Claims
- 1. Apparatus for cleaning an exterior surface of a pipe comprising:
- a frame suitable for being positioned on said pipe and for longitudinal movement relative to said pipe;
- a jet module, said jet module comprising at least one rotatable liquid jet nozzle directed toward the exterior surface of said pipe when said frame is positioned on said pipe; and
- a suspension linkage mounted on said frame, said jet module being mounted on said suspension linkage so that said at least one liquid jet nozzle of said jet module is rotated about a rotation axis which in use is at least substantially normal to the exterior surface of said pipe, said suspension linkage being constructed to permit said jet module to move radially relative to said pipe during the relative longitudinal movement between said frame and said pipe while the orientation of said rotation axis is maintained;
- wherein said suspension linkage comprises a parallel linkage.
- 2. Apparatus for cleaning an exterior surface of a pipe comprising:
- a frame suitable for being positioned on said pipe and for longitudinal movement relative to said pipe;
- a jet module, said jet module comprising at least one rotatable liquid jet nozzle directed toward the exterior surface of said pipe when said frame is positioned on said pipe; and
- a parallel linkage suspension linkage mounted on said frame, said jet module being mounted on said suspension linkage, said suspension linkage being constructed to permit said jet module to move radially relative to said pipe;
- wherein said suspension linkage comprises:
- an upper control arm having a first end and a second end, said first end of said upper control arm being pivotally mounted to said frame at a first pivot point;
- a lower control arm having a first end and a second end, said first end of said lower control arm being pivotally mounted to said frame at a second pivot point;
- an end link, said end link being pivotally mounted to said second end of said upper control arm at a third pivot point, said end link being pivotally mounted to said second end of said lower control arm at a fourth pivot point, said end link being pivotally mounted to said jet module at a fifth pivot point; and
- an hydraulic actuator having a first end and a second end, said first end of said hydraulic actuator being pivotally mounted to said frame, said second end of said hydraulic actuator being pivotally mounted to said end link.
- 3. Apparatus in accordance with claim 2 wherein said hydraulic actuator is biased so that said jet module is forced toward said exterior surface of said pipe when said apparatus is in use.
- 4. Apparatus in accordance with claim 2 wherein said end link has a hole formed therethrough, an eye bolt is mounted through said hole in said end link, said eye bolt having an adjustment nut mounted thereon adjacent said end link, a transverse stud is mounted through the eye of said eye bolt, said transverse stud having a first end and a second end, said first end of said transverse stud being mounted to said jet module, whereby the relative orientation of said jet module relative to said exterior surface of said pipe can be adjusted by adjusting said adjustment nut on said eye bolt.
- 5. Apparatus in accordance with claim 4 wherein said frame defines a longitudinal passage therethrough of a size sufficient to accommodate said pipe such that, by relative movement between said pipe and said frame, said pipe can effectively pass longitudinally through said frame.
- 6. Apparatus in accordance with claim 5 further comprising an adjustment bracket having a plurality of mounting positions for the suspension linkage, said adjustment bracket being mounted on said frame, said suspension linkage being adjustably mounted to said frame through said adjustment bracket whereby orientation of said jet module can be adjusted by selectively mounting said suspension linkage at one of said plurality of mounting positions on said adjustment bracket.
- 7. Apparatus in accordance with claim 6, further comprising a guide mounted on said jet module, said guide being constructed to ride along said exterior surface of said pipe during operation of said apparatus, said guide being mounted on said jet module so as to effect radial movement of said jet module relative to said exterior surface of said pipe upon encountering surface irregularities along said exterior surface of said pipe.
- 8. Apparatus in accordance with claim 7 further comprising an adjustable stop mounted between said end link and said jet module, said adjustable stop being constructed to selectively maintain a predetermined amount of separation between said guide and said exterior surface of said pipe when said apparatus is in use.
- 9. Apparatus for cleaning an exterior surface of a pipe comprising:
- a frame suitable for being positioned on said pipe and for longitudinal movement relative to said pipe;
- a jet module, said jet module comprising at least one rotatable liquid jet nozzle directed toward the exterior surface of said pipe when said frame is positioned on said pipe;
- a suspension linkage mounted on said frame, said jet module being mounted on said suspension linkage, said suspension linkage being constructed to permit said jet module to move radially relative to said pipe; and
- an adjustment bracket having a plurality of mounting positions for the suspension linkage, said adjustment bracket being mounted on said frame, said suspension linkage being adjustably mounted to said frame through said adjustment bracket whereby orientation of said jet module can be adjusted by selectively mounting said suspension linkage at one of said plurality of mounting positions on said adjustment bracket.
