Claims
- 1. A variable compression ratio engine comprising a connecting rod via which a crankshaft that rotates about a crank axis reciprocates a piston within a cylinder, wherein the connecting rod comprises:a first part and a second part that are relatively positionable to set the effective length of the connecting rod, and hence the compression ratio of the cylinder, and a hydraulic-operated locking mechanism that is selectively operable to a locked condition for locking the first part to the second part in a position that sets a given effective length for the connecting rod and to an unlocked condition that allows the first and second parts to be relatively positioned to an effective length different from the given effective length; and a hydraulic circuit for operating the locking mechanism comprising a hydraulic pump for delivering hydraulic fluid to the connecting rod, and a hydraulic fluid augmentation source for at times augmenting the delivery of hydraulic fluid to the connecting rod, and a valve; wherein the pump is arranged to supply hydraulic fluid to the connecting rod at least during times when the locking mechanism is not being operated, and operation of the valve is effective to communicate the hydraulic fluid augmentation source to the locking mechanism to augment delivery of hydraulic fluid to the connecting rod for causing the locking mechanism to operate from one condition to the other condition.
- 2. A variable compression ratio engine as set forth in claim 1 in which the hydraulic fluid augmentation source comprises a hydraulic accumulator.
- 3. A variable compression ratio engine as set forth in claim 2 in which the hydraulic fluid augmentation source comprises a hydraulic pump for charging the accumulator.
- 4. A variable compression ratio engine as set forth in claim 1 in which the hydraulic fluid augmentation source comprises a hydraulic pump.
- 5. A variable compression ratio engine as set forth in claim 1 in which the connecting rod is supplied with hydraulic fluid from each of two passages extending from respective main bearing journals of the crankshaft, the valve selectively communicates the hydraulic power supply with one of the two passages.
- 6. A variable compression ratio engine as set forth in claim 5 wherein the valve also selectively communicates the pump with the other of the two passages.
- 7. A variable compression ratio engine as set forth in claim 6 including a first pressure relief valve for relieving pressure in the first passage, and a second pressure relief valve for relieving pressure in the second passage.
- 8. A variable compression ratio engine comprising a connecting rod via which a crankshaft that rotates about a crank axis reciprocates a piston within a cylinder, wherein the connecting rod comprises:a first part and a second part that are relatively positionable to set the effective length of the connecting rod, and hence the compression ratio of the cylinder, and a hydraulic-operated locking mechanism that is selectively operable to a locked condition for locking the first part to the second part in a position that sets a given effective length for the connecting rod and to an unlocked condition that allows the first and second parts to be relatively positioned to an effective length different from the given effective length; and a hydraulic circuit for operating the locking mechanism comprising a hydraulic joint between one of the parts and a crank pin of the crankshaft on which the one part is journaled, the hydraulic joint being constructed and arranged to provide for continuous communication of a hydraulic passage in the crankshaft with the locking mechanism as the one part revolves on the crank pin.
- 9. A variable compression ratio engine as set forth in claim 8 including a bearing between the crank pin and the one part circumferentially surrounding the crank pin, the bearing comprising two series of through-holes each within a limited circumferential span in a respective opposite half of the bearing, each series being centrally disposed relative to opposite circumferential ends of each bearing half, and portions of each bearing half extending circumferentially from each series of through-holes being imperforate.
- 10. A variable compression ratio engine as set forth in claim 9 in which the imperforate regions are disposed to react longitudinal force components in the connecting rod.
- 11. A variable compression ratio engine as set forth in claim 9 in which the crank pin comprises three radial passages having outlet ends from which fluid can pass to the bearing through-holes.
- 12. A variable compression ratio engine as set forth in claim 11 in which the outlet ends of the three passages are flared.
