Claims
- 1. A knuckle boom apparatus, comprising:a machine base; a hoist boom having a proximal end pivoted to the machine base, and a distal end remote therefrom; a stick boom having a proximal end pivoted to the distal end of the hoist boom, and a distal end specifically configured to carry a tree-working tool; at least one hydraulic hoist cylinder mounted between said machine base and said hoist boom; at least one hydraulic stick cylinder mounted between said hoist boom and said stick boom; at least one hydraulic reach cylinder mounted between said hoist boom and said stick boom; and a hydraulic circuit for operatively supplying hydraulic oil to said cylinders, wherein said hydraulic circuit comprises at least one hydraulic conduit line connecting respective base end ports of said hoist and stick cylinders so as to allow hydraulic oil to shunt between base ends of said hoist and stick cylinders.
- 2. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 1, wherein said hydraulic circuit further comprises at least one hydraulic oil conduit connecting respective rod end ports of said hoist and stick cylinders so as to allow hydraulic oil to shunt freely between said connected rod ends during operation.
- 3. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 1, wherein one operator-actuated control movement controls reaching, via operation of said reach cylinder, and a separate control movement controls lifting, via varying the total volume of hydraulic oil shared by said base ends of said hoist and stick cylinders.
- 4. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 1, further comprising selector valves in said hydraulic circuit, operable by an operator to disable said connection of at least one hydraulic conduit line connecting respective base end ports of said hoist and stick cylinders, and to instead allow conventional hydraulic operation.
- 5. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 1, further comprising a tree-working tool mounted on said distal end of said stick boom.
- 6. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 5, wherein said hydraulic circuit further comprises at least one hydraulic oil conduit connecting respective rod end ports of said hoist and stick cylinders so as to allow hydraulic oil to shunt freely between said connected rod ends during operation.
- 7. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 5, wherein said tree-working tool is pivotally mounted on said distal end of said stick boom about a lateral axis, further comprising a tilt cylinder mounted between said stick boom and said tool, connected to vary the angle between said tool and said stick boom.
- 8. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 7, wherein said tilt cylinder is below said stick boom, further comprising a sender cylinder connected between said hoist boom and said stick boom, having its base port connected to a base port of said tilt cylinder so as to allow hydraulic oil to shunt freely between bases of said sender and tilt cylinders during operation, whereby said tilt cylinder will extend as said sender cylinder retracts, and vice versa, thereby tending to automatically maintain the orientation of said tool, subject to calibration of cylinder volumes and geometries.
- 9. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 7, wherein said tilt cylinder is above said stick boom, further comprising a sender cylinder connected between said machine base and said hoist boom, having its base port connected to a base port of said tilt cylinder so as to allow hydraulic oil to shunt freely between bases of said sender and tilt cylinders during operation, whereby said tilt cylinder will extend as said sender cylinder retracts, and vice versa, thereby tending to automatically maintain the orientation of said tool, subject to calibration of cylinder volumes and geometries.
- 10. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 7, wherein one operator-actuated control movement controls reaching, via operation of said reach cylinder, and a separate control movement controls lifting, via varying the total volume of hydraulic oil shared by said base ends of said hoist and stick cylinders.
- 11. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 10, wherein yet another control movement controls tilting of said tree-working tool pivotally mounted on the distal end of the stick boom, via operation of a tilt cylinder connected to vary the angle between said stick boom and said tool.
- 12. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 5, further comprising selector valves in said hydraulic circuit, operable by an operator to disable said connection of at least one hydraulic conduit line connecting respective base end ports of said hoist and stick cylinders, and to instead allow conventional hydraulic operation.
