Claims
- 1. A process for stably adhering superabsorbent polymeric powder onto a substrate comprising:
a) Providing a substrate; b) Applying a superabsorbent polymeric powder to a surface portion of said substrate; c) Further applying a thermoplastic resinous powder to said substrate to form a coating; and d) Heating said coating to cause at least a portion of said thermoplastic resinous powder to melt and thereby causing said superabsorbent polymeric powder to become stably adhered to said substrate.
- 2. The process of claim 1, wherein said substrate comprises a polymeric material.
- 3. The process of claim 2, wherein said polymeric material is permeable.
- 4. The process of claim 3, wherein said polymeric material is fibrous.
- 5. The process of claim 3, wherein said polymeric material is a sheet having openings extending through said sheet.
- 6. The process of claim 1, wherein said thermoplastic resinous powder melts at a temperature below about 200° C.
- 7. The process of claim 1, wherein said thermoplastic resinous powder is a member selected from the group consisting of vinyls, polyolefins, nylons, polyesters, and copolymers of ethylene and vinyl alcohol, and admixtures thereof.
- 8. The process of claim 7, wherein said thermoplastic resinous powder comprises a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl alcohol.
- 9. The process of claim 1, wherein said substrate is moistened prior to step b) and said superabsorbent polymeric powder is electrostatically charged prior to being applied to said substrate.
- 10. A process for stably adhering superabsorbent polymeric powder onto a substrate comprising:
a) Providing a substrate; b) Applying a thermoplastic resinous powder to a surface portion of said substrate; c) Further applying a superabsorbent polymeric powder to said substrate to form a coating; and d) Heating said coating to cause at least a portion of said thermoplastic resinous powder to melt and thereby causing said superabsorbent polymeric powder to become stably adhered to said substrate.
- 11. The process of claim 10, wherein said substrate comprises a polymeric material.
- 12. The process of claim 11, wherein said polymeric material is permeable.
- 13. The process of claim 12, wherein said polymeric material is fibrous.
- 14. The process of claim 12, wherein said polymeric material is a sheet having openings extending through said sheet.
- 15. The process of claim 10, wherein said thermoplastic resinous powder melts at a temperature below about 200° C.
- 16. The process of claim 10, wherein said thermoplastic resinous powder is a member selected from the group consisting of vinyls, polyolefins, nylons, polyesters, and copolymers of ethylene and vinyl alcohol, and admixtures thereof.
- 17. The process of claim 16, wherein said thermoplastic resinous powder comprises a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl alcohol.
- 18. The process of claim 10, wherein said substrate is moistened prior to step b) and said thermoplastic resinous powder is electrostatically charged prior to being applied to said substrate.
- 19. A process for stably adhering a superabsorbent polymeric powder onto a substrate comprising:
a) Providing a substrate; b) Applying a mixture comprising a superabsorbent polymeric powder and a thermoplastic resinous powder to a surface of said substrate to form a coating; and c) Heating said coating to cause at least a portion of said thermoplastic resinous powder to melt and thereby causing said superabsorbent polymeric powder to become stably adhered to said substrate.
- 20. The process of claim 19, wherein said substrate comprises a polymeric material.
- 21. The process of claim 20, wherein said polymeric material is permeable.
- 22. The process of claim 21, wherein said polymeric material is fibrous.
- 23. The process of claim 21, wherein said polymeric material is a sheet having openings extending through said sheet.
- 24. The process of claim 19, wherein said thermoplastic resinous powder melts at a temperature below about 200° C.
- 25. The process of claim 19, wherein said thermoplastic resinous powder is a member selected from the group consisting of vinyls, polyolefins, nylons, polyesters, and copolymers of ethylene and vinyl alcohol, and admixtures thereof.
- 26. The process of claim 25, wherein said thermoplastic resinous powder comprises a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl alcohol.
- 27. The process of claim 19, wherein said mixture contains from about 5 wt % to about 20 wt % thermoplastic resinous powder, balance essentially superabsorbent polymeric powder.
- 28. The process of claim 27, wherein said mixture contains from about 5 wt % to about 10 wt % thermoplastic resinous powder, balance essentially superabsorbent polymeric powder.
- 29. The process of claim 19, wherein said substrate is moistened prior to step b) and said powder mixture is electrostatically charged prior to being applied to said substrate.
