Claims
- 1. A document having an authentication feature formed thereupon, said document comprising:a substrate having an outer surface; and an authenticating element covering at least a portion of said outer surface and capable of generating at least one color pattern constituting a first visually identifiable feature for verifying the authenticity of said document; said authenticating element including a diffractive structure and a non-diffractive micro-graphical feature providing security information embedded within said diffractive structure and each of said diffractive structure and said non-diffractive feature being integrally formed within a single common layer of material; said diffractive structure generating a visually perceptible color pattern which is dependent upon a direction of illumination and/or a direction of visual viewing; and said non-diffractive micro-graphical feature having a substantially constant visually perceptible appearance substantially independent of the direction of said illumination and/or said direction of visual viewing.
- 2. A document as in claim 1, wherein said micro-graphical feature comprises a plurality of non-diffractive micro-graphical features embedded in a surround of diffractive structure.
- 3. A document as in claim 2, wherein said micro-graphical features are selected from the set consisting of alphabetic symbols or characters, numerical symbols or characters, and combinations thereof, and wherein said symbols or characters may be in any alphabet or symbol set.
- 4. A document as in claim 3, wherein said substrate comprises a paper substrate.
- 5. A document as in claim 3, wherein said document is selected from the group consisting of currency, a official document, a legal instrument, a financial instrument, a commercial instrument, a credit card, and article packaging including article packaging for items selected from the group consisting of software and art.
- 6. A document as in claim 3 wherein said micro-graphical feature comprises alpha-numeric text devoid of any diffraction fringes and having discernable feature components as small as six microns, and said diffractive fringe structures having spacings as small as one micron.
- 7. A document as in claim 3 wherein said micro-graphical feature has discernable feature components of substantially 6 micron.
- 8. A document having an authentication feature formed thereupon, said document comprising:a substrate having an outer surface; an authenticating element covering at least a portion of said outer surface and capable of generating at least one color pattern constituting a first visually identifiable feature for verifying the authenticity of said document; said authenticating element including a diffractive structure and a non-diffractive micro-graphical feature providing security information embedded within said diffractive structure and each of said diffractive structure and said non-diffractive micro-graphical feature being integrally formed within a single common layer of material, said micro-graphical feature comprising a plurality of non-diffractive graphical structures including at least one alpha-numerical character embedded in a surround of diffractive structure; said diffractive structure generating a visually perceptible color pattern which is dependent upon a direction of illumination and/or a direction of visual viewing; and said non-diffractive micro-graphical feature having a substantially constant visually perceptible appearance substantially independent of the direction of said illumination and/or said direction of visual viewing.
- 9. A document as in claim 8, wherein said substrate comprises a paper substrate.
- 10. A document as in claim 8, wherein said substrate comprises a polymeric substrate.
- 11. A document as in claim 8, wherein said document is an item of currency.
- 12. A document as in claim 8, wherein said document is selected from the group consisting of currency, a official document, a legal instrument, a financial instrument, a commercial instrument, a credit card, and article packaging including article packaging for items selected from the group consisting of software, and art.
- 13. A document as in claim 8, wherein said micro-graphical feature comprises alpha-numeric text devoid of any diffraction fringes and having discernable feature components as small as six microns, and said diffractive fringe structures having spacings as small as one micron.
- 14. A document as in claim 8 wherein said micro-graphical feature has discernable feature components of substantially 6 micron.
- 15. A document as in claim 8, wherein:said document is an item of currency; said substrate is selected from the group consisting of a paper substrate and a polymeric substrate; said micro-graphical feature comprises alpha-numeric text substantially devoid of any diffraction fringes and having discernable feature components as small as six microns; and said diffractive fringe structures have spacings as small as one micron.
- 16. A diffractive authentication structure comprising:an authenticating element capable of generating at least one color pattern constituting a first visually identifiable feature; said authenticating element including a diffractive structure and a non-diffractive micro-graphical feature providing security information embedded within said diffractive structure and each of said diffractive structure and said non-diffractive micro-graphical feature being integrally formed within a common layer of material, said micro-graphical feature comprising a plurality of non-diffractive graphical structures including at least one alpha-numerical character embedded in a surround of diffractive structure; said diffractive structure generating a visually perceptible color pattern which is dependent upon a direction of illumination and/or a direction of visual viewing; and said non-diffractive micro-graphical feature having a substantially constant visually perceptible appearance substantially independent of the direction of said illumination and/or said direction of visual viewing.
- 17. A diffractive authentication structure as in claim 16, wherein said micro-graphical feature comprises alpha-numeric text devoid of any diffraction fringes and having discernable feature components as small as six microns, and said diffractive fringe structures having spacings as small as one micron.
- 18. A diffractive authentication structure as in claim 16, wherein said micro-graphical feature has discernable feature components of substantially 6 micron.
- 19. A diffractive authentication structure as in claim 16, wherein said diffractive fringe structures have spacings as small as one micron.
