Claims
- 1. An axle assembly comprising:
- a housing defined by first, second and third housing elements positioned along a substantially planar and horizontally peripheral seam formed therebetween such that said first and second housing elements are to one side of said seam;
- the third one of said housing elements being provided with first and second cavities and where the first cavity is joined by an opposing cavity provided by the first housing element to define a first chamber, the second cavity being joined by an opposing cavity provided by the second housing element to define a second chamber;
- a hydrostatic transmission disposed within said first chamber and comprising a hydraulic pump fluidly coupled to a hydraulic motor; an input power transmission shaft rotatably mounted in said housing and operatively connected to said hydraulic pump;
- speed reducing gearing disposed within said second chamber;
- a power transmission link comprising at least one shaft passing from said first chamber to said second chamber for the transmission of power between said hydraulic motor and said speed reducing gearing;
- at least one outwardly extending output power transmission shaft rotatably mounted in said housing and operatively connected to said speed reducing gearing.
- 2. An axle assembly according to claim 1 wherein a mechanical differential is disposed within said second chamber and drivingly connected between said speed reducing gearing and said at least one outwardly extending output power transmission shaft.
- 3. An axle assembly according to claim 1 wherein said first chamber formed by said first and third housing elements when combined in their assembled condition is in communication with said second chamber formed by said second and third housing elements in their assembled condition by way of a hollow bridging element.
- 4. An axle assembly according to claim 2 and including a hollow bridging element, said bridging element being seated on the one side in a pocket provided in said third one of said housing elements and the other side in pockets provided in said first and second housings elements, and wherein said connecting shaft passes through said bridging element.
- 5. An axle assembly according to claim 1 wherein the axis of rotation of said input shaft is arranged to be perpendicular with respect to the rotational axis of said connecting shaft.
- 6. An axle assembly according to claim 1 wherein said connecting shaft is arranged to have its axis of rotation parallel and substantially coincident with said seam.
- 7. An axle assembly according to claim 1 wherein said connecting shaft is arranged to have its axis of rotation parallel to said seam.
- 8. An axle assembly according to claim 1 wherein said connecting shaft is arranged to have its axis of rotation parallel to and offset from said seam.
- 9. An axle assembly according to claim 3 wherein said connecting shaft passes through said hollow bridging element and is arranged to have its axis of rotation parallel with respect to the axis of rotation of said at least one outwardly extending output power transmission shaft.
- 10. An axle assembly according to claim 9 wherein said connecting shaft further comprises a parking brake and a mechanical disengage mechanism, said mechanical disengage mechanism for disconnecting said power transmission link between said hydrostatic transmission and said speed reducing gearing when appropriate without rendering said parking brake inoperative.
- 11. An axle assembly according to claim 9 and including a seal member disposed in said hollow bridging element, said seal member arranged to segregate said first chamber from said second chamber such that the second one of said housing elements can be removed from said third one of said housing elements without necessitating the removal of the first one of said housing element from said third one of said housing elements.
- 12. An axle assembly according to claim 1 wherein said first and second housing elements are arranged not to be in direct contact with each other such that either one may be removed from said third one of said housing elements while leaving the other one still engaging with said third one of said housing elements.
- 13. An axle assembly according to claim 2 wherein said connecting shaft further comprises a parking brake and a mechanical disengage mechanism, said mechanical disengage mechanism for disconnecting said power transmission link between said hydrostatic transmission and said speed reducing gearing when appropriate without rendering said parking brake inoperative.
- 14. An axle assembly according to claim 3 wherein said connecting shaft passes through said hollow bridging element and is arranged to have its axis of rotation parallel and offset with respect to the axis of rotation of said at least one outwardly extending output power transmission shaft.
- 15. An axle assembly according to claim 4 wherein said connecting shaft passes through said hollow bridging element and is arranged to have its axis of rotation parallel and offset with respect to the axis of rotation of said at least one outwardly extending output power transmission shaft.
- 16. An axle assembly according to claim 8 and including a hollow bridging element, said bridging element being seated in a pocket provided in said third one of said housing elements and where said connecting shaft passes through said bridging element.
- 17. An axle assembly according to claim 9 wherein a mechanical differential is disposed within said second chamber and drivingly connected between said speed reducing gearing and said at least one outwardly extending output power transmission shaft.
