Claims
- 1. As a composition of matter, a supported hydroprocessing catalyst obtained by compositing a quantity of catalyst support material with a hydrated oxide of trivalent chromium and one or more precursor salts and heating said composite at elevated temperature of at least about 250.degree. C. to about 600.degree. C., in the presence of one or more of sulfur-bearing compounds for a time sufficient to form sulfides of chromium, wherein said catalyst support material is selected from the group consisting of alumina, diatomaceous earth, zeolite, silica, activated carbon, magnesia, zirconia, boria, chromia and titania, and wherein said precursor salt contains a tetrathiometallate anion of Mo, W or mixture thereof and a cation comprising the conjugate acid of one or more neutral, nitrogen-containing ligands, at least one of which is a chelating polydentate ligand.
- 2. The catalyst of claim 1 wherein said ligand is selected from the group consisting of alkyl amine, aryl amines, nitrogen heterocycles and mixtures thereof.
- 3. The catalyst of claim 2 wherein said support material comprises one or more refractory inorganic oxides.
- 4. The catalyst of claim 3 wherein ligand comprises an alkyl amine.
- 5. The catalyst of claim 4 wherein said non-oxidizing atmosphere comprises a mixture of H.sub.2 and H.sub.2 S.
- 6. A process for preparing a supported hydroprocessing catalyst, said process comprising compositing a quanitity of catalyst support material and a hydrated oxide of trivalent chromium with one or more precursor salts and heating said composite at elevated temperature of at least about 250.degree. C. to about 600.degree. C., in the presence of one or more sulfur-bearing compounds and under oxygen-free conditions for a time sufficient to form sulfide of said trivalent chromium, wherein said catalyst support material is selected from the group consisting of alumina, diatomaceous earth, zeolite, silica, activated carbon, magnesia, zirconia, boria, chromia and titania, and wherein said precursor salt contains a tetrathiometallate anion of Mo, W or mixture thereof and a cation comprising the conjugate acid of one or more neutral, nitrogen-containing polydentate ligands at least one of which is a chelating polydentate ligand.
- 7. The process of either of claims 6 wherein ligand is selected from the group consisting of alkyl amines, aryl amines, nitrogen heterocycles and mixtures thereof.
- 8. The process of claim 7 wherein said precursor salt is formed in the presence of a slurry of support material.
- 9. The process of claim 8 wherein said support material comprises an oxide of trivalent chromium.
- 10. The process of either of claims 8 or 9 wherein ligand comprises an alkyl amine.
- 11. The process of claim 10 wherein said non-oxidizing atmosphere comprises a mixture of H.sub.2 and H.sub.2 S.
- 12. As a composition of matter, a supported hydroprocessing catalyst obtained by compositing a quantity of inorganic refractory oxide support material and a hydrated oxide of trivalent chromium with one or more precursor salts and heating said composite at elevated temperature of at least about 250.degree. C. to about 600.degree. C., in the presence of excess sulfur in the form of one or more sulfur-bearing compounds and under oxygen-free conditions for a time sufficient to form sulfide of said trivalent chromium, wherein said precursor salt is of the general formula ('L) (Mo.sub.y W.sub.1-y S.sub.4), wherein y is any value ranging from 0 to 1, wherein L' is the conjugate acid of one or more ligands, L, with a charge sufficient to balance the dinegative charge of the tetrathiometallate anion and wherein ligand L is one or more neutral, nitrogen-containing ligands, at least one of which is a chelating polydentate ligand.
- 13. The catalyst of claim 12 wherein said precursor salt is formed in the presence of a slurry of particles of support material.
- 14. The catalyst of either of claims 12 or 13 wherein ligand L is selected from the group consisting of alkyl amines, aryl amines, nitrogen heterocycles and mixtures thereof.
- 15. A process for preparing a supported hydroprocessing catalyst, said process comprising compositing a quantity of inorganic refractory oxide support material and a hydrated oxide of chromium with one or more precursor salts and heating said composite at elevated temperature of at least about 250.degree. C. to about 600.degree. C., in the presence of hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide for a time sufficient to form sulfide of chromium, wherein said precursor salt is of the general formula ('L) (Mo.sub.y W.sub.1-y S.sub.4), wherein y is any value ranging from 0 to 1, wherein L' is the conjugate acid of one or more ligands, L, with a charge sufficient to balance the dinegative charge of the tetrathiometallate anion and wherein ligand L is one or more neutral, nitrogen-containing ligands, at least one of which is a chelating polydentate ligand.
- 16. The process of claim 15 wherein said precursor salt is formed in the presence of a slurry of particles of support material.
- 17. The process of either of claims 15 or 16 wherein ligand L is selected from the group consisting of alkyl amines, aryl amines, nitrogen heterocycles and mixtures thereof.
