Claims
- 1. A terpolymer which comprises recurring units of:
- (a) an allyl ester of the formula CH.sub.2 .dbd.CR'--CH.sub.2 --O--CO--R in which R is hydrogen or a saturated linear, branched, or cyclic C.sub.1 -C.sub.30 alkyl, aryl, or aralkyl group, and R' is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl;
- (b) a propoxylated allylic alcohol of the formula
- CH.sub.2 .dbd.CR'--CH.sub.2 --(A).sub.n --OH
- in which A is an oxypropylene group, R' is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl, and n, which is the average number of oxypropylene groups in the propoxylated allylic alcohol, has a value less than or equal to 2; and
- (c) a vinyl monomer selected from the group consisting of vinyl aromatic monomers, vinyl halides, vinyl ethers, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide, methacrylamide, acrylates, methacrylates, and vinyl esters;
- wherein the terpolymer has an average hydroxyl functionality within the range of about 2 to about 10, and a number average molecular weight within the range of about 300 to about 15,000.
- 2. The terpolymer of claim 1 wherein the allyl ester has the formula CH.sub.2 .dbd.CH--CH.sub.2 --O--CO--R in which R is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl group.
- 3. The terpolymer of claim 1 wherein the propoxylated allylic alcohol has the formula CH.sub.2 .dbd.CH--CH.sub.2 --(A).sub.n --OH in which A is an oxypropylene group, and n has a value less than or equal to 2.
- 4. The terpolymer of claim 1 having from about 1 to about 97 wt. % of the allyl ester, from about 2 to about 98 wt. % of the propoxylated allylic alcohol, and from about 1 to about 97 wt. % of the vinyl monomer.
- 5. The terpolymer of claim 1 having a hydroxyl number within the range of about 10 mg KOH/g to about 500 mg KOH/g.
- 6. The terpolymer of claim 1 having a number average molecular weight within the range of about 500 to about 3000, and a hydroxyl number within the range of about 25 mg KOH/g to about 300 mg KOH/g.
