Claims
- 1. A hot melt adhesive composition, which comprises:
- a base polymer constituent having a melt index of 0.2 to 3000 g/10 min as measured by ASTM D- 1238,
- a tackifying constituent,
- optionally a wax constituent, and
- a low molecular weight constituent having a melt index of greater than 3000 g/10 min as measured by ASTM D-1238, said low molecular weight constituent being selected from the group consisting of:
- (a) random ethylene/carbon monoxide copolymers,
- (b) random ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymers consisting of less than about 10 mol% vinyl alcohol, and
- (c) random ethylene/vinyl alcohol/vinyl acetate terpolymers consisting of less than about 10 mol% vinyl alcohol;
- (d) random polymers of (a), (b), and (c) with additional recurring monomeric units derived from monomers selected from the group consisting of alkyl acrylates, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, maleic anhydride, and vinyl acetate, and
- (e) at least partially oxidized said (a), (b), (c), and (d),
- wherein said low molecular weight constituent is present in an amount sufficient to provide greater T-Peel adhesion to a substrate, measured according to ASTM D-1876, than a comparative composition in which said low molecular weight constituent is not present.
- 2. The hot melt adhesive composition according to claim 1, wherein the low molecular weight constituent is an ethylene/carbon monoxide copolymer which consists of 0.01-99.99 wt.% ethylene and 0.01-99.99 wt.% carbon monoxide.
- 3. The hot melt adhesive composition according to claim 2, wherein the low molecular weight constituent is an ethylene/carbon monoxide copolymer which consists of 50-99.99 wt,% ethylene and 0.01-50 wt.% carbon monoxide.
- 4. The hot melt adhesive composition according to claim 1, further comprising a wax.
- 5. The hot melt adhesive composition according to claim 4, wherein said wax is selected from the group consisting of paraffin waxes, microcrystalline waxes, low molecular weight polyethylene waxes and Fischer-Tropsch waxes.
- 6. The hot melt adhesive composition according to claim 1, wherein said low molecular weight constituent is at least partially oxidized.
- 7. The hot melt adhesive composition according to claim 1, wherein said ethylene/vinyl acetate/vinyl alcohol terpolymer is at least 25% saponified.
- 8. A hot melt adhesive composition, consisting essentially of:
- (a) 1-98 wt.% of a base polymer having a melt index of 0.2 to 3000 g/10 min, measured by ASTM D- 1238,
- (b) 1-98 wt.% of a tackifier,
- (c) optionally a wax constituent, and
- (d) a low molecular weight constituent having a melt index of greater than 3000 g/10 min as measured by ASTM D-1238, said low molecular weight constituent being selected from the group consisting of:
- (i) random ethylene/carbon monoxide copolymers,
- (ii) random ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymers, and
- (iii) random ethylene/vinyl alcohol/vinyl acetate terpolymers,
- (iv) random polymers of (i), (ii), and (iii) with recurring monomeric units derived from monomers selected from the group consisting of alkyl acrylates, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, maleic anhydride, and vinyl acetate, and
- (v) at least partially oxidized said (i), (ii), (iii), and (iv),
- wherein said low molecular weight constituent is present in an amount sufficient to provide greater T-Peel adhesion to a substrate, measured according to ASTM D-1876, than a comparative composition in which said low molecular weight constituent is not present.
- 9. A hot melt adhesive composition according to claim 8, wherein said low molecular weight constituent further comprises a wax.
- 10. A hot melt adhesive composition, consisting essentially of:
- (a) about 35% by weight of an ethylene/n-butyl acrylate/carbon monoxide terpolymer having a melt index of about 100 g/10 min as measured by ASTM D-1238;
- (b) about 40% by weight of a tackifying constituent;
- (c) about 0-20% by weight of a wax constituent; and
- (d) about 5-25% by weight of a low molecular weight ethylene/carbon monoxide copolymer constituent with a Brookfield viscosity of about 165-385 centipoises, measured at 140.degree. C., wherein said composition has an initial T-Peel adhesion to an aluminum foil substrate, measured according to ASTM D-1876, of at least 3 lb/in, and a T-Peel adhesion of at least 3 lb/in following ageing of said substrate for 7 days at 56.5.degree. C.
- 11. A hot melt adhesive as claimed in claim 10, consisting essentially of:
- (a) about 35% by weight of said ethylene/n-butyl acrylate/carbon monoxide terpolymer;
- (b) about 40% by weight of a tackifying constituent; and
- (c) about 25% by weight of an oxidized low molecular weight ethylene/carbon monoxide copolymer constituent with a Brookfield viscosity of about 217 centipoises, measured at 140.degree. C., wherein said composition has an initial T-Peel adhesion to an aluminum foil substrate, measured according to ASTM D-1876, of at least 3.5 lb/in, and a T-Peel adhesion of at least 4.4 lb/in following ageing of said substrate for 7 days at 56.5.degree. C.
