Claims
- 1. A housing for a process controller means in a system including a sensor assembly having at least one sensing means for providing an output signal indicative of a parameter of the process, the process controller means receiving and processing the output signal and generating control outputs for maintaining a desired operation of the process, said housing comprising: a body portion including a generally box-like member having top and bottom walls, a side wall, first and second end walls, and an open side, cover means pivotally mounted on said member adjacent said open side and movable between an open position and a closed position, said cover means in its closed position overlying said open side to close said body portion, said body portion defining means for mounting said process controller means within said member and means for mounting connection means within said member, said connection means constructed and arranged for connecting said process controller means to said sensor assembly, said member defining flange means extending along the periphery of its open side, and when said cover means is in its closed position, said cover means having a first portion extending in overlying relation with said flange means defining a first gap, and a second portion in overlying relation with portions of said top, bottom and side walls defining a second gap which extends perpendicular to said first gap, the ratio of the length of the overlapping portions of said member and said cover means to the width of one of said gaps therebetween being in the range of about 15:1 to 20:1 and the ratio of the length of the overlapping portions of said member and said cover means to the width of the other of said gaps being in the range of about 5:1 to about 10:1, thereby defining a closed housing which substantially attenuates electromagnetic radio frequency interference thereby isolating said process controller means therefrom whenever said cover means is in its closed position.
- 2. A housing for a process controller means for use in a system including a sensor assembly having at least one sensing means for providing an output signal indicative of a parameter of the process, the process controller means receiving and processing the output signal and generating control outputs for maintaining a desired operation of the process, said housing comprising: a body portion including a generally box-like enclosure member having top and bottom walls, a side wall, first and second end walls and an open side, a door pivotally mounted on said enclosure member and movable between an open position and a closed position to enclose said body portion, said member defining means for mounting said process controller means therewithin, said member defining at its open side a first flange extending inwardly along the periphery thereof and extending in overlying relation with peripheral surface portions of said door defining a first gap therebetween when said door is in its closed position; and said door defining a second flange extending in overlying relation with a peripheral surface portion of said walls of said member defining a second gap when said door is in its closed position, said first and second gaps extending perpendicular to each other, the ratios of the length of the overlying portions of said first and second flanges of said respective portions of said enclosure member and said door to the widths of said first and second gaps respectively therebetween being selected to define a substantially closed housing which substantially attenuates electromagnetic interference and radio frequency interference whereby the process controller means enclosed within said housing is isolated from electromagnetic interference and radio frequency interference whenever said door is in its closed position.
- 3. A housing according to claim 2, which further comprises partition means dividing said enclosure member into first and second compartments, said process controller means being mounted within said first compartment of said enclosure member and including termination means mounted within said second compartment of said enclosure member, said first mentioned door closing said first compartment of said enclosure member, and a second door pivotally mounted on said enclosure member for closing said second compartment of said enclosure member.
- 4. A housing according to claim 3, wherein said housing means further comprises sealing rail means extending along said enclosure member adjacent to said partition means, said first door closing said first compartment of said enclosure member and having a portion of its flange cooperating with said sealing rail to define a gap portion therebetween and said second door closing said second compartment of said enclosure member and having a flange portion cooperating with said sealing rail to define a further gap therebetween.
- 5. A housing according to claim 2, further comprising user interface means including a membrane keyboard means mounted on said door, said door having at least one aperture therethrough for facilitating electrical connection between said keyboard and said process controller means, said membrane keyboard means including shielding means of an electrically conductive material overlying said aperture to substantially prevent entry of electromagnetic and radio frequency energy into the housing through said aperture.
- 6. A housing according to claim 5, wherein said user interface means further comprises an alphanumeric display means mounted within said enclosure member and aligned with said aperture rearwardly of said keyboard means, and said keyboard means defining a window of a material impervious to electromagnetic and radio frequency energy while exposing the display to view through the door mounted on said open side of said enclosure member.
- 7. A housing according to claim 2, further comprising: a cold junction compensator means of the process controller means mounted in an external housing and subject to electromagnetic and radio frequency energy, capacitor means connected between a plurality of leads from said cold junction compensator means, and at least one shield bead connected to each of said plurality of leads from said cold junction compensator means.
