Claims
- 1. A thermal printer for forming an image on a thermal print medium, said medium comprising a donor from which a dye is transferred by sublimation to a receiver as a result of heating dye in the donor, said printer comprising:
- a source of radiation;
- means for supporting a thermal print medium; said supporting means including a first support means for supporting said donor, a second support means for supporting said receiver, and vacuum means for supplying a vacuum to said first and second support means;
- a cylindrical roller that is pivotably movable into contact with said donor element to press said donor element into close contact with said receiver element;
- means for directing radiation from said source in the form of a dot on said thermal print medium in order to provide sufficient thermal energy to said donor to cause dye to transfer to the receiver; and
- means for moving said medium and said source relative to each other to form said image from a series of dots on said medium.
- 2. A thermal printer, as defined in claim 1 wherein said cylindrical roller is pivotable into contact with said donor element prior to printing.
