Claims
- 1. A method for the manufacture of an asymmetric polyimide or copolyimide polymer membrane for gas separation, said polyimide or copolyimide being derived from diphenyldi(trifluoromethyl)methane 3,4,3',4'-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride and either a monoaromatic metadiamine or a mixture of monoaromatic metadiamines, said method comprising the following steps:
- (a) dissolving said polyimide or copolyimide in a volatile solvent containing at least 85% by weight of 1,4 dioxane and 0 to 15% by weight of N-methyl 2-pyrrolidone, N,N-dimethylacetamide and/or gamma-butyrolactone,
- (b) applying a film of a solution of polyimide or copolyimide of step (a) to a support or extruding a tube of a solution of polyimide or copolyimide of step (a),
- (c) partially evaporating the solvent from the film or tube,
- (d) bringing the film or tube into contact with a liquid coagulant comprising a mixture of between 15 and 99% by weight of acetic acid and between 1 and 85% by weight of water, and
- (e) drying the coagulated film or tube.
- 2. A method according to claim 1, further comprising a step:
- (f) heating the coagulated film or tube after drying.
- 3. A method according to claim 2 further comprising a step
- (g) depositing a layer of silicone elastomer onto the skin of said membrane from a solution of preelastomer in a low molecular weight hydrocarbon.
- 4. A method according to claim 1, wherein the solvent for the polyimide is a liquid containing at least 85% by weight of 1,4-dioxane and between 0 and 15% by weight of N-methyl 2-pyrrolidone and wherein the liquid coagulant is a mixture between 15% and 60% by weight of acetic acid and between 40% and 85% by weight of water.
- 5. Method according to claim 1 wherein the monoaromatic metadiamine is 1,3-diaminobenzene, wherein the solvent for the polyimide is a liquid containing at least 85% by weight of 1,4-dioxane and 0 to 15% by weight of N,N-dimethylacetamide and wherein the liquid coagulant is a mixture of 15% to 50% by weight of acetic acid and 50% to 85% by weight of water.
- 6. A method according to claim 1, wherein the monoaromatic metadiamine is 1,3-diaminobenzene, wherein the solvent for the polyimide is a liquid containing at least 85% by weight of 1,4-dioxane and between 0 and 15% by weight of gamma-butyrolactone and wherein the liquid coagulant is a mixture between 15% and 45% by weight of acetic acid and between 55% and 85% by weight of water.
- 7. A method according to claim 1, wherein the solvent for the polyimide is a liquid containing 94% to 98% by weight of 1,4-dioxane and 2% to 6% by weight of N-methyl 2-pyrrolidone, N,N-dimethylacetamide and/or gamma-butyrolactone.
- 8. A method according to claim 1, wherein the total polyimide or copolyimide concentration in the solution of polyimide or copolyimide of step (a) is between 10% and 35% by weight.
- 9. A method according to claim 1, wherein the polyimide and copolyimide concentration of the solution of polyimide and copolyimide of step (a) is between 12% and 30% for a flat membrane and between 15% and 35% by weight for a hollow fiber.
- 10. A method according to claim 1 further comprising a step
- (g) depositing a layer of silicone elastomer onto the skin of said membrane from a solution of preelastomer in a low molecular weight hydrocarbon.
