- a slider block having at least two bores therein through which the at least two legs extend and being adjustably clampable along the at least two legs of the convoluted portion so that the spring rate of the torque rod spring assembly may be varied.
- 2. The torque rod spring assembly of claim 1 further comprising:
- a pivot block having at least two apertures therein through which the at least two legs of the convoluted portion pass with the first and second end portions extending generally perpendicular to the axis of the apertures;
- wherein the first and second end portions can be translated through an arc relative to the pivot block causing the convoluted portion to twist in torsion storing energy.
- 3. The torque rod spring assembly of claim 2 wherein the slider block is located intermediate between the pivot block and the U-shaped bight portion.
- 4. The torque rod spring assembly of claim 2 wherein the pivot block is adjustably clampable along the convoluted portion to change the spring rate of the torque rod spring assembly.
- 5. The torque rod spring assembly of claim 1 wherein:
- the convoluted portion includes at least four generally parallel legs and at least three U-shaped bight portions connected therebetween; and
- the slider block has at least four bores therein.
- 6. A boxless hinge assembly for pivotally supporting a deck lid on the rear shelf of a vehicle body comprising:
- first and second pairs of hinge straps each having one strap for attachment to the deck lid and a cooperating strap for attachment to the rear shelf; and
- torque rod means having a first end secured to the rear shelf with a pivot portion adjacent thereto extending between cooperating straps of one pair to pivotally connect such pair for pivoting the deck lid on the rear shelf, and said torque rod means having a second end connected to that strap of a pair attached to the deck lid whereby the torque rod means is tensioned when the deck lid is closed and assists when the deck lid is opened.
- 7. The boxless hinge assembly of claim 6 wherein the torque rod means comprises:
- first and second torque rods each having a first end with a pivot portion adjacent thereto, and a second end;
- wherein the first torque rod has its first end secured to the rear shelf with its pivot portion extending between cooperating straps of the first pair of hinge straps to provide a pivot therebetween and its second end connected to the second pair of hinge straps;
- wherein the second torque rod has its first end secured to the rear shelf with its pivot portion extending between cooperating straps of the second pair of hinge straps to provide a pivot therebetween and its second end connected to the first pair of hinge straps.
- 8. The boxless hinge assembly of claim 7 further comprising an insert mounted within the cooperating strap for attachment to the rear shelf of the first pair of hinge straps, the pivot portion of the first torque rod extending through the insert and allowing for pivotal movement between the first pair of hinge straps and the first torque rod.
- 9. The boxless hinge assembly of claim 8 wherein the second end of the second torque rod extends through the insert within the first pair of hinge straps.
- 10. The boxless hinge assembly of claim 8 wherein the insert includes a main body and a retainer portion, the main body cooperating with the retainer portion to pivotally capture the pivot portion of the first torque rod.
- 11. The boxless hinge assembly of claim 8 further comprising a second insert mounted within the cooperating strap for attachment to the rear shelf of the second pair of hinge straps, the pivot portion of the second torque rod extending through the second insert and allowing for pivotal movement between the second pair of hinge straps and the second torque rod.
- 12. The boxless hinge assembly of claim 6 further comprising a bracket with a plurality of notches, wherein the bracket is attached to the first pair of hinge straps, wherein the second end of the second torque rod has a descending portion adjustably anchored in one of the plurality of notches of the bracket to establish a preload on the second torque rod.
- 13. The boxless hinge assembly of claim 6 further comprising first and second brackets adapted to secure the first end of the first torque rod to the rear shelf, the one pair of hinge straps pivotally connected to the pivot portion intermediate the first and second brackets.
- 14. The boxless hinge assembly of claim 6 wherein the torque means comprises:
- a torque rod having a first end with a pivot portion adjacent thereto, and a second end;
- wherein the torque rod has its first end secured to the rear shelf with its pivot portion extending between cooperating straps of the first pair of hinge straps to provide a pivot therebetween and its second end connected to the first pair of hinge straps.
- 15. The boxless hinge assembly of claim 14 wherein the torque rod has a convoluted portion extending between the second end and the pivot portion, the convoluted portion having at least two generally parallel legs and at least one U-shaped bight portion connected therebetween.
- 16. The boxless hinge assembly of claim 15 wherein the convoluted portion includes at least four legs and at least three U-shaped bight portions connected therebetween.
- 17. The boxless hinge assembly of claim 14 further comprising an insert mounted within the cooperating strap for attachment to the rear shelf of the first pair of hinge straps, the pivot portion of the torque rod extending through the insert and allowing for pivotal movement between the first pair of hinge straps and the torque rod.
- 18. The boxless hinge assembly of claim 17 wherein the second end of the torque rod extends through the insert.
- 19. The boxless hinge assembly of claim 17 wherein the insert includes a main body and a retainer portion, the main body cooperating with the retainer portion to pivotally capture the pivot portion of the torque rod.
- 20. The boxless hinge assembly of claim 14 further comprising a bracket with a plurality of notches, wherein the bracket is attached to the first pair of hinge straps, wherein the second end of the torque rod has a descending portion adjustably anchored in one of the plurality of notches of the bracket to establish a preload on the torque rod.