- 12. A hot melt composition according to claim 10, consisting essentially of:
- (a) about 35% by weight of said ethylene/n-butyl acrylate/carbon monoxide terpolymer;
- (b) about 40% by weight of said tackifying constituent; and
- (c) about 25% by weight of a low molecular weight ethylene/carbon monoxide copolymer constituent with a Brookfield viscosity, measured at 140.degree. C., of about 230-245 centipoises, and a carbon monoxide content of about 13.7-30% by weight, wherein said composition has an initial T-Peel adhesion to an aluminum foil substrate, measured according to ASTM D-1876, of at least 4.1 lb/in, and a T-Peel adhesion of at least 5 lb/in following ageing of said substrate for 7 days at 56.5.degree. C.
- 13. A hot melt composition according to claim 12, wherein said composition has an initial T-Peel adhesion to an aluminum foil substrate, measured according to ASTM D-1876, of at least 4.7 lb/in, and a T-Peel adhesion of at least 5 lb/in following aging of said substrate for 7 days at 56.5.degree. C.
- 14. A hot melt composition, consisting essentially of:
- (a) about 35% by weight of ethylene/n-butyl acrylate/carbon monoxide terpolymer having a melt index of about 100 g/10 min as measured by ASTM D-1238;
- (b) about 40% by weight of a tackifying constituent; and
- (c) about 25% by weight of a low molecular weight ethylene/carbon monoxide copolymer constituent with a Brookfield viscosity, measured at 140.degree. C., of about 230 centipoises, and a carbon monoxide content of about 13.7% by weight, wherein said composition has an initial T-Peel adhesion to a polyvinyl chloride substrate, measured according to ASTM D- 1876, of about least 6.3 lb/in, and a T-Peel adhesion of at least 0.32 lb/in following aging of said substrate for 7 days at 56.5.degree. C.
- 15. A hot melt adhesive composition, consisting essentially of:
- (a) about 43% by weight of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer with a melt index of about 365-440 g/10 min, as measured by ASTM D-1238, and a vinyl acetate content of about 27.2-28.8% by weight;
- (b) about 32% by weight of a tackifying constituent; and
- (c) about 25% by weight of a low molecular weight ethylene/carbon monoxide copolymer constituent with a Brookfield viscosity measured at 140.degree. C., of about 230-245 cent/poises, and a carbon monoxide content of about 13.7-30% by weight, wherein said composition has an initial T-Peel adhesion to an untreated polypropylene substrate, measured according to ASTM D-1876, of at least 3.8 lb/in, and a T-Peel adhesion of at least 4.1 lb/in following aging of said substrate for 7 days at 56.5.degree. C.
- 16. A hot melt adhesive composition according to claim 15, consisting essentially of:
- (a) about 43% by weight of said ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer;
- (b) about 32% by weight of said tackifying constituent;
- (c) about 0-20% by weight of a wax constituent; and
- (d) about 5-25% by weight of a low molecular weight ethylene/carbon monoxide copolymer constituent with a Brookfield viscosity, measured at 140.degree. C., of about 230 centipoises, wherein said composition has an initial T-Peel adhesion to an untreated polypropylene substrate, measured according to ASTM D-1876, of at least 4.7 lb/in, and a T-Peel adhesion of at least 4.4 lb/in following aging of said substrate for 7 days at 56.5.degree. C.
- 17. A hot melt adhesive composition consisting essentially of:
- (a) about 43% by weight of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer with a melt index of about 365-440 g/10 min, as measured by ASTM D-1238, and a vinyl acetate content of about 27.2-28.8% by weight;
- (b) about 32% by weight of a tackifying constituent; and
- (c) about 25% by weight of a low molecular weight ethylene/carbon monoxide copolymer constituent with a Brookfield viscosity measured at 140.degree. C., of about 725 centipoises, and a carbon monoxide content of about 13.7-30% by weight,
- wherein said composition has an initial T-Peel adhesion to a polycarbonate substrate, measured according to ASTM D-1876, of at least 5.4 lb/in, and a T-Peel adhesion of at least 5.3 lb/in following aging of said substrate for 7 days at 56.5.degree. C.
- 18. A hot melt adhesive composition, consisting essentially of:
- (a) about 43% by weight of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer with a melt index of about 365-440 g/10 min, as measured by ASTM D-1238, and a vinyl acetate content of about 27.2-28.8% by weight;
- (b) about 32% by weight of a tackifying constituent: and
- (c) about 25% by weight of a low molecular weight ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymer constituent with a Brookfield viscosity measured at 140.degree. C., of about 725 centipoises, and a number average molecular weight, measured by vapor phase osmometry, of about 2400,
- wherein said composition has an initial T-Peel adhesion to a polyethylene terephthalate substrate, measured according to ASTM D-1876, of at least 5.0 lb/in, and a T-Peel adhesion of at least 4.6 lb/in following aging of said substrate for 7 days at 56.5.degree. C.
- 19. A hot melt adhesive composition, consisting essentially of:
- (a) about 38% by weight of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer with a melt index of about 38-48 g/10 min, as measured by ASTM D-1238, and a vinyl acetate content of about 27.2-28.8% by weight;
- (b) about 32% by weight of a tackifying constituent;
- (c) about 15-25% by weight of a wax constituent; and
- (d) about 25% by weight of a low molecular weight ethylene/carbon monoxide copolymer constituent with a Brookfield viscosity measured at 140.degree. C., of about 165-385 centipoises, and a carbon monoxide content of about 1.4-11% by weight, wherein said composition has an initial T-Peel adhesion to a polycarbonate substrate, measured according to ASTM D-1876, of at least 5.3 lb/in, and a T-Peel adhesion of at least 4.7 lb/in following aging of said substrate for 7 days at 56.5.degree. C.
