Claims
- 1. A thermoplastic resin composition having high impact strength comprising:
- A. from about 80 to about 15 parts by weight of a resinous composition comprising a combination of:
- (a) a copolyetherester resin;
- (b) a copolyetherimide ester resin; or
- (c) a mixture of (a) and (b); and
- (d) at least one polyester resin having an intrinsic viscosity of at least about 0.4 dl/g as measured in a 60:40 phenol tetrachloroethane mixture at 30.degree. C., and correspondingly,
- B. from 20 to 85 parts by weight of
- at least one filler selected from, barium sulfate, zirconium oxide, zirconium silicate or strontium sulfate.
- 2. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein filler B comprises from 30 to 75 parts by weight of barium sulfate.
- 3. A composition as defined in claim 1, wherein aid Component A comprises (a) a copolyether ester resin.
- 4. A composition as defined in claim 1, wherein said Component A comprises (b) a copolyetherimide ester resin.
- 5. A composition as defined in claim 4, wherein said copolyetherimide ester resin A(b) comprises units derived from (i) at least one diol having a molecular weight of less than 250, (ii) at least one dicarboxylic acid or chemical equivalent thereof having two functional groups which perform substantially like dicarboxylic acids in reaction with glycols and diols in forming polyesters, and (iii) a set of reactants selected from (a) (1) at least one poly(oxyalkylene) diamine having an average molecular weight of at least about 600 and (2) at least one tricarboxylic acid or a derivative thereof, or (b) at least one polyalkylene diimide diacid having an average molecular weight greater than about 700; or a mixture of such reactants, and, optionally, (iv) a poly(oxyalkylene)diol.
- 6. A composition as defined in claim 5 wherein the diol component comprises 60 to 100 mole percent 1,4-butanediol.
- 7. A composition as defined in claim 5 wherein the dicarboxylic acid component (ii) comprises from 60 to 100 percent of dimethyl terephthalate.
- 8. A composition as defined in claim 5 wherein (iii) is (a).
- 9. A composition as defined in claim 5 wherein (iii) is (b).
- 10. A composition as defined in claim 5 wherein (iv) is polytetramethylene glycol.
- 11. A composition as defined in claim 5 wherein (iv) is polyethylene glycol.
- 12. A composition as defined in claim 5 wherein the polyoxyalkylene diimide diacid component (b) is derived from one or more polyoxyalkylene diamines and one or more tricarboxylic acid compounds containing two vicinal carboxyl groups or an anhydride group and an additional carboxyl group, and is characterized by the following formula: ##STR8## wherein each R is independently selected from the group consisting of C.sub.2 to C.sub.20 aliphatic and cycloaliphatic trivalent organic radicals and C.sub.6 to C.sub.20 aromatic trivalent organic radicals; each R' is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 aliphatic and cycloaliphatic monovalent organic radicals and C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 aromatic monovalent organic radicals, and G is the radical remaining after removal of the hydroxy groups of a long chain ether glycol having an average molecular weight of from about 600 to 12000.
- 13. A composition as defined in claim 12 wherein the polyoxyalkylene diimide diacid is derived from trimellitic anhydride and a polyoxyalkylene diamine selected from the group consisting of polypropylene oxide diamine and a copoly(ethylene oxide-propylene oxide)diamine having predominately polyethylene oxide in the backbone.
- 14. A composition as defined in claim 5 wherein the weight ratio of (iii) to (ii) is from about 0.05 to 3.0:1.
- 15. A composition as defined on claim 14 wherein said weight ratio of (iii) to (ii) is from about 0.10 to about 2.5:1.
- 16. A composition as defined in claim 15 wherein said weight ratio of (iii) to (ii) is from about 0.20 to 2.0:1.
- 17. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein components (a), (b), or (c) comprise from 1 to 99 parts by weight to, correspondingly, from 99 to 1 parts by weight of component (d).
- 18. A composition as defined in claim 1, wherein component (d) comprises a polyester of the formula: ##STR9## wherein n represents a whole number between about 2 and about 12.
- 19. A composition as defined in claim 18 wherein said polyester comprises poly(1,4-butylene terephthalate).
- 20. A composition as defined in claim 18 wherein said polyester comprises poly(ethylene terephthalate).
- 21. A composition as defined in claim 18 wherein said polyester comprises a mixture of poly(1,4-butylene terephthalate) and poly(ethylene terephthalate).
- 22. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein said filler B comprises from 30 to 75 parts by weight.
- 23. A composition as defined in claim 1 which also includes an external lubricant.
- 24. A composition as defined in claim 1 which also includes an antioxidant.
- 25. A composition as defined in claim 1 which also includes a flame retardant amount of a flame retardant agent.
- 26. A molding composition as defined in claim 1 which also includes an effective amount of a glass fiber reinforcing agent.
- 27. An article shaped from a composition as defined in claim 1.
- 28. A thermoplastic resin composition having high impact strength consisting essentially of
- A. from about 50 to about 15 parts by weight of a resinous composition consisting essentially of a combination of:
- (a) a copolyetherester resin;
- (b) a copolyetherimide ester resin; or
- (c) a mixture of (a) and (b); and
- (d) a polyester resin having an intrinsic viscosity of at lest about 0.4 dl/g as measured in a 60:40 phenol tetrachloroethane mixture at 30.degree. C., and, corresspondingly,
- B. from 50 to 85 parts by weight of:
- (a) a filler selected from zinc oxide, barium sulfate, zirconium oxide, zirconium silicate or strontium sulfate; or
- (b) a mixture of any of such fillers.
- 29. A thermoplastic resin composition having high impact strength consisting essentially of
- A. from about 40 to about 15 parts by weight of a resinous composition consisting essentially of a combination of:
- (a) a copolyetherester resin;
- (b) a copolyetherimide ester resin; or
- (c) a mixture of (a) and (b); and
- (d) a polyester resin having an intrinsic viscosity of at least about 0.4 dl/g as measured in a 60:40 phenol tetrachloroethane mixture at 30.degree. C., and, correspondingly,
- B. from 60 to 85 parts by weight of:
- (a) a filler selected from zinc oxide, barium sulfate, zirconium oxide, zirconium silicate or strontium sulfate; or
- (b) a mixture of any of such fillers.