- 10. Apparatus for cleaning an exterior surface of a pipe comprising:
- a frame suitable for being positioned on said pipe and for longitudinal movement relative to said pipe;
- a jet module, said jet module comprising at least one rotatable liquid jet nozzle directed toward the exterior surface of said pipe when said frame is positioned on said pipe;
- a suspension linkage mounted on said frame, said jet module being mounted on said suspension linkage, said suspension linkage being constructed to permit said jet module to move radially relative to said pipe; and
- a guide mounted on said jet module, said guide being constructed to ride along said exterior surface of said pipe during operation of said apparatus, said guide being mounted on said jet module so as to effect radial movement of said jet module relative to said exterior surface of said pipe upon encountering surface irregularities along said exterior surface of said pipe.
- 11. Apparatus in accordance with claim 16 further comprising an adjustable stop to selectively maintain a predetermined amount of separation between said guide and said exterior surface of said pipe when said apparatus is in use.
- 12. An apparatus for cleaning an exterior surface of a pipe comprising:
- a frame defining a longitudinal passage therethrough of a size sufficient to permit said pipe to effectively pass longitudinally through said frame upon relative longitudinal motion between said frame and said pipe;
- a plurality of suspension linkages mounted on said frame;
- a plurality of jet modules, each jet module comprising at least one rotatable liquid jet nozzle directed toward said exterior surface of said pipe, each jet module being mounted to said frame through a respective one of said suspension linkages, each suspension linkage being constructed to permit the associated jet module to move radially relative to said pipe; and
- a plurality of hydraulic actuators, each hydraulic actuator being associated with a respective suspension linkage, each hydraulic actuator having a first end and a second end, the first end of each hydraulic actuator being mounted to said frame and the second end of each hydraulic actuator being mounted to the respective suspension linkage, each hydraulic actuator being constructed to effect radial movement of the respective jet module relative to said pipe.
- 13. Apparatus in accordance with claim 12 wherein each hydraulic actuator is biased such that each respective jet module is forced toward said exterior surface of said pipe when said apparatus is in use.
- 14. Apparatus in accordance with claim 13 wherein each said suspension linkage comprises:
- an upper control arm having a first end and a second end, the first end of the upper control arm being pivotally mounted to said frame at a first pivot point;
- a lower control arm having a first end and a second end, the first end of the lower control arm being pivotally mounted to said frame at a second pivot point; and
- an end link, the end link being pivotally mounted to the second end of the upper control arm at a third pivot point, the end link being pivotally mounted to the second end of the lower control arm at a fourth pivot point, the end link being pivotally mounted to the associated jet module at a fifth pivot point.
- 15. Apparatus in accordance with claim 14 wherein each jet module has a guide mounted thereon to ride along said exterior surface of said pipe during operation of said apparatus, each guide being mounted on the respective jet module so as to effect radial movement of the respective jet module relative to said exterior surface of said pipe upon the respective guide encountering surface irregularities along said exterior surface of said pipe.
- 16. An apparatus for cleaning an exterior surface of a pipe comprising:
- a frame defining a longitudinal passage therethrough of a size sufficient to permit said pipe to effectively pass longitudinally through said frame upon relative longitudinal motion between said frame and said pipe;
- a plurality of suspension linkages mounted on said frame; and
- a plurality of jet modules, each jet module comprising at least one rotatable liquid jet nozzle directed toward said exterior surface of said pipe, each jet module being mounted to said frame through a respective one of said suspension linkages, each suspension linkage being constructed to permit the associated jet module to move radially relative to said pipe;
- wherein the jet modules are arranged on said frame such that the jet modules effect cleaning of the entire circumference of said exterior surface of said pipe during a single pass of said pipe through said apparatus.
- 17. An apparatus for cleaning an exterior surface of a pipe comprising:
- a frame defining a longitudinal passage therethrough of a size sufficient to permit said pipe to effectively pass longitudinally through said frame upon relative longitudinal motion between said frame and said pipe;
- a plurality of suspension linkages mounted on said frame; and
- a plurality of jet modules, each jet module comprising at least one rotatable liquid jet nozzle directed toward said exterior surface of said pipe, each jet module being mounted to said frame through a respective one of said suspension linkages, each suspension linkage being constructed to permit the associated jet module to move radially relative to said pipe;
- wherein each said suspension linkage comprises:
- an upper control arm having a first end and a second end, the first end of the upper control arm being pivotally mounted to said frame at a first pivot point;
- a lower control arm having a first end and a second end, the first end of the lower control arm being pivotally mounted to said frame at a second pivot point; and
- an end link, the end link being pivotally mounted to the second end of the upper control arm at a third pivot point, the end link being pivotally mounted to the second end of the lower control arm at a fourth pivot point, the end link being pivotally mounted to the associated jet module at a fifth pivot point.
