Claims
- 1. A transparent nonlinear optical medium comprising a thermoplastic polymer which is characterized by a recurring monomeric unit corresponding to the formula: ##STR11## where R is a substituent selected from hydrogen and C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl groups; and m is an integer of at least 3.
- 2. A nonlinear optical medium in accordance with claim 1 which is in the form of a film.
- 3. A nonlinear optical medium in accordance with claim 1 which is in the form of a coating on a transparent optical substrate.
- 4. A nonlinear optical medium in accordance with claim 1 wherein the medium has an external field-induced molecular orientation.
- 5. A nonlinear optical medium in accordance with claim 1 wherein the medium is noncentrosymmetric and exhibits second order nonlinear optical response.
- 6. A nonlinear optical medium in accordance with claim 1 wherein the medium is centrosymmetric and exhibits third order nonlinear optical response.
- 7. A light switch or light modulator device with a polymeric nonlinear optical component comprising a transparent solid medium of a polymer which is characterized by a recurring monomeric unit corresponding to the formula: ##STR12## where R is a substituent selected from hydrogen and C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl groups; and m is an integer of at least 3.
