Claims
- 1. A hybrid structure comprising:
a. a first region storing selectively retrievable data,
(1) a quantum of said data represented, in said first region, by a first data feature, each said first data feature comprising a three-dimensional first principal feature, said first principal feature having a longitudinal first feature dimension, a microscopic transverse first feature dimension normal to said longitudinal first feature dimension and co-planar therewith in a first feature plane and a microscopic vertical first feature dimension normal to said first feature plane, said plurality of first data features stored, in said first region, longitudinally along a portion of a first track in said hybrid structure; (2) said portion of said first track, having a longitudinal first track dimension, a microscopic transverse first track dimension normal to said longitudinal first track dimension and co-planar therewith in a first track plane and a microscopic vertical first track dimension normal to said first track plane; said first region further comprising:
(3) an effective land level vertically displaced in a first direction from said first track plane and from said first data feature,
(a) the extent of said vertical first feature dimension, measured from said effective land level, exceeds 350 nanometers, and (b) the extent of said vertical first track dimension, measured from said effective land level, is less than 170 nanometers; and b. a second region comprising a second track, a portion of said second track having a longitudinal second track dimension, a microscopic transverse second track dimension normal to said longitudinal second track dimension and co-planar therewith in a second track plane, and a microscopic vertical second track dimension normal to said second track plane.
- 2. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 1, wherein the transverse extent of said first feature does not exceed the transverse extent of said first track.
- 3. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 1, wherein the width of said first feature, measured at half depth is not more than approximately 110% of the width of said first track measured at half depth.
- 4. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 1, wherein the transverse extent of said first track is substantially identical to the transverse extent of said second track.
- 5. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 4, wherein said first track and said second track comprises one substantially continuous track.
- 6. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 1, wherein:
a. said hybrid structure comprises a disc having a central axis about which said disc may selectively be rotated, said disc having a substantially planar surface; b. said first region comprises a first annulus on a surface of said disc and said second region comprises a second annulus on said surface, said first and second annuli co-axial with said disc; c. said first track encircles said disc in said first annulus, and said second track encircles said disc in said second annulus; d. said first feature plane and said first track plane are in said surface; and e. said second track comprises a groove in said surface.
- 7. The hybrid disc structure as recited in claim 6, wherein said first and second tracks encircle said disc spirally.
- 8. The hybrid disc structure as recited in claim 7, wherein at least a portion of said first track and at least a portion of said second track together comprise a substantially continuous spiral.
- 9. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 6, comprising a successive plurality of said first principal features, each said first principal feature comprising a principal pit in said surface, each successive pair of principal pits interspersed with a principal land, each said principal pit and each said principal land separately representing a respective quantum of said stored data.
- 10. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 9, wherein each of said principal lands comprises a three-dimensional indentation into said surface, having a microscopic principal land transverse dimension and a microscopic principal land vertical dimension.
- 11. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 10, wherein the transverse extent of each of a successive plurality of said principal lands substantially equals the transverse extent of the respective pair of principal pits between which such principal land intervenes.
- 12. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 10, wherein the transverse extent of each of a successive plurality of said principal lands exceeds the transverse extent of the respective pair of principal pits between which such principal land intervenes.
- 13. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 9, wherein
a. at least a portion of said first track comprises a substantially continuous three-dimensional indentation in said surface; and b. said successive plurality of principal pits are contained within said three-dimensional indentation in said portion of said first track.
- 14. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 9, wherein the longitudinal extremities of each of said principal pits are mutually geometrically symmetric.
- 15. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 9, wherein the longitudinal extremities of each of said principal lands are mutually geometrically symmetric.
- 16. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 9, wherein each of said principal pits has an outer shape, defined by a transverse section thereof, displaying no substantial slope discontinuity from the point at which said principal pit begins its displacement in said first vertical direction from said surface, at one transverse edge of said first feature, until the point at which said displacement from said surface ends at the opposite transverse edge of said principal pit.
- 17. A hybrid structure comprising:
a. a first region storing selectively retrievable data,
(1) a quantum of said data represented, in said first region, by a first data feature, each said first data feature comprising a three-dimensional first principal feature, said first principal feature having a longitudinal first feature dimension, a microscopic transverse first feature dimension normal to said longitudinal first feature dimension and co-planar therewith in a first feature plane and a microscopic vertical first feature dimension normal to said first feature plane, said plurality of first data features stored, in said first region, longitudinally along a portion of a first track in said hybrid structure; (2) said portion of said first track, having a longitudinal first track dimension, a microscopic transverse first track dimension normal to said longitudinal first track dimension and co-planar therewith in a first track plane and a microscopic vertical first track dimension normal to said first track plane; said first region further comprising:
(3) an effective land level vertically displaced in a first direction from said first track plane and from said first data feature,
(a) the extent of said vertical first feature dimension, measured from said effective land level, is less than 250 nanometers, and (b) the extent of said vertical first track dimension, measured from said effective land level, is less than 170 nanometers; and b. a second region comprising a second track, a portion of said second track having a longitudinal second track dimension, a microscopic transverse second track dimension normal to said longitudinal second track dimension and co-planar therewith in a second track plane, and a microscopic vertical second track dimension normal to said second track plane.
- 18. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 17, wherein the transverse extent of said first feature does not exceed the transverse extent of said first track.