- 18. Apparatus in accordance with claim 17 wherein in each suspension linkage the end link has a hole formed therethrough, an eye bolt is mounted through the hold, the eye bolt having an adjustment nut mounted thereon adjacent the end link, a transverse stud is mounted through the eye of the eye bolt, the transverse stud having a first end and a second end, the first end of the transverse stud being mounted to the respective jet module, whereby the relative orientation of the respective jet module relative to said exterior surface of said pipe can be adjusted by adjusting the adjustment nut on the respective eye bolt.
- 19. Apparatus for cleaning an exterior surface of a pipe comprising:
- a frame suitable for being positioned on said pipe and for longitudinal movement relative to said pipe;
- a jet module, said jet module comprising at least one rotatable liquid jet nozzle directed toward the exterior surface of said pipe when said frame is positioned on said pipe; and
- a suspension linkage mounted on said frame, said jet module being mounted on said suspension linkage, said suspension linkage being constructed to permit said jet module to move radially relative to said pipe during the relative longitudinal movement between said frame and said pipe;
- wherein said suspension linkage comprises:
- an upper control arm having a first end and a second end, said first end of said upper control arm being pivotally mounted to said frame at a first pivot point;
- a lower control arm having a first end and a second end, said first end of said lower control arm being pivotally mounted to said frame at a second pivot point; and
- an end link, said end link being pivotally mounted to said second end of said upper control arm at a third pivot point, said end link being pivotally mounted to said second end of said lower control arm at a fourth pivot point, said end link being pivotally mounted to said jet module at a fifth pivot point.
- 20. Apparatus in accordance with claim 19 wherein said end link has a hole formed therethrough, an eye bolt is mounted through said hole in said end link, said eye bolt having an adjustment nut mounted thereon adjacent said end link, a transverse stud is mounted through the eye of said eye bolt, said transverse stud having a first end and a second end, said first end of said transverse stud being mounted to said jet module, whereby the relative orientation of said jet module relative to said exterior surface of said pipe can be adjusted by adjusting said adjustment nut on said eye bolt.
- 21. Apparatus in accordance with claim 19 further comprising an adjustment bracket having a plurality of mounting positions for the suspension linkage, said adjustment bracket being mounted on said frame, said suspension linkage being adjustable mounted to said frame through said adjustment bracket whereby orientation of said jet module can be adjusted by selectively mounting said suspension linkage at one of said plurality of mounting positions on said adjustment bracket.
- 22. Apparatus in accordance with claim 19 further comprising a guide mounted on said jet module, said guide being constructed to ride along said exterior surface of said pipe during operation of said apparatus, said guide being mounted on said jet module so as to effect radial movement of said jet module relative to said exterior surface of said pipe upon encountering surface irregularities along said exterior surface of said pipe.
- 23. Apparatus in accordance with claim 22 further comprising an adjustable stop mounted between said end link and said jet module, said adjustable stop being constructed to selectively maintain a predetermined amount of separation between said guide and said exterior surface of said pipe when said apparatus is in use.
- 24. Apparatus for cleaning an exterior surface of a pipe comprising:
- a frame suitable for being positioned on said pipe and for longitudinal movement relative to said pipe;
- a jet module, said jet module comprising at least one rotatable liquid jet nozzle directed toward the exterior surface of said pipe when said frame is positioned on said pipe;
- a suspension linkage mounted on said frame, said jet module being mounted on said suspension linkage, said suspension linkage being constructed to permit said jet module to move radially relative to said pipe during the relative longitudinal movement between said frame and said pipe; and
- an hydraulic actuator having a first end and a second end, said first end of said hydraulic actuator being mounted to said frame, said second end of said hydraulic actuator being mounted to said suspension linkage, said hydraulic actuator being constructed to effect radial movement of said jet module relative to said pipe.
- 25. Apparatus in accordance with claim 24 wherein said hydraulic actuator is biased so that said jet module is forced toward said exterior surface of said pipe when said apparatus is in use.
- 26. Apparatus in accordance with claim 24 further comprising an adjustment bracket having a plurality of mounting positions for the suspension linkage, said adjustment bracket being mounted on said frame, said suspension linkage being adjustably mounted to said frame through said adjustment bracket whereby orientation of said jet module can be adjusted by selectively mounting said suspension linkage at one of said plurality of mounting positions on said adjustment bracket.
- 27. Apparatus in accordance with claim 24 further comprising a guide mounted on said jet module, said guide being constructed to ride along said exterior surface of said pipe during operation of said apparatus, said guide being mounted on said jet module so as to effect radial movement of said jet module relative to said exterior surface of said pipe upon encountering surface irregularities along said exterior surface of said pipe.
