Claims
- 1. An anchor sheet for forming a cushioning support below a decorative covering comprising a laminate having an upper layer of a relatively thin flexible rigid sheet material having on its upper layer a plurality of hooks comprising one half of a hook and loop attachment system and a bottom layer of a relatively resilient cushioning material attached to the upper layer, the laminate having sufficient rigidity, thickness and mass that when combined with an overlying decorative covering attached to the upper layer by means of loops comprising the complementary second half of a hook and loop attachment system, that such combination is stable against buckling and atmospheric forces so as not to require substantial attachment to the underlying substrate for stability, in which the upper layer is comprised of a first hookless layer and a second hooked film layer placed on the hookless layer so as to leave an area along at least two opposed edges of the upper layer free of hooks for seam-joining by pressure sensitive adhesion tape with an abutting anchor sheet.
- 2. The anchor sheet of claim 1 in which the sheet is a rectangle and the hookless area is along all four edges of the rectangle.
- 3. The anchor sheet of claim 2 in which the hookless area is recessed on the upper layer approximately the thickness of the hooked film layer.
- 4. An anchor sheet module for transportation to a surface to be covered and for attachment to additional modules to form an anchor sheet subfloor covered in hooks for installation of overlaying decorative covering pieces having a complementary loop backing comprising:an upper layer covered with a plurality of hooks, a lower layer attached to the upper layer, the lower layer dimensioned so that, after attachment of the upper layer to the lower layer, there is provided an overlap area of lower layer along two adjacent edges of the lower layer for detachable attachment of an overlapping portion of the upper layer of an adjoining module or of an additional piece overlapping the join between the module and an adjoining module.
- 5. An anchor sheet module as claimed in claim 4 in which the upper layer and the lower layer of each module are permanently attached.
- 6. An anchor sheet module as claimed in claim 4 in which the upper and lower layer of each module are detachably attached.
- 7. An anchor sheet module as claimed in claim 6 in which the upper and lower layer of each are detachably attached by means of a complementary hook and loop attachment system.
- 8. An anchor sheet module as claimed in claim 4 in which overlap area of lower layer of anchor sheet module and overlap area of upper layer of anchor sheet module are provided with means for detachable attachment of such anchor sheet module to an adjoining anchor sheet module by attachment to an overlap area of an adjoining anchor sheet module by means of a complementary hook and loop attachment system.
- 9. An anchor sheet module as claimed in claim 4 in which the underside of the lower layer of the anchor sheet module is covered with a resilient cushion layer.
- 10. An anchor sheet module as claimed in claim 4 wherein the upper layer is rectangular and the lower layer is rectangular.
- 11. The method of installing a covering comprising:(a) selecting an anchor sheet piece comprising a thin rigid flexible sheet covered on one side with hooks (b) abutting the anchor sheet piece to a second anchor sheet piece (c) joining the pieces at the seams with an overlying seam join, or tape (d) after either step (a) (b) or (c) trimming the anchor sheet piece or pieces to fit in the space to be covered (e) installing a covering having complementary loops on its underside in detachable attachment to the anchor sheet hooks, in which at least the portion of hooks at the point of installation of the covering are temporarily covered by a removable slip cover, the removable slip covering being a smooth, thin, hard rigid sheet to which hooks or loops cannot attach, the sheet being shaped to conform to an edge of a decorative piece.
- 12. The method of installing a covering comprising:(a) selecting an anchor sheet piece comprising a thin rigid flexible sheet covered on one side with hooks (b) abutting the anchor sheet piece to a second anchor sheet piece (c) joining the pieces at the seams with an overlying seam join, or tape (d) after either step (a) (b) or (c) trimming the anchor sheet piece or pieces to fit in the space to be covered (e) laying a removable template onto the anchor sheet and inserting decorative pieces in or abutting the template to create a pattern on the surface of the anchor sheet, the decorative pieces having complementary loops on its underside in detachable attachment to the anchor sheet hooks.
- 13. An anchor sheet for attachment to a floor to form a subfloor for a decorative covering comprising an upper layer of a relatively thin flexible rigid sheet material and a lower layer of a relatively resilient cushioning material, in which the anchor sheet can be cut and fit within the boundaries of a room and has sufficient rigidity and mass to remain without distortion or buckling within the room by free floating on the existing floor without substantial attachment to the floor.
- 14. An anchor sheet for forming a cushioning support below a decorative covering comprising a laminate having an upper layer of a relatively thin flexible rigid sheet material having on its upper layer a plurality of hooks comprising one half of a hook and loop attachment system and a bottom layer of a relatively resilient cushioning material attached to the upper layer, the laminate having sufficient rigidity, thickness and mass that when combined with an overlying decorative covering attached to the upper layer by means of loops comprising the complementary second half of a hook and loop attachment system, that such combination is stable against buckling and atmospheric forces so as not to require substantial attachment to the underlying substrate for stability.
- 15. A rectangular anchor sheet module for installation to form an anchor sheet subfloor covered in hooks for installation of overlaying decorative covering pieces having a complementary loop backing comprising:a relatively rigid polymer upper layer having an upper portion covered with a plurality of hooks and having a lower portion of substantially the same length and width as the upper portion but offset from the upper portion so as to create areas of overlap and underlap and a bottom layer of a relatively resilient cushioning material attached to the lower portion of the upper layer.
- 16. The anchor sheet module of claim 15 in which the upper portion of the upper layer and the lower portion of the upper layer are of substantially the same thickness.
- 17. The anchor she module of claim 16 in which the upper portion of the upper layer and the lower portion of the upper layer are offset to create areas of overlap and underlap on opposite sides of the sheet.
- 18. An anchor sheet module as claimed in claim 17 which the upper portion of the upper layer of the anchor sheet module overlaps the lower portion of the upper layer of an adjoining anchor sheet module to form an anchor sheet subfloor.