- 20. The hot melt adhesive composition of claim 1 wherein said low molecular weight constituent has a Brookfield viscosity of about 165 to about 725 centipoises measured at 140.degree. C.
- 21. The hot melt adhesive composition of claim 8 wherein said low molecular weight constituent has a Brookfield viscosity of about 165 to about 725 centipoises measured at 140.degree. C.
- 22. The hot melt adhesive composition of claim 17 wherein said composition has an initial T-Peel adhesion to said polycarbonate substrate, measured according to ASTM D-1876, of at least 5.6 lb/in, and a T-Peel adhesion of at least 5.6 lb/in following aging of said substrate for 7 days at 56.5.degree. C.
- 23. The hot melt adhesive composition of claim 19 wherein said composition has an initial T-Peel adhesion to said polycarbonate substrate, measured according to ASTM D-1876, of at least 5.7 lb/in, and a T-Peel adhesion of at least 5.1 lb/in following aging of said substrate for 7 days at 56.5.degree. C.
- 24. The hot melt adhesive composition of claim 19 wherein said composition has an initial T-Peel adhesion to said polycarbonate substrate, measured according to ASTM D-1876, of at least 6 lb/in, and a T-Peel adhesion of at least 6 lb/in following aging of said substrate for 7 days at 56.5.degree. C.
- 25. The hot melt adhesive composition of claim 19 wherein said composition has an initial T-Peel adhesion to said polycarbonate substrate, measured according to ASTM D-1876, of at least 6.3 lb/in, and a T-Peel adhesion of at least 6.2 lb/in following aging of said substrate for 7 days at 56.5.degree. C.
- 26. A hot melt adhesive composition, consisting essentially of:
- (a) about 38% by weight of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer with a melt index of about 38-48 g/10min, as measured by ASTM D-1238, and a vinyl acetate content of about 27.2-28.8% by weight;
- (b) about 32% by weight of a tackifying constituent;
- (c) about 15-25% by weight of a wax constituent; and
- (d) about 25% by weight of a low molecular weight ethylene/carbon monoxide copolymer constituent with a Brookfield viscosity measured at 140.degree. C., of about 165-385 centipoises, and a carbon monoxide content of about 1.4-4.5% by weight, wherein said composition has an initial T-Peel adhesion to an aluminum foil substrate, measured according to ASTM D-1876, of at least 2.5 lb/in, and a T-Peel adhesion of at least 1.9 lb/in following aging of said substrate for 7 days at 56.5.degree. C.
- 27. The hot melt adhesive composition of claim 26 wherein said composition has an initial T-Peel adhesion to said aluminum foil substrate, measured according to ASTM D-1876, of at least 2.7 lb/in, and a T-Peel adhesion of at least 2.3 lb/in following aging of said substrate for 7 days at 56.5.degree. C.
- 28. The hot melt adhesive composition of claim 26 wherein said composition has an initial T-Peel adhesion to said aluminum foil substrate, measured according to ASTM D-1876, of at least 3.0 lb/in, and a T-Peel adhesion of at least 2.3 lb/in following aging of said substrate for 7 days at 56.5.degree. C.
- 29. A hot melt adhesive composition, consisting essentially of:
- (a) about 43% by weight of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer with a melt index of about 365-440 g/10 min, as measured by ASTM D-1238, and a vinyl acetate content of about 27.2-28.8% by weight;
- (b) about 32% by weight of a tackifying constituent; and
- (c) about 25% by weight of a low molecular weight ethylene/carbon monoxide copolymer constituent with a Brookfield viscosity measured at 140.degree. C., of about 230 centipoises, and a carbon monoxide content of about 13.7% by weight,
- wherein said composition has an initial T-Peel adhesion to a polyvinyl chloride substrate, measured according to ASTM D-1876, of at least 2.5 lb/in, and a T-Peel adhesion of at least 0.06 lb/in following aging of said substrate for 7 days at 56.5.degree. C.
- 30. A hot melt adhesive composition, consisting essentially of:
- (a) about 43% by weight of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer with a melt index of about 365-440 g/10 min, as measured by ASTM D-1238, and a vinyl acetate content of about 27.2-28.8% by weight;
- (b) about 32% by weight of a tackifying constituent; and
- (c) about 25% by weight of a low molecular weight ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymer constituent with a Brookfield viscosity measured at 140.degree. C., of about 725 centipoises, and a number average molecular weight, measured by vapor phase osmometry, of about 2400,
- wherein said composition has an initial T-Peel adhesion to a polyvinyl chloride substrate, measured according to ASTM D-1876, of at least 3.0 lb/in, and a T-Peel adhesion of at least 0.06 lb/in following aging of said substrate for 7 days at 56.5.degree. C.