- 20. An authentication structure comprising:a layer of material; a diffractive structure formed within said layer of material; and a non-diffractive micro-graphical feature providing security information embedded within said diffractive structure formed within said layer of material; said diffractive structure and said non-diffractive micro-graphical feature being integrally formed within disjoint non-overlapping regions of said layer of material, said micro-graphical feature comprising a plurality of non-diffractive graphical structures including at least one alpha-numerical or symbolic character embedded in a surround of said diffractive structure, said non-diffractive micro-graphical feature not overlying or underlying said diffractive structure; said diffractive structure generating an optical characteristic which is dependent upon either or both of a direction of irradiation of said diffractive structure and a direction of sensing a transmission or reflection of said irradiation through or from said diffractive structure; and said non-diffractive micro-graphical feature having a substantially constant optical characteristic substantially independent of either or both of said direction of said irradiation and said direction of sensing said transmission or reflection of said irradiation through or from said non-diffractive structure.
- 21. The structure in claim 20, wherein said non-diffractive micro-graphical feature being integrally formed within said layer of material is integrally formed without alteration of said diffractive structure.
- 22. The structure in claim 20, wherein said micro-graphical features comprises alpha-numerical characters.
- 23. The structure in claim 20, wherein said substrate comprises a paper substrate.
- 24. The structure in claim 20, further comprising a document substrate onto which said authentication structure is formed or attached.
- 25. The structure in claim 24, wherein said document substrate is selected from the group consisting of currency, a official document, a legal instrument, a financial instrument, a commercial instrument, a credit card, and article packaging.
- 26. The structure in claim 24, wherein said micro-graphical feature comprises alpha-numeric text devoid of any diffraction fringes and having discernable feature components as small as six microns, and said diffractive fringe structures having spacings as small as one micron.
- 27. A document as in claim 20, wherein said micro-graphical feature has discernable feature components of substantially 6 micron.
- 28. A document as in claim 20, wherein said each said non-diffractive micro-graphical feature being formed by the absence of said diffractive element.
- 29. An authentication structure comprising:a layer of material; a diffractive structure formed within said layer of material; and a non-diffractive micro-graphical feature providing security information embedded within said diffractive structure formed within said layer of material; each of said diffractive structure and said non-diffractive micro-graphical feature being integrally formed within said layer of material, said micro-graphical feature comprising a plurality of non-diffractive graphical structures including at least one alpha-numerical character embedded in a surround of said diffractive structure; said diffractive structure generating an optical characteristic which is dependent upon either or both of a direction of irradiation of said diffractive structure and a direction of sensing a transmission or reflection of said irradiation through or from said diffractive structure; said non-diffractive micro-graphical feature having a substantially constant optical characteristic substantially independent of either or both of said direction of said irradiation and said direction of sensing said transmission or reflection of said irradiation through or from said non-diffractive structure; and said non-diffractive micro-graphical feature being integrally formed within said layer of material is integrally formed without overlying or underlying a portion of said diffractive structure.
- 30. The structure in claim 29, wherein said micro-graphical features comprises alpha-numerical characters.
- 31. The structure in claim 29, wherein said substrate comprises a paper substrate.
- 32. The structure in claim 29, further comprising a document substrate onto which said authentication structure is formed or attached.
- 33. The structure in claim 32, wherein said document substrate is selected from the group consisting of currency, a official document, a legal instrument, a financial instrument, a commercial instrument, a credit card, and article packaging.
- 34. The structure in claim 32, wherein said micro-graphical feature comprises alpha-numeric text devoid of any diffraction fringes and having discernable feature components as small as six microns, and said diffractive fringe structures having spacings as small as one micron.
- 35. A structure as in claim 29, wherein said micro-graphical feature has discernable feature components of substantially 6 micron.
- 36. A structure as in claim 29, wherein said each said non-diffractive micro-graphical feature being formed by the absence of said diffractive element.
- 37. An authentication structure comprising:a layer of material; a diffractive structure formed within said layer of material; and a non-diffractive micro-graphical feature providing security information embedded within said diffractive structure formed within said layer of material; each of said diffractive structure and said non-diffractive micro-graphical feature being integrally formed within said layer of material said micro-graphical feature comprising a plurality of non-diffractive graphical structures including at least one alpha-numerical character embedded in a surround of said diffractive structure; said diffractive structure generating an optical characteristic which is dependent upon either or both of a direction of irradiation of said diffractive structure and a direction of sensing a transmission or reflection of said irradiation through or from said diffractive structure; and said non-diffractive micro-graphical feature having a substantially constant optical characteristic substantially independent of either or both of said direction of said irradiation and said direction of sensing said transmission or reflection of said irradiation through or from said non-diffractive structure; and said diffractive structure and said non-diffractive micro-graphical feature are formed in disjoint non-overlapping regions of said layer of material.
- 38. The structure in claim 37, wherein said micro-graphical features comprises alpha-numerical characters.
- 39. The structure in claims 37, wherein said substrate comprises a paper substrate.
- 40. The structure in claim 37, further comprising a document substrate onto which said authentication structure is formed or attached.
- 41. The structure in claim 40, wherein said document substrate is selected from the group consisting of currency, a official document, a legal instrument, a financial instrument, a commercial instrument, a credit card, and article packaging.
- 42. The structure in claim 40, wherein said micro-graphical feature comprises alpha-numeric text devoid of any diffraction fringes and having discernable feature components as small as six microns, and said diffractive fringe structures having spacings as small as one micron.
- 43. A structure as in claim 37, wherein said micro-graphical feature has discernable feature components of substantially 6 micron.
- 44. A structure as in claim 37, wherein said each said non-diffractive micro-graphical feature being formed by the absence of said diffractive element.
