Claims
- 1. A hybrid structure comprising a first region and a second region,
a. said first region storing selectively retrievable data in a first track of successive quanta of said data, each said quantum of stored data represented, in said hybrid structure, by an elongated, microscopic three-dimensional principal feature, said principal feature having a first longitudinal dimension along said first track, a first transverse dimension normal to said first longitudinal dimension and co-planar therewith in a first plane, and a first vertical dimension normal to said first plane; and b. said second region comprising a second track, said second track having a second longitudinal dimension, a second transverse dimension normal to said second longitudinal dimension and co-planar therewith in a second plane, and a second vertical dimension normal to said second plane, said second transverse dimensions and said second vertical dimension each microscopic in extent; wherein c. the extent of said second transverse dimension exceeds that of said first transverse dimension; and the extent of said first vertical dimension exceeds that of said second vertical dimension.
- 2. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 1, wherein:
a. said hybrid structure comprises a disc having a central axis about which said disc may selectively be rotated, said disc having a substantially planar surface; b. said first region comprises a first annulus on a surface of said disc and said second region comprises a second annulus on said surface, said first and second annuli co-axial with said disc; c. said first track comprises a spiral around said disc in said first annulus, and said second track comprises a spiral around said disc in said second annulus; d. said first plane and said second plane are in said surface; and e. said second track is a groove in said surface.
- 3. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 2, wherein said principal features comprise pits in said surface, each successive pair of principal pits interspersed with a principal land, each said principal pit and each said principal land representing a quantum of said stored data.
- 4. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 3, wherein each of said principal lands comprises a three-dimensional indentation into said surface, having a third transverse dimension.
- 5. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 4, wherein the extent of said third transverse dimension substantially equals that of said first transverse dimension.
- 6. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 4, wherein the extent of said third transverse dimension exceeds that of said first transverse dimension.
- 7. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 6, wherein
a. said three-dimensional indentation is substantially continuous along at least a portion of said first track; and b. a plurality of said pits are contained within said three-dimensional indentation in said portion of said first track.
- 8. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 4, wherein the longitudinal extremities of each of said pits are mutually geometrically symmetric.
- 9. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 5, wherein the longitudinal extremities of each of said lands are mutually geometrically symmetric.
- 10. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 1, wherein said features and said second track are imposed in said structure by a thermal process
- 11. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 4, wherein each of said principal pits has an outer shape, defined by a transverse section thereof, displaying no substantial slope discontinuity from the point at which said pit begins its displacement in said first vertical direction from said surface, at one transverse edge of said first feature, until the point at which said displacement from said surface ends at the opposite transverse edge of said principal pit.
- 12. A parent hybrid disc structure comprising a first region and a second region,
a. said first region storing selectively retrievable data in a first track of successive quanta of said data, each said quantum of stored data represented, in said hybrid structure, by an elongated, microscopic three-dimensional principal feature in said first track, said principal feature having a first longitudinal dimension along said first track, a first transverse dimension normal to said first longitudinal dimension and co-planar with said first longitudinal dimension in a first plane, and a first vertical dimension normal to said first plane; b. said second region comprising a second track, said second track having a second longitudinal dimension, a second transverse dimension normal to said second longitudinal dimension and co-planar with said second longitudinal dimension in a second plane, and a second vertical dimension normal to said second plane, said second transverse dimensions and said second vertical dimension each microscopic in extent; and c. the extent of said second transverse dimension greater than that of said first transverse dimension; and d. the extent of said first vertical dimension greater than that of said second vertical direction: wherein, e. said parent structure is configured so that a final hybrid structure may be produced therefrom, said final hybrid structure containing
(1) secondary features respectively representing the quanta of data represented by the corresponding principal features, said data being selectively retrievable from said final hybrid structure; and (2) a guide track into which tertiary features representing quanta of further data may selectively be recorded and from which said further data may be selectively retrieved.
- 13. A final hybrid structure replicated from the parent hybrid disc as recited in claim 12.
- 14. An intermediary hybrid structure replicated from the parent structure recited in claim 12, from which the final structure recited in claim 13 may be replicated.
- 15. A method of producing a hybrid structure comprising a first region and a second region, said first region storing selectively retrievable data in a first track of successive quanta of said data, each said quantum of stored data represented, in said hybrid structure, by an elongated, microscopic three-dimensional principal feature, said principal feature having a first longitudinal dimension along said first track, a first transverse dimension normal to said first longitudinal dimension and co-planar therewith in a first plane, and a first vertical dimension normal to said first plane, said second region comprising a second track, said second track having a second longitudinal dimension, a second transverse dimension normal to said second longitudinal dimension and co-planar therewith in a second plane, and a second vertical dimension normal to said second plane, said transverse and vertical dimensions each microscopic in extent, the extent of said second transverse dimension greater than that of said first transverse dimension, and the extent of said first vertical dimension greater than that of said second vertical dimension, said method comprising the steps of:
a. providing a structure into which said principal features and said second track may be imposed; b. providing first and second optical means; c. causing said principal features to be imposed in said hybrid structure by said first optical means; and d. causing said second track to be imposed in said hybrid structure by said second optical means.
- 16. The method as recited in claim 15, wherein said first optical means comprises a first beam and said second optical means comprises a second beam.
- 17. The method as recited in claim 15, wherein a single optical beam is provided, said second optical means comprising means to cause said beam to selectively dither along said transverse direction.
- 18. The method as recited in claim 15, wherein said provided structure comprises a surface whereon said principal features and said second track may be imposed by optically-induced thermal means, said first and second optical means selectively inducing, thermally, said principal features and second track on said surface.
- 19. An apparatus for producing a hybrid structure comprising a first region and a second region, said first region storing selectively retrievable data in a first track of successive quanta of said data, each said quantum of stored data represented, in said hybrid structure, by an elongated, microscopic three-dimensional principal feature, said principal feature having a first longitudinal dimension along said first track, a first transverse dimension normal to said first longitudinal dimension and co-planar therewith in a first plane, and a first vertical dimension normal to said first plane, said second region comprising a second track, said second track having a second longitudinal dimension, a second transverse dimension normal to said second longitudinal dimension and co-planar therewith in a second plane, and a second vertical dimension normal to said second plane, said transverse and vertical dimension each microscopic in extent, the extent of said second transverse dimension greater than that of said first transverse dimension, and the extent of said first vertical dimension greater than that of said second vertical dimension, said apparatus comprising:
a. a structure into which said principal features and said second track may be imposed; b. first and second optical means; c. means to cause said principal features to be imposed in said hybrid structure by said first optical means; and d. means to cause said second track to be imposed in said hybrid structure by said second optical means.
- 20. The apparatus as recited in claim 19, wherein said structure comprises a surface whereon said principal features and said second track may be imposed by optically-induced thermal means, and said first and second optical means are configured to induce, thermally, said principal features and second track on said surface.