- 30. A process for stably adhering a superabsorbent polymeric powder onto a substrate comprising:
a) Providing a substrate; b) Moistening said substrate by contacting said substrate with a liquid comprising water; c) Applying an electrostatically charged mixture of curable coating powder and superabsorbent polymeric powder to said substrate to form a coating thereon; and d) Curing said curable coating powder thereby causing said coating to become stably adhered to said substrate.
- 31. A process for stably adhering a superabsorbent polymeric powder onto a substrate comprising:
a) Providing a substrate; b) Moistening said substrate by contacting said substrate with a liquid comprising water; c) Applying an electrostatically charged curable coating powder to said substrate to form a coating thereon; d) Further applying a superabsorbent polymeric powder to said substrate to form a coating thereon; and e) Curing said curable coating powder thereby causing said superabsorbent polymeric powder to become stably adhered to said substrate.
- 32. A process for stably adhering a superabsorbent polymeric powder onto a substrate comprising:
a) Providing a substrate; b) Moistening said substrate by contacting said substrate with a liquid comprising water; c) Applying an electrostatically charged superabsorbent polymeric powder to said substrate to form a coating thereon; d) Further applying a curable resinous powder to said substrate to form a coating thereon; and e) Curing said curable coating powder thereby causing said superabsorbent polymeric powder to become stably adhered to said substrate.
- 33. A powder mixture comprising a thermoplastic resinous powder and a superabsorbent polymeric powder.
- 34. The powder mixture of claim 33, wherein said thermoplastic resinous powder melts at a temperature below about 200° C.
- 35. The powder mixture of claim 33, wherein said thermoplastic resinous powder is a member selected from the group consisting of vinyls, polyolefins, nylons, polyesters, and copolymers of ethylene and vinyl alcohol, and admixtures thereof.
- 36. The powder mixture of claim 35, wherein said thermoplastic resinous powder comprises a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl alcohol.
- 37. The powder mixture of claim 33, wherein said mixture contains from about 5 wt % to about 20 wt % thermoplastic resinous powder, balance essentially superabsorbent polymeric powder.
- 38. The powder mixture of claim 37, wherein said mixture contains from about 5 wt % to about 10 wt % thermoplastic resinous powder, balance essentially superabsorbent polymeric powder.
- 39. A powder mixture comprising a curable resinous powder and a superabsorbent powder.
- 40. The powder mixture of claim 39, wherein said curable resinous powder is radiation curable.
- 41. The powder mixture of claim 39, wherein said curable resinous coating powder is thermally curable.
- 42. The powder mixture of claim 39, wherein said mixture contains from about 5 wt % to about 20 wt % curable resinous powder, balance essentially superabsorbent polymeric powder.
- 43. The powder mixture of claim 42, wherein said mixture contains from about 5 wt % to about 10 wt % curable resinous powder, balance essentially superabsorbent polymeric powder.
- 44. The powder mixture of claim 39, wherein said curable resinous powder is capable of being cured at temperatures below about 300° F.
- 45. A product for absorbing aqueous liquids comprising a substrate having a coating of an at least partially melted thermoplastic resin and a superabsorbent polymeric powder.
- 46. The product of claim 45, wherein said substrate comprises polymeric material.
- 47. The product of claim 46, wherein said polymeric material is fibrous.
- 48. The product of claim 46, wherein said polymeric material is a sheet having openings extending through said sheet.
- 49. The product of claim 45, wherein said thermoplastic resin has a melting point below about 200° C.
- 50. The process of claim 45, wherein said thermoplastic resinous powder is a member selected from the group consisting of vinyls, polyolefins, nylons, polyesters, and copolymers of ethylene and vinyl alcohol, and admixtures thereof.
- 51. The product of claim 50, wherein said thermoplastic resinous powder comprises a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl alcohol.
- 52. The product of claim 45, wherein said product comprises a diaper.
- 53. The product of claim 45, wherein said product comprises an adult incontinence product.
- 54. The product of claim 45, wherein said product comprises a feminine hygiene product.
- 55. The product of claim 45, wherein said product comprises a cleaning product.
- 56. The product of claim 45, wherein said product comprises a water-containing liquid retention element.
- 57. A product for absorbing aqueous liquids comprising a substrate having a coating of an at least partially cured resin and a superabsorbent polymeric powder.
- 58. The product of claim 57, wherein said substrate comprises polymeric material.
