Claims
- 1. A human-portable apparatus for concentrating particles entrained in a gas stream, the apparatus comprising:a body including a plenum having three ports through which a gas can pass between the outside of the body and the plenum including a first port through which gas with entrained particles can pass, a second port having at least one pervious screen disposed across said port for collection of particles, and a third port through which the plenum is connectable to a separate chemical detector, a preconcentrator fan adapted to draw gases through the plenum and second port, and a connector adapted to permit joining the third port to a separate chemical detector.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a heater for controllably heating the at least one pervious screen.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the at least one pervious screen heats when electrical current is applied to it.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein said heater further comprises at least one power source electrically connected to the at least one pervious screen.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the fan is further adapted to provide reversible air flows.
- 6. The system of claim 1 further comprising a chemical detector connected to said third port.
- 7. The system of claim 6 wherein said body is generally cylindrical with the first and third ports at opposing ends of the body, and the second port extending through a wall of the body between the first and third ports.
- 8. A human-portable system for collecting and analyzing particles entrained in a gas stream, the system comprisinga body including a plenum, a first port through which gas with entrained particles can pass from a region outside of the body into the plenum, a second port and a third port, a preconcentrator fan adapted to draw gases through the plenum and second port, at least one pervious screen disposed across the second port, and a detector adapted to draw gases from the plenum through the third port and perform chemical analysis of those gases.
- 9. The system of claim 8 wherein the at least one pervious screen is adapted to be heatable.
- 10. The system of claim 9 wherein the at least one pervious screen heats when electrical current is applied to it.
- 11. The system of claim 10 further comprising at least one power source functionally connected to the at least one pervious screen.
- 12. The system of claim 11 wherein the fan is further adapted to provide reversible air flows.
- 13. The system of claim 6 wherein said body is generally cylindrical with the first and third ports at opposing ends of the body, and the second port extending through a wall of the body between the first and third ports.
- 14. The system of claim, 13 wherein the volume of the plenum is less than 3 in3.
- 15. The system of claim 13 further comprising a controllable heater for heating said pervious screen to release particles from said screen for detection by said detector.
- 16. The system of claim 13 wherein the volume of the plenum is less than 3 in3.
- 17. The system of claim 8 further comprising a valve for controlling the flow of gas through the third port.
