Claims
- 1. A high modulus, high strength melt processable copolyester consisting essentially of recurring units (I), (II), (III) and (IV): ##STR8## wherein said copolyester has a melting point in the range of from about 340.degree. C. to 400.degree. C., a crystallization temperature of from about 300.degree. C.-340.degree. C., and a crystallization rate of at least 1,000 counts/minute.
- 2. The polyesters of claim 1 further comprising about 30 weight glass fiber and having a heat distortion temperature of about 240.degree. C. to about 280.degree. C. under a load of 264 psi.
- 3. The polyester of claim 1 wherein the sum of the number of units of (II) and (III) is approximately equal to the number of unit (I) and the ratio of unit (IV) ranges from about 0.25 to 0.55.
- 4. The polyester of claim 1 wherein the sum of the number of units of (II) and (III) is approximately equal to the number of unit (I) and the ratio of unit (IV) ranges from about 0.50 to 9.0.
- 5. A melt processable composition comprising from about 1 to 19 parts by weight of the polyester of claim 1 per 1 part by weight of a polyester comprising recurring units (V), (VI), (VII) and (VIII). ##STR9## where a is approximately equal to b+c; b is in the range of from about 0.5 to about 0.8; c is in the range of from about 0.50 to about 0.2; d is in the range of from about 1 to about 7, and where the number average molecular weight of said polyesters is from about 2,000 to about 200,000.
- 6. The method of preparing the copolyester of claim 1 which comprises reacting hydroquinone, isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid and hydroxybenzoic acid in a solvent comprising an anhydride of a lower monocarboxylic acid.
- 7. The process of claim 6 wherein said reaction is carried out in the presence of a salt selected from the group consisting of an alkaline earth metal salt and an alkali metal salt.
- 8. A high modulus, high strength melt-processable polyester consisting essentially of recurring units (I), (II), (III), and (IV): ##STR10## having a melting point in the range of from about 340.degree. C. -400 .degree. C., a crystallization temperature of 300.degree.-340.degree. C., a crystallization rate of at least 1,000 counts/minute; and when filled with 30 percent by weight glass fibers, has a Heat Distortion Temperature of at least 240.degree. C. under a load of 264 psi.
- 9. The polyester of claim 8 wherein the ratios of units (I), (II), (III) and (IV) are such that the composition of the polyester is defined by the rectilinear areas of triangular phase diagram FIG. 1 selected from the group consisting of rectilinear area A such that the ratios of (II) (III) and IV) are as follows:
- (II).perspectiveto.0.05 to 0.70
- (III).perspectiveto.0.30 to 0.50
- (IV).perspectiveto.b 0.25 to 0.55
- and of rectilinear area B such that the ratios of (II), (III) and (IV) are as follows;
- (II).perspectiveto.0 to 0.80
- (III).perspectiveto.0.2 to 1.0
- (IV).perspectiveto.0.55 to 9.0.
- 10. The polyester of claim 9 wherein the ratios of units (I), (II), (III) and(IV) fall within the rectilinear area A of the triangular phase diagram FIG. 1. and are as follows:
- (II).perspectiveto.0.50 to 0.70
- (III).perspectiveto.0.30 to 0.50
- (IV).perspectiveto.0.25 to 0.55.
- 11. The polyester of claim 8 wherein the sum of the number of units of (II) and (III) is approximately equal to (I) and the ratio of (IV) ranges from about 0.20 to 0.55.
- 12. The polyester of claim 8 wherein the sum of the number of units of (II) and (III) is approximately equal to (I) and the ratio of (IV) ranges from about 0.50 to 9.0.
- 13. A melt processable composition comprising from about 1 to 19 parts by weight of the polyester of claim 8 per 1 part by weight of the polyester comprising recurring units (V), (VI), (VII) and (VIII): ##STR11## where a is approximately equal to b+c; b is in the range of from about 0.5 to about 0.8; c is in the range of from about 0.5 to about 0.2; d is in the range of from about 1 to about 7, preferably from about 2 to about 4; and where the molecular weight of said polyesters is from about 2,000 to about 200,000.
- 14. The method of preparing the polyester of claim 8 which comprises reacting hydroquinone, isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid and hydroxybenzoic acid in a solvent comprising an anhydride of a lower monocarboxylic acid.