- 18. An axle assembly comprising:
- a housing constituted by first, second and third housing elements and where said first and second housing elements co-operate with the third one of said housing elements to define first and second chambers;
- a hydrostatic transmission disposed within the first chamber and comprising a hydraulic pump fluidly coupled to a hydraulic motor; an input power transmission shaft rotatable mounted in said housing and operatively connected to said hydraulic pump;
- speed reducing gearing disposed within the second chamber;
- a power transmission link comprising at least one shaft passing from said first chamber to said second chamber for the transmission of power between said hydraulic motor and said speed reducing gearing;
- at least one outwardly extending output power transmission shaft rotatably mounted in said housing and operatively connected to said speed reducing gearing and where the rotational axis of said at least one outwardly extending output power transmission shaft is arranged to be parallel to the axis of rotation of said connecting shaft.
- 19. An axle assembly according to claim 18 wherein a mechanical differential is disposed within said second chamber and drivingly connected between said speed reducing gearing and said at least one outwardly extending output power transmission shaft.
- 20. An axle assembly according to claim 18 wherein said first chamber formed by said first and third housing elements when combined in their assembled condition is in communication with said second chamber formed by said second and third housing elements in their assembled condition by way of a hollow bridging element.
- 21. An axle assembly according to claim 19 and including a hollow bridging element, said bridging element being seated on the one side in a pocket provided in said third one of said housing elements and the other side in pockets provided in said first and second housing elements.
- 22. An axle assembly according to claim 20 and including a seal member disposed in said hollow bridging element, said seal member arranged to segregate said first chamber from said second chamber such that the second one of said housing elements can be removed from said third one of said housing elements without necessitating the removal of the first one of said housing element from said third one of said housing elements.
- 23. An axle assembly according to claim 19 wherein the axis of rotation of said input shaft is arranged to be perpendicular with respect to the rotational axis of said connecting shaft.
- 24. An axle assembly according to claim 20 wherein said connecting shaft passes through said hollow bridging element.
- 25. An axle assembly according to claim 21 wherein said connecting shaft passes through said hollow bridging element.
- 26. An axle assembly according to claim 18 wherein said first and second housing elements are arranged not to be in direct contact with each other such that either one may be removed from said third one of said housing elements while leaving the other one still engaging with said third one of said housing elements.
- 27. An axle assembly according to claim 18 wherein said connecting shaft further comprises a parking brake and a mechanical disengage mechanism, said mechanical disengage mechanism for disconnecting said power transmission link between said hydrostatic transmission and said speed reducing gearing when appropriate without rendering said parking brake inoperative.
- 28. An axle assembly comprising a housing constituted by first and second housing elements disposed adjacent one another on one side of a parting plane, and a third housing element disposed on the opposite side of said parting plane and connected to each of said first and second housing elements, said first and third housing elements together defining a first chamber in which a hydrostatic transmission is disposed, and said second and third housing elements together defining a second chamber in which a mechanical differential is disposed, said hydrostatic transmission and said mechanical differential being operatively interconnected via reduction gearing disposed within said housing.
- 29. An axle assembly according to claim 28 wherein said reduction gearing is disposed within said second chamber.
- 30. An axle assembly according to claim 29 wherein said first chamber formed by said first and third housing elements when combined in their assembled condition is in communication with said second chamber formed by said second and third housing elements in their assembled condition by way of a hollow bridging element.
- 31. An axle assembly according to claim 29 and including a hollow bridging element, said bridging element being seated on the one side in a pocket provided in said third housing element and the other side in pockets provided in said first and second housing elements, and wherein said connecting shaft passes through said bridging element.
- 32. An axle assembly according to claim 30 and including a connecting shaft comprising at least one coaxial shaft, said connecting shaft passing through said hollow bridging element for operatively connecting said hydrostatic transmission located in said first chamber with said mechanical differential located in said second chamber.
- 33. An axle assembly according to claim 29 wherein said first and second housing elements are arranged not to be in direct contact with each other such that either one may be removed from said third housing element while leaving the other one still engaging with said third housing element.
- 34. An axle assembly according to claim 30 and including a seal member disposed in said hollow bridging element, said seal member arranged to segregate said first chamber from said second chamber such that the second housing element can be removed from said third housing element without necessitating the removal of the first housing element from said third housing element.
