Claims
- 1. A process for the preparation of an optically active hydantoin derivative of the formula ##STR34## wherein Y and Z are the same or different, each being a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same or different, each being a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, which comprises reacting an optically active compound of the formula ##STR35## with an alkali metal cyanide and ammonium carbonate, reacting the resulting optically active compound of the formula ##STR36## in the presence of an acid catalyst, with a compound of the formula ROH wherein R is an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, while azeotropically removing water as it is formed, and reacting the resulting optically active compound of the formula ##STR37## with a compound of the formula HNR.sub.1 R.sub.2.
- 2. A process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the compound of the formula HNR.sub.1 R.sub.2 is gaseous ammonia.