- 13. A knuckle boom apparatus, comprising:a machine base; a hoist boom having a proximal end pivoted to the machine base, and a distal end remote therefrom; a stick boom having a proximal end pivoted to the distal end of the hoist boom, and a distal end specifically configured to carry a tree-working tool; at least one hydraulic hoist cylinder mounted between said machine base and said hoist boom; at least one hydraulic stick cylinder mounted between said hoist boom and said stick boom; at least one hydraulic reach cylinder mounted between said machine base and said hoist boom; and a hydraulic circuit for operatively supplying hydraulic oil to said cylinders, wherein said hydraulic circuit comprises at least one hydraulic conduit line connecting respective base end ports of said hoist and stick cylinders so as to allow hydraulic oil to shunt between base ends of said hoist and stick cylinders.
- 14. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 13, wherein said hydraulic circuit further comprises at least one hydraulic oil conduit connecting respective rod end ports of said hoist and stick cylinders so as to allow hydraulic oil to shunt freely between said connected rod ends during operation.
- 15. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 13, wherein one operator-actuated control movement controls reaching, via operation of said reach cylinder, and a separate control movement controls lifting, via varying the total volume of hydraulic oil shared by said base ends of said hoist and stick cylinders.
- 16. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 13, further comprising selector valves in said hydraulic circuit, operable by an operator to disable said connection of at least one hydraulic conduit line connecting respective base end ports of said hoist and stick cylinders, and to instead allow conventional hydraulic operation.
- 17. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 13, further comprising a tree-working tool mounted on said distal end of said stick boom.
- 18. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 17, wherein said hydraulic circuit further comprises at least one hydraulic oil conduit connecting respective rod end ports of said hoist and stick cylinders so as to allow hydraulic oil to shunt freely between said connected rod ends during operation.
- 19. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 17, wherein said tree-working tool is pivotally mounted on said distal end of said stick boom about a lateral axis, further comprising a tilt cylinder mounted between said stick boom and said tool, connected to vary the angle between said tool and said stick boom.
- 20. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 19, wherein said tilt cylinder is below said stick boom, further comprising a sender cylinder connected between said hoist boom and said stick boom, having its base port connected to a base port of said tilt cylinder so as to allow hydraulic oil to shunt freely between bases of said sender and tilt cylinders during operation, whereby said tilt cylinder will extend as said sender cylinder retracts, and vice versa, thereby tending to automatically maintain the orientation of said tool, subject to calibration of cylinder volumes and geometries.
- 21. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 19, wherein said tilt cylinder is above said stick boom, further comprising a sender cylinder connected between said machine base and said hoist boom, having its base port connected to a base port of said tilt cylinder so as to allow hydraulic oil to shunt freely between bases of said sender and tilt cylinders during operation, whereby said tilt cylinder will extend as said sender cylinder retracts, and vice versa, thereby tending to automatically maintain the orientation of said tool, subject to calibration of cylinder volumes and geometries.
- 22. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 19, wherein one operator-actuated control movement controls reaching, via operation of said reach cylinder, and a separate control movement controls lifting, via varying the total volume of hydraulic oil shared by said base ends of said hoist and stick cylinders.
- 23. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 22, wherein yet another control movement controls tilting of said tree-working tool pivotally mounted on the distal end of the stick boom, via operation of a tilt cylinder connected to vary the angle between said stick boom and said tool.
- 24. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 17, further comprising selector valves in said hydraulic circuit, operable by an operator to disable said connection of at least one hydraulic conduit line connecting respective base end ports of said hoist and stick cylinders, and to instead allow conventional hydraulic operation.
