluminum, zinc or calcium salt of a said compound (a) wherein at least one of the Q radicals is selected from --OH and SH groups.
- 8. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the compound 3(a) is a compound of formula I in which n is 1, t is 1, and each of l and the Q groups is an --XR group.
- 9. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the compound 3(a) is an organic compound of formula I in which n is O, t is 1, L is an --R group, and each of the Q groups is an --XR group.
- 10. A composition according to claim 9 wherein the organic compound is trioctadecyl phosphite.
- 11. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the compound 3(a) is an organic compound of formula I in which n is 1, t is 1, L is an --R group, and each of the Q groups is an --XR group.
- 12. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the compound 3(a) is an organic compound of formula I in which n is 1, t is an integer from 2 to 4 inclusive, and each of the Q groups is an --XR group.
- 13. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the phosphorus-containing compound is zinc phenylphosphonate.
- 14. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the compound 3(a) is an organic compound of formula I, in which n is 1, t is 1, L is an --R group, one of the Q groups is an --R group and the other Q group is an --XR group.
- 15. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the compound 3(a) is an organic compound of formula I, in which n is O, t is 1, L is an --R group, and each of the Q groups is an --XR group.
- 16. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the compound 3(a) is an organic compound of formula I in which n is O, t is 1, L is an --R group, one of the Q groups in an --R group and the other Q group is an --XR group.
- 17. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the compound 3(a) is an organic compound of formula I in which n is 1 and each of L and the Q groups is an --R group.
- 18. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the organic compound is selected from tris(propionamido) phosphine oxide, trioctyl phosphine oxide and tris(2-ethylhexyl)phosphine oxide.
- 19. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the compound 3(a) is an organic compound of formula I in which n is O and each of L and the Q groups is an --R group.
- 20. A composition according to claim 19 wherein the organic compound is tris(3-cyanoethyl)phosphine.
- 21. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the polymer (1) is selected from polysiloxanes, epoxide resins and polymers which consists essentially of units derived at least one ethylenically unsaturated compound selected from olefins and substituted olefins.
- 22. A composition according to claim 21 wherein the polymer (1) is cross-linked.
- 23. A composition according to claim 1 which also contains up to 1% by weight of carbon black.
- 24. A composition according to claim 1 which is in the form of a recoverable article.
- 25. A composition according to claim 1 which is in the form of an article which has been recovered about a substrate.
- 26. Insulated electrical apparatus in which at least a part of the insulation is a composition as claimed in claim 1.
- 27. Insulated electrical apparatus according to claim 26 which is a high voltage cable having a said composition as at least part of the insulation at its termination.
- 28. A process for the preparation of a polymeric composition which comprises dispersing in a material selected from polymers and polymer precursors an anti-tracking additive and a phosphorus-containing compound as defined in claim 1.
- 29. A process according to claim 28 wherein the said phosphorus-containing compound forms a single phase with said material under the conditions of mixing.
- 30. A composition according to claim 1 which contains from 0.25 to 5% by weight of said phosphorus-containing compound.
- 31. A composition according to claim 1 which contains from 0.35 to 1.5% by weight of said phosphorus-containing compound.
- 32. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the phosphorus-containing compound is calcium phenylphosphonate.
- 33. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the phosphorus-containing compound is nickel phenylphosphonate.
- 34. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the phosphorus-containing compound is di-2-chloroethyl-1,4,5,6,7,7-hexachloro-5-norbornenyl-2-phosphonate.

This application is a continuation-in-part of our copending application Ser. No. 649,797 filed Jan. 16, 1976, now U.S. Pat. No. 4,100,089. Certain of the subject matter described herein is claimed in the commonly assigned applications filed contemporaneously with this application by ourselves jointly with Bernard John Lyons, and by ourselves jointly with Nicodemus Elijs Boyer, application Ser. Nos. 869,269 and 869,268, respectively.
