Claims
- 1. A polymer composition having improved resistance to oxidation comprising a polymer susceptible to oxidation and an anti-oxidant effective amount of a composition comprising a non-metallic hydroxy aromatic compound having at least one sulfur atom attached to an aromatic carbocyclic ring and an organic phosphonate compound having the general formula ##STR4## wherein any two or all three of R, R', and R" may be the same or different and may contain further phosphonic moieties and wherein R is independently selected from the group consisting of substituted and unsubstituted alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkylaryl and triazine and wherein R' and R" are independently selected from the group consisting of substituted and unsubstituted alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkylaryl, aralkyl and triazine wherein R' and R" can be linked together to form a ring.
- 2. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylenevinylacetate copolymer, ethylene-acrylic ester copolymers, ethylene-propylene copolymer, ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride and chlorinated polyethylene and mixtures thereof.
- 3. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the polymer is irradiation cross-linked.
- 4. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the sulfur atom containing hydroxy aromatic compound is a compound of the general formula R.sub.1 -S-R.sub.2 wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently selected from the group consisting of substituted and unsubstituted phenols and naphthols.
- 5. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the hydroxy aromatic compound is 4,4'-thiobis(6-t-butyl-m-cresol).
- 6. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the hydroxy aromatic compound is a mixture of oligomers of 4,4'-thiobis (6-t-butyl-m-cresol).
- 7. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the hydroxy aromatic compound is 4,4'-thiobis(6-t-butyl-o-cresol).
- 8. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the hydroxy aromatic compound is 1,1'-thiobis(2-naphthol).
- 9. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the hydroxy aromatic compound is 2,2'-thiobis(4-methyl-6-t-butyl phenol).
- 10. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the hydroxy aromatic compound is the reaction product of phosphorus oxychloride and 4,4'-thiobis(6-t-butyl-m-cresol).
- 11. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the organic phosphonate is an organic ester of 3-t-butyl-4-hydroxy-5-methylbenzylphosphonate.
- 12. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the organic phosphonate is di-n-octadecyl-3-butyl-4-hydroxy-5-methylbenzylphosphonate.
- 13. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the organic phosphonate is a phosphonate ester of the formula ##STR5##
- 14. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the organic phosphonate is a 2,4,6 tris-(dialkyl phosphonato)-1,3,5 triazine.
- 15. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the organic phosphonate is a 2,4,6 tris-(dialkenyl phosphonato)-1,3,5 triazine.
- 16. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the organic phosphonate is 2,4,6 tris-(diallyl phosphonato-1,3,5 triazine.
- 17. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the organic phosphonate is diamylamylphosphonate.
- 18. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the organic phosphonate is diallylallylphosphonate.
- 19. A polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein said non-metallic hydroxy aromatic compound and said organic phosphonate compound are the same compound.
- 20. The polymer composition of claim 4 wherein the polymer is irradiation cross-linked.
- 21. The polymer composition of claim 5 wherein the polymer is irradiation cross-linked.
- 22. The polymer composition of claim 6 wherein the polymer is irradiation cross-linked.
- 23. The polymer composition of claim 7 wherein the polymer is irradiation cross-linked.
- 24. The polymer composition of claim 8 wherein the polymer is irradiation cross-linked.
- 25. The polymer composition of claim 9 wherein the polymer is irradiation cross-linked.
- 26. The polymer composition of claim 10 wherein the polymer is irradiation cross-linked.
- 27. The polymer composition of claim 11 wherein the polymer is irradiation cross-linked.
- 28. The polymer composition of claim 12 wherein the polymer is irradiation cross-linked.
- 29. The polymer composition of claim 13 wherein the polymer is irradiation cross-linked.
- 30. The polymer composition of claim 14 wherein the polymer is irradiation cross-linked.
- 31. The polymer composition of claim 15 wherein the polymer is irradiation cross-linked.
- 32. The polymer composition of claim 16 wherein the polymer is irradiation cross-linked.
- 33. The polymer composition of claim 17 wherein the polymer is irradiation cross-linked.
- 34. The polymer composition of claim 18 wherein the polymer is irradiation cross-linked.
