Claims
- 1. A method for punching an opening in a downhole tubular element in a well bore, said method comprising:
providing a hydraulic tubing punch apparatus having a drive assembly slidably mounted therein for bidirectional longitudinal travel, a ramp formed along said drive assembly, said ramp being angled relative to the longitudinal axis of said apparatus, a pressure limiting device, and a penetrator element; connecting the upper end of said tubing punch apparatus to a work string; placing said tubing punch apparatus within a tubular element in a well bore; applying hydraulic pressure to drive said drive assembly in a first longitudinal direction within said apparatus until said pressure limiting device substantially limits said hydraulic pressure upon substantially full travel of said drive assembly, causing said ramp to move said penetrator element transversely outwardly, to cause an outer end of said penetrator element to penetrate said tubular element within which said tubing punch apparatus is placed; and driving said drive assembly in a second longitudinal direction within said apparatus, causing said ramp to move said penetrator element transversely inwardly, to withdraw said outer end of said penetrator element from said tubular element.
- 2. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein said hydraulic movement of said drive assembly in said first longitudinal direction moves said drive assembly away from said work string, said method further comprising:
providing a release mechanism connecting said tubing punch apparatus to the work string, and a slidable connection between said drive assembly and said work string; releasing said release mechanism after substantially fill travel of said drive assembly; and mechanically performing said driving of said drive assembly in said second longitudinal direction by pulling on the work string, after releasing of said release mechanism, to partially longitudinally withdraw said drive assembly from said tubing punch apparatus; wherein said ramp withdraws said outer end of said penetrator element from said tubular element as said drive assembly is partially withdrawn longitudinally from said tubing punch apparatus.
- 3. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein said apparatus further comprises an anchor mechanism, said method further comprising anchoring said apparatus within said tubular element in the well bore with said anchor mechanism prior to driving said drive assembly hydraulically in said first longitudinal direction.
