Claims
- 1. In a toaster, the combination comprising:
a frame comprising:
a one piece base frame including a base frame member having a front end a rear end, and a rear frame member perpendicular to said base frame member and joined at its lower end to the rear end of said base frame member; a front frame member parallel to said rear frame member and connected to said base frame member intermediate its ends; a toaster cover, said toaster cover, said base frame member and said front frame member forming a control chamber and said toaster cover, said base frame member, said front frame member and said rear frame member forming a toasting chamber which is open at its upper end; a toaster control assembly located in said control chamber, said toaster control assembly comprising:
a toaster control support member mounted at the front end of said base frame member; and a toaster control circuit mounted on said support member including an electromagnet and a pair of power switches which, when closed, enable energization of the electromagnet; a vertically-movable bread support carriage including at least one bread support member in said toasting chamber and a carriage member in said control chamber connected to said at least one bread support member, said bread support assembly being movable between a raised position and a lowered position for toasting; a vertically-movable bread carriage control member having power switch-engaging surfaces which, when the carriage control member is lowered to initiate operation of the toaster, close the power switches to energize toaster heating elements and the electromagnet; an armature mounted on said carriage control member for vertical movement therewith and held by said electromagnet when energized.
- 2. The toaster of claim 1 wherein said front frame member has a vertically-extending slot open to the bottom of said front frame member through which each of said at least one of said bread support members extends so that said front frame member may be assembled onto said base member after said bread support member is mounted on said base member.
- 3. The toaster of claim 1 wherein said bread support latch comprises an electromagnet supported on said includes an armature mounted on said vertical post located within said control chamber and slidably receiving said carriage member, a spring coiled around said vertical post between a downwardly-facing surface of said carriage and said control support assembly that upwardly biases said carriage member.
- 4. The toaster of claim 3 wherein said bread support latch assembly including an armature having a plate and an armature support housing that loosely supports said armature with said plate in a horizontal orientation.
- 5. In a toaster having a frame base plate and a crumb tray pivotally mounted on said base plate, the improvement wherein said base plate has a pair of mounting pins struck upwardly and outwardly from the material forming the base frame member and wherein said crumb tray has a pair of upwardly offset mounting ears having apertures received on said mounting pins.
- 6. A toaster comprising:
a frame including a base frame member, a front frame member and a rear frame member; a vertically-movable bread carriage having a pair of bread support arms extending from said front frame member through said rear frame member; means for moving said bread carriage downwardly to a toasting position and to initiate a toasting cycle; means for holding said bread carriage in its lowered position during a toasting cycle; heating elements energized during said toasting cycle adjacent said pair of bread support arms between said front frame member and said rear frame member; four grills, one on each side of said bread support arms separating said bread support arms from said heating elements; two of said grills being supported for pivotal movement by said base frame member, both of said two of said grills having a horizontal wire at their upper ends extending through openings in both of said front frame member and said rear frame member; a torsion spring behind said rear frame member having a center portion underneath said support arms that crosses over the support arms and having opposite ends connected to respective ones of said horizontal wires of said two of said grills, said torsion spring causing said horizontal wires to be moved toward one another when said bread support arms are lowered to lower food items to a toasting position.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein said two of said grills having a second horizontal wire at their lower ends, said front frame member having a pair of rearwardly extending plates generally axially aligned with respective ones of said second horizontal wires under which front ends of said second horizontal wires extend to prevent the front ends of said two grills from raising up as said first mentioned horizontal wires are moved toward one another when said bread support arms are lowered.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein said means for holding said bread carriage in its lowered position during a toasting cycle comprises an electromagnet fixed with respect to said base frame member and an armature moved downwardly with said bread carriage which is held by said electromagnet during a toasting cycle.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein said electromagnet is suspended from a support housing connected to said bread support arms.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein said electromagnet is mounted on a printed circuit board mounted on and extending transverse to said base frame member and said electromagnet extends rearwardly from the rear face of said printed circuit board, and wherein said support housing has cam surfaces engaging the front face of said printed circuit board when said armature is lowered toward said electromagnet.
- 11. A method of manufacturing a toaster comprising the steps of forming a base frame member and a rear frame member in one piece, mounting a plastic toaster control support member on the base frame member, mounting a bread carriage on said support assembly, said bread carriage having a pair of bread support arms, and thereafter mounting a front frame member having a pair of slots open to the bottom edge of said front frame member by aligning said slots with said support arms and moving said front frame member into engagement with said base frame member.
