Claims
- 1. A hyperfiltration planar membrane for use in a separation process which comprises: a diffusion separation layer supported by a porous, mechanically stable supporting layer, said separation layer consisting essentially of at least one cross-linked monomolecular film formed from a surfactant each molecule of which contains at least one hydrophobic chain and at least one hydrophilic group, said molecules of said surfactant being cross-linked with one another through polymerizable groups in at least one of their hydrophobic chains and or at least one of their hydrophilic groups, and said crosslinked monomolecular film having a crystalline structure in which the hydrophobic chains of the cross-linked molecules thereof are oriented essentially perpendicular to the plane of said membrane and parallel to the direction of diffusion therethrough, whereby a high retention level can be obtained while maintaining a high rate of flux when said membrane is used in a separation process.
- 2. A membrane according to claim 1 in which said separation layer has a thickness of about 20-60 .ANG..
- 3. A membrane according to claim 2 in which said separation layer comprises two or more superimposed monomolecular films.
- 4. A membrane according to claim 2 in which said porous supporting layer is a cellulosic layer of a thickness of about 0.05-1.0 mm.
- 5. A membrane according to claim 1 in which each surfactant molecule comprises a hydrophobic central chain comprising a straight or branched chain aliphatic group, or a mixed aliphatic/aromatic group, or parallel aliphatic or mixed aliphatic aromatic groups.
- 6. A membrane according to claim 5 in which the chains are halogenated or oxygenated.
- 7. A membrane according to claim 1 in which said polymerizable groups of said surfactant are also cross-linked with polymerizable groups of said separation layer.
- 8. A membrane according to claim 1 in which said separation layer is joined to said supporting layer by means of an intermediate layer having a pore diameter smaller than that of said supporting layer.
- 9. A membrane according to claim 8 in which said intermediate and supporting layers are of the same material.
