STATEMENT REGARDING FEDERALLY SPONSORED RESEARCH OR DEVELOPMENT
None
Genus and species: Humulus lupulus.
Variety denomination: ‘HBC 637’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
‘HBC 637’ is a product of a controlled breeding program carried out by the inventors in the Yakima Valley of Washington State. ‘HBC 637’ was one of several seedlings resulting from a controlled cross made in 2008 with female parent ‘HBC 366’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 25,899) and male parent ‘21-10-21’ (unpatented). Seedlings from this cross were planted in 2009, and screened for disease and sex in a greenhouse and field nursery near Toppenish, Wash. A single plant of ‘HBC 637’ was selected in 2011, and in 2012 was expanded to two, seven-hill plots, which were planted in the area of Toppenish, Wash. The plants were observed and evaluated for several years, and in 2018 a one acre test plot of ‘HBC 637’ was established in the area of Toppenish, Wash. Throughout several generations of asexual propagation, ‘HBC 637’ has been observed to retain its distinctive characteristics and remain true to type.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS
FIG. 1 illustrates a mature ‘HBC 637’ hop plant as grown on a trellis;
FIG. 2 illustrates a close up of whole cones and leaves of a ‘HBC 637’ hop plant as grown on the trellis; and
FIG. 3 illustrates a multiple of trellis with mature ‘HBC 637’ hop plants.
The colors of these illustrations may vary with lighting conditions and, therefore, color characteristics of this new variety should be determined with reference to the observations described herein, rather than from these illustrations alone.
DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
The following description is based on observations made during the 2014-2018 growing seasons at Toppenish, Wash. It should be understood that the characteristics described will vary somewhat depending upon cultural practices and climatic conditions, and can vary with location and season. Quantified measurements are expressed as an average of measurements taken from a number of individual plants of the new variety. The measurements of any individual plant or any group of plants, of the new variety may vary from the stated average. Color code designations are by reference to The R.H.S. Colour Chart, 4th ed., Copyright 2001, published by The Royal Horticultural Society of Great Britain.
