Claims
- 1. A process for the preparation of astaxanthin having the formula ##STR9## comprising the step of oxidizing a compound having the formula ##STR10## wherein Me is selected from the alkalimetals, with a compound having the formula ##STR11## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 independently are phenyl, which may be substituted with halogen, nitro, cyano, C.sub.1-4 -alkyl, or C.sub.1-4 -alkoxy; C.sub.3-7 -cycloalkyl; camphoryl, or another cyclic or bicyclic complex alkyl or alkyl-one.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 comprising the step of oxidizing the compound ##STR12##
- 3. A process for the preparation of astaxanthin comprising the step of oxidizing a canthaxanthin alkali metal dienolate with a compound having the formula ##STR13## wherein R.sup.1 is phenyl, phenyl substituted with a substituent which is stable under the conditions of reaction, C.sub.3-7 -cycloalkyl, camphoryl, or another cyclic or bicyclic radical which is stable under the conditions of reaction, and wherein R.sup.2 independently signifies hydrogen or the same radical as R.sup.1, or wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 together form a cyclic or bicyclic radical.
