Claims
- 1. A transaxle for use in transferring a driving force created by a vehicle engine to a pair of wheels, comprising:
- a housing comprised of a lower section and an upper section joined along a split line, said lower section and said upper section each have a mating half-round section formed therein;
- a hydraulic pump unit disposed within said housing being drivingly linked to said vehicle engine;
- a hydraulic motor unit disposed within said housing being drivingly linked to said hydraulic pump unit;
- a rotatable motor shaft disposed within said housing being drivingly linked to said hydraulic motor;
- an axle shaft associated with said housing upon which said pair of wheels are mounted being drivingly linked to said rotatable motor shaft;
- a brake assembly disposed within said housing comprising at least one rotor plate and at least one stator plate; and
- a pin movably positioned between said half-round sections for use in urging said at least one stator plate into frictional engagement with said at least one rotor plate for use in slowing or stopping said rotatable motor shaft.
- 2. The transaxle as recited in claim 1, wherein said housing further comprises a brake cavity into which said rotatable motor shaft extends and within which said brake assembly is disposed and a transmission cavity in which said hydraulic pump unit and said hydraulic motor unit are disposed, said transaxle further comprising a seal, disposed around said rotatable motor shaft, for use in separating said brake cavity from said transmission cavity.
- 3. The transaxle as recited in claim 1, wherein the longitudinal axis of said rotatable motor shaft lies on said split line.
- 4. The transaxle as recited in claim 3, wherein the longitudinal axis of said axle shaft lies on said split line.
- 5. The transaxle as recited in claim 4, wherein said split line lies in a horizontal plane.
- 6. The transaxle as recited in claim 25, wherein said lower section and said upper section of said housing mate to encase said brake assembly.
- 7. The transaxle as recited in claim 6, wherein said housing further comprises a brake cavity into which said rotatable motor shaft extends and within which said brake assembly is encased and a transmission cavity in which said hydraulic pump unit and said hydraulic motor unit are disposed, said transaxle further comprising a seal, disposed around said rotatable motor shaft, for use in separating said brake cavity from said transmission cavity.
- 8. The transaxle as recited in claim 7, wherein the longitudinal axis of said rotatable motor shaft lies on said split line.
- 9. The transaxle as recited in claim 8, wherein said split line lies in a horizontal plane.