- 59. The product of claim 57, wherein said polymeric material is fibrous.
- 60. The product of claim 58, wherein said polymeric material is a sheet having openings extending through said sheet.
- 61. The product of claim 57, wherein said curable resinous powder has a curing temperature below about 300° F.
- 62. The product of claim 57, wherein said product comprises a diaper.
- 63. The product of claim 57, wherein said product comprises an adult incontinence product.
- 64. The product of claim 57, wherein said product comprises a feminine hygiene product.
- 65. The product of claim 57, wherein said product comprises a cleaning product.
- 66. The product of claim 57, wherein said product comprises a water-containing liquid retention element.
- 67. A water-containing liquid retention element comprising a substrate having openings extending through said substrate; said substrate having a coating stably adhered thereto comprising a superabsorbent polymeric powder and an at least partially melted thermoplastic resin.
- 68. The element of claim 67, wherein said superabsorbent polymeric powder comprises an anionic polyacrylamide polymer.
- 69. A water-containing liquid retention element comprising a substrate having openings extending through said substrate; said substrate having a coating stably adhered thereto comprising a superabsorbent polymeric powder and an at least partially cured resin.
- 70. The element of claim 69, wherein said superabsorbent polymeric powder comprises an anionic polyacrylamide polymer.
- 71. A process for stably adhering a superabsorbent polymeric powder onto a thermoplastic resinous substrate comprising:
(a) Providing a thin film of a thermoplastic resin; (b) Applying a superabsorbent polymeric powder onto the surface of said film; and (c) Heating said film and superabsorbent polymeric powder to cause said film to melt and said superabsorbent polymeric powder to become stably adhered to said film.
- 72. The process of claim 71, wherein said thermoplastic resinous film is a member selected from the group consisting of vinyls, polyolefins, nylons, polyesters, and copolymers of ethylene and vinyl alcohol, and admixtures thereof.
- 73. The process of claim 72, wherein said thermoplastic resinous film comprises a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl alcohol.
- 74. A process for stably adhering a superabsorbent polymeric powder onto a thermoplastic resinous substrate comprising:
(a) Providing a thin film of a thermoplastic resin; (b) Applying a superabsorbent polymeric powder onto the surface of said film; and (c) Heating said film and superabsorbent polymeric powder to cause said film to soften and said superabsorbent polymeric powder to become stably adhered to said film.
- 75. The process of claim 74, wherein said thermoplastic resinous film is a member selected from the group consisting of vinyls, polyolefins, nylons, polyesters, and copolymers of ethylene and vinyl alcohol, and admixtures thereof.
- 76. The process of claim 75, wherein said thermoplastic resinous film comprises a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl alcohol.
- 77. The process of claim 74, further comprising applying pressure to said film and applied superabsorbent polymeric powder to further enhance adhesion.
- 78. The process of claim 77, wherein said pressure is applied by a roll.
- 79. A process for stably adhering a superabsorbent polymeric powder onto a thermoplastic resinous substrate comprising:
(a) Providing a thin film of a thermoplastic resin; (b) Heating said superabsorbent polymeric powder; and (c) Applying said heated powder to said film to cause melting of said film at a point of contact between said powder and said film, thereby stably adhering said powder to said film.
- 80. The process of claim 79, wherein said thermoplastic resinous film is a member selected from the group consisting of vinyls, polyolefins, nylons, polyesters, and copolymers of ethylene and vinyl alcohol, and admixtures thereof.
- 81. The process of claim 80, wherein said thermoplastic resinous film comprises a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl alcohol.
- 82. A process for stably adhering a superabsorbent polymeric powder onto a thermoplastic resinous substrate comprising:
(a) Providing a thin film of a thermoplastic resin; (b) Heating said superabsorbent polymeric powder; and (c) Applying said heated powder to said film to cause softening of said film at a point of contact between said powder and said film, thereby stably adhering said powder to said film.
- 83. The process of claim 82, wherein said thermoplastic resinous film is a member selected from the group consisting of vinyls, polyolefins, nylons, polyesters, and copolymers of ethylene and vinyl alcohol, and admixtures thereof.
- 84. The process of claim 83, wherein said thermoplastic resinous film comprises a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl alcohol.
- 85. The process of claim 82, further comprising applying pressure to said film and applied superabsorbent polymeric powder to further enhance adhesion.
- 86. The process of claim 85, wherein said pressure is applied by a roll.