- 25. A knuckle boom apparatus, comprising:a machine base; a hoist boom having a proximal end pivoted to the machine base, and a distal end remote therefrom; a stick boom having a proximal end pivoted to the distal end of the hoist boom, and a distal end; a tree-working tool mounted on said distal end of said stick boom; a first hoist-located hydraulic cylinder mounted beneath said hoist boom and pinned to stroke between said machine base and said hoist boom; a second hoist-located hydraulic cylinder mounted beneath said hoist boom and pinned to operate the angle between said machine base and said hoist boom; a hydraulic stick cylinder located beneath said hoist and stick booms to stroke between said hoist and stick booms; and a hydraulic circuit with at least first and second directional control valves for operatively supplying hydraulic oil to said cylinders; wherein a base end hydraulic port of said first hoist-located hydraulic cylinder is connected via hydraulic conduit to a base end hydraulic port of said stick cylinder; a hydraulic conduit connects said so-connected base end ports to a first work port of said first directional valve; and the second of said hoist-located cylinders is connected via hydraulic conduit to said second directional valve to operate as a reach cylinder whereby a manual operation of only said second directional valve causes all said cylinders to stroke simultaneously and said stick boom distal end to move in a desired path.
- 26. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 25, wherein said hydraulic circuit includes a hydraulic conduit line connecting the rod end port of said first hoist-located cylinder and the rod end port of said stick cylinder and a second work port of said first directional control valve.
- 27. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 26, wherein said first hoist-located cylinder has different bore and rod diameter sizes from those of the stick cylinder, but wherein the ratio between the rod diameter and the piston diameter of said stick cylinder is equal to the ratio between the rod diameter and the piston diameter of said first hoist-located cylinder.
- 28. A knuckle boom apparatus, comprising:a machine base; a hoist boom having a proximal end pivoted to the machine base, and a distal end remote therefrom; a stick boom having a proximal end pivoted to the distal end of the hoist boom, and a distal end; a tree-working tool mounted on said distal end of said stick boom; a hydraulic hoist cylinder mounted beneath said hoist boom and pinned between said machine base and said hoist boom to stroke between said hoist boom and said machine base; a first stick-located hydraulic cylinder mounted beneath said hoist boom and said stick boom and pinned between said hoist boom and said stick boom to stroke between said hoist boom and said stick boom; a second stick-located hydraulic cylinder mounted between said hoist boom and said stick boom and pinned between said hoist boom and said stick boom to operate the angle between said hoist boom and said stick boom; and a hydraulic circuit with at least first and second directional control valves for operatively supplying hydraulic oil to said cylinders; wherein a base end hydraulic port of said first stick-located hydraulic cylinder is connected via hydraulic conduit to the base end hydraulic port of said hoist cylinder;said so-connected base end ports are connected via hydraulic conduit to a work port of said first directional valve; and the second of said stick-located cylinders is connected via hydraulic conduit to said second directional valve to operate as a reach cylinder, whereby a manual operation of only said second directional valve causes all said cylinders to stroke simultaneously and said stick boom distal end to move in a desired near-horizontal path.
- 29. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 28, wherein there is a hydraulic conduit connecting a rod end port of the first said stick-located cylinder to a rod end port of said hoist cylinder and a second work port of said first directional control valve.
- 30. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 29, wherein said hoist cylinder comprises twin cylinders connected in parallel with bore and rod diameters identical to those of said first stick-located cylinder.
- 31. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 29, wherein said first stick-located hydraulic cylinder has a different diameter from that of said hoist cylinder, but wherein the ratio between rod and piston diameters of said first stick-located cylinder is equal to the ratio between rod and piston diameters of said hoist cylinder.
- 32. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 28, wherein the ratio between the base area of said hoist cylinder piston and the base area of said stick cylinder piston is approximately the same as the ratio between the stroke of the stick cylinder and the stroke of the hoist cylinder as the knuckle boom performs a generally horizontal reach.
- 33. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 29, wherein the ratio between the base area of said hoist cylinder piston and the base area of said stick cylinder piston is approximately the same as the ratio between the stroke of the stick cylinder and the stroke of the hoist cylinder as the knuckle boom performs a generally horizontal reach.
- 34. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 28, wherein said tree-working tool is a disc saw tree felling head.
- 35. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 28, wherein said tree-working tool is a tree delimbing head.
- 36. A knuckle boom apparatus as recited in claim 28, wherein said tree-working tool is a tree felling and delimbing head.
