Claims
- 1. An X-ray generating source and regulated power supply comprising:
- an X-ray generating source;
- a regulator circuit which receives an input signal and regulates at least one of a duration and an amplitude of the input signal to produce a high-voltage output signal for operating the X-ray generating source, said regulator circuit including a plurality of high-voltage solid-state switches arranged in series which share the voltage equally, and a control mechanism which controls each of the switches to produce the output signal; and
- a protection circuit disposed between the regulator circuit and the X-ray generating source for limiting a rate of change of a transient voltage spike produced at the source to a predetermined value so as to protect the regulator circuit.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said regulator circuit further comprises a mechanism responsive to heat which prevents the switches from exceeding a predetermined temperature.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the output signal is sent on output anode and cathode lines to the X-ray generating source and further comprising:
- a current measuring circuit which measures the current on the anode or cathode lines.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:
- a shielded voltage divider circuit which measures the output signal and generates a feedback signal that is utilized by the control circuit.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:
- a cable for connecting the regulator circuit to the X-ray generating source; and
- a discharge circuit which discharges any capacitative voltage on the cable.
- 6. Apparatus for supplying operating power to an X-ray generating source comprising:
- a regulator circuit which receives an input signal and regulates at least one of a duration and an amplitude of the input signal to produce a high-voltage output signal for operating the X-ray generating source, said regulator circuit including a plurality of solid-state switches arranged in series, and a control mechanism which controls each of the switches to produce the output signal; and
- a protection circuit disposed between the regulator circuit and the X-ray generating source for limiting a rate of change of a transient voltage spike produced at the source to a predetermined value so as to protect the regulator circuit;
- wherein the protection circuit further comprises a diode connected in parallel with a capacitor for preventing the voltage across the regulator circuit from reversing polarity.
- 7. An X-ray generating source and regulated power supply comprising:
- an X-ray generating source;
- a regulator circuit which receives a voltage input signal and regulates at least one of a duration and an amplitude of the input signal to produce a high-voltage output signal for operating the X-ray generating source, said regulator circuit including a solid-state switching mechanism which produces the output signal; and
- a protection circuit disposed between the regulator circuit and the X-ray generating source for limiting a rate of change of a transient high-voltage spike produced at the X-ray generating source and protecting the solid-state switching mechanism from damage.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the protection circuit comprises a tuned circuit having an inductor coupled to the source of the transient high-voltage spike.
- 9. Apparatus for supplying operating power to an X-ray generating source comprising:
- a regulator circuit which receives an input signal and regulates at least one of a duration and an amplitude of the input signal to produce a high-voltage output signal for operating the X-ray generating source, said regulator circuit including a plurality of solid-state switches arranged in series, and control mechanism which controls each of the switches to produce the output signal; and
- a protection circuit disposed between the regulator circuit and the X-ray generating source for limiting a rate of change of a transient voltage spike produced at the source to a predetermined value so as to protect the regulator circuit;
- wherein the protection circuit comprises an inductor mechanism intercoupled with a high-voltage clamping mechanism.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the high-voltage clamping mechanism comprises a plurality of series connected voltage limiting devices.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the voltage limiting devices comprise solid-state current conducting devices.
- 12. Apparatus for supplying operating power to an X-ray generating source comprising:
- a regulator circuit which receives an input signal and regulates at least one of a duration and an amplitude of the input signal to produce a high-voltage output signal for operating the X-ray generating source, said regulator circuit including a plurality of solid-state switches arranged in series, and a control mechanism which controls each of the switches to produce the output signal; and
- a protection circuit disposed between the regulator circuit and the X-ray generating source for limiting a rate of change of a transient voltage spike produced at the source to a predetermined value so as to protect the regulator circuit;
- wherein the protection circuit further prevents the high-voltage spike from reversing polarity.
- 13. Apparatus for supplying operating power to an X-ray generating source comprising:
- a regulator circuit which receives an input signal and regulates at least one of a duration and an amplitude of the input signal to produce a high-voltage output signal for operating the X-ray generating source, said regulator circuit including a plurality of solid-state switches arranged in series, and a control mechanism which controls each of the switches to produce the output signal; and
- a protection circuit disposed between the regulator circuit and the X-ray generating source for limiting a rate of change of a transient voltage spike produced at the source to a predetermined value so as to protect the regulator circuit;
- wherein the protection circuit includes a series of diodes for preventing the reversal of polarity.

No. 07/447,388 entitled Discharge Module For X-Ray Cable U.S. Pat. No. 5,056,125; and Ser. No. 07/447,389 entitled X-Ray Tube Current Measuring Apparatus now abandoned.