- 19. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 17, wherein the width of said first feature, measured at half depth is not more than approximately 110% of the width of said first track measured at half depth.
- 20. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 17, wherein the transverse extent of said first track is substantially identical to the transverse extent of said second track.
- 21. The hybrid structure as recited in claim 20, wherein said first track and said second track comprises one substantially continuous track.
- 22. A parent hybrid disc structure comprising:
a. a first region storing selectively retrievable data,
(1) a quantum of said data represented, in said first region, by a first data feature, each said first data feature comprising a three-dimensional first principal feature, said first principal feature having a longitudinal first feature dimension, a microscopic transverse first feature dimension normal to said longitudinal first feature dimension and co-planar therewith in a first feature plane and a microscopic vertical first feature dimension normal to said first feature plane, said plurality of first data features stored, in said first region, longitudinally along a portion of a first track in said hybrid structure; (2) said portion of said first track, having a longitudinal first track dimension, a microscopic transverse first track dimension normal to said longitudinal first track dimension and co-planar therewith in a first track plane and a microscopic vertical first track dimension normal to said first track plane; said first region further comprising:
(3) an effective land level vertically displaced in a first direction from said first track plane and from said first data feature,
(a) the extent of said vertical first feature dimension, measured from said effective land level, exceeds 350 nanometers, and (b) the extent of said vertical first track dimension, measured from said effective land level, is less than 170 nanometers; and b. a second region comprising a second track, a portion of said second track having a longitudinal second track dimension, a microscopic transverse second track dimension normal to said longitudinal second track dimension and co-planar therewith in a second track plane, and a microscopic vertical second track dimension normal to said second track plane; and wherein: c. said parent structure is configured so that a final hybrid structure may be produced therefrom, said final hybrid structure containing
(1) secondary data features representing, respectively, the quanta of data represented by the corresponding first data features, said data being selectively retrievable from said final hybrid structure; and (2) a guide track, corresponding to said second track, into which tertiary features representing quanta of further data may selectively be recorded and from which said further data may be selectively retrieved.
- 23. A final hybrid structure replicated from the parent hybrid disc as recited in claim 22.
- 24. An intermediary hybrid structure replicated from the parent structure recited in claim 22, from which the final structure recited in claim 23 may be replicated.
- 25. A parent hybrid disc structure comprising:
a. a first region storing selectively retrievable data,
(1) a quantum of said data represented, in said first region, by a first data feature, each said first data feature comprising a three-dimensional first principal feature, said first principal feature having a longitudinal first feature dimension, a microscopic transverse first feature dimension normal to said longitudinal first feature dimension and co-planar therewith in a first feature plane and a microscopic vertical first feature dimension normal to said first feature plane, said plurality of first data features stored, in said first region, longitudinally along a portion of a first track in said hybrid structure; (2) said portion of said first track, having a longitudinal first track dimension, a microscopic transverse first track dimension normal to said longitudinal first track dimension and co-planar therewith in a first track plane and a microscopic vertical first track dimension normal to said first track plane; said first region further comprising:
(3) an effective land level vertically displaced in a first direction from said first track plane and from said first data feature,
(a) the extent of said vertical first feature dimension, measured from said effective land level, is less than 250 nanometers, and (b) the extent of said vertical first track dimension, measured from said effective land level, is less than 170 nanometers; and b. a second region comprising a second track, a portion of said second track having a longitudinal second track dimension, a microscopic transverse second track dimension normal to said longitudinal second track dimension and co-planar therewith in a second track plane, and a microscopic vertical second track dimension normal to said second track plane; and wherein:
c. said parent structure is configured so that a final hybrid structure may be produced therefrom, said final hybrid structure containing
(1) secondary data features representing, respectively, the quanta of data represented by the corresponding first data features, said data being selectively retrievable from said final hybrid structure; and (2) a guide track, corresponding to said second track, into which tertiary features representing quanta of further data may selectively be recorded and from which said further data may be selectively retrieved.
- 26. A final hybrid structure replicated from the parent hybrid disc as recited in claim 25.
- 27. An intermediary hybrid structure replicated from the parent structure recited in claim 25, from which the final structure recited in claim 26 may be replicated.
- 28. A hybrid structure comprising:
a. a first region storing selectively retrievable data,
(1) a quantum of said data represented, in said first region, by a first data feature, each said first data feature comprising a three-dimensional first principal feature, said first principal feature having a longitudinal first feature dimension, a microscopic transverse first feature dimension normal to said longitudinal first feature dimension and co-planar therewith in a first feature plane and a microscopic vertical first feature dimension normal to said first feature plane, said plurality of first data features stored, in said first region, longitudinally along a portion of a first track in said hybrid structure; (2) said portion of said first track, having a longitudinal first track dimension, a microscopic transverse first track dimension normal to said longitudinal first track dimension and co-planar therewith in a first track plane and a microscopic vertical first track dimension normal to said first track plane, wherein:
(a) the transverse extent of said first principal feature does not substantially exceed the transverse extent of said first track; and (b) the width of said first principal feature, measured at one-half of the vertical first feature dimension is not more than approximately 110% of the width of said first track, measured at one-half of the vertical first track dimension; and b. a second region comprising a second track, a portion of said second track having a longitudinal second track dimension, a microscopic transverse second track dimension normal to said longitudinal second track dimension and co-planar therewith in a second track plane, and a microscopic vertical second track dimension normal to said second track plane.
