Claims
- 1. An ice-making machine comprising:a cold element, including an ice-forming surface which may be cooled to below the freezing point of water; a water source which provides water to the ice-forming surface such that a thickness of ice forms on the surface during an ice-making cycle; a temperature sensor; and control logic associated with the sensor for detecting when ice formed on the cold surface is to be harvested, the control logic comprising: a temperature signal threshold value which indicates when the thickness of ice is sufficiently close to the sensor such that it can be harvested; circuitry being operative to sense the temperature signal from the sensor; circuitry for determining that the temperature signal has consistently remained above the threshold value for a threshold persistence time duration since the temperature signal first exceeded the threshold value; and circuitry for initiating a harvesting cycle, during which the ice is removed from the ice-making surface.
- 2. The ice-making machine of claim 1, wherein the control logic further comprises circuitry for determining that, starting from the beginning of the ice-making cycle, a minimum harvest time duration has elapsed, before the harvesting cycle can be initiated.
- 3. The ice-making machine of claim 1, wherein the control logic further comprises circuitry for determining that, starting from the end of the threshold persistence time duration, a harvesting delay time duration has elapsed, before a harvesting cycle can be initiated.
- 4. The ice-making machine of claim 1, wherein the control logic further comprises circuitry for determining that, starting from the end of the harvesting cycle, a recycling delay time duration has elapsed, before another ice-making cycle can be initiated.
- 5. A method of operating an ice-making machine comprising the steps of:a. providing a cold element, including an ice-forming surface which may be cooled to below the freezing point of water; b. providing a water source which can provide water to the ice-forming surface; c. providing a temperature sensor; and d. providing circuitry associated with the sensor for detecting when ice formed on the cold surface is to be harvested, said circuitry being operative to sense the temperature signal from the sensor; e. providing the circuitry with a temperature signal threshold value which indicates when the thickness of ice is sufficiently close to the sensor such that it can be harvested; f. initiating an ice-making cycle, during which the ice-making surface is cooled to below the freezing point of water, and water is provided to the ice-forming surface such that a thickness of ice forms on the surface; g. determining that the temperature signal has consistently remained above the threshold value for a threshold persistence time duration since the temperature signal first exceeded the threshold value; h. initiating a harvesting cycle, during which the ice is removed from the ice-making surface.
- 6. The method of operating an ice-making machine of claim 5, wherein steps (f) through (h) are performed in alphabetical order, and are repeated more than once.
- 7. The method of operating an ice-making machine of claim 5, wherein the temperature sensor is of the thermistor type, and is provided with sufficient current that it self-heats to above the ambient temperature when the ice-making machine is in use.
- 8. The method of operating an ice-making machine of claim 7, further comprising the step of determining that, starting from the beginning of the ice-making cycle, a minimum harvest time duration has elapsed, before a harvesting cycle can be initiated.
- 9. The method of operating an ice-making machine of claim 7, further comprising the step of determining that, starting from the end of the threshold persistence time duration, a harvesting delay time duration has elapsed, before a harvesting cycle can be initiated.
- 10. The method of operating an ice-making machine of claim 7, further comprising the step of determining that, starting from the end of the harvesting cycle, a recycling delay time duration has elapsed, before another ice-making cycle can be initiated.
- 11. The method of operating an ice-making machine of claim 7, wherein steps (f) through (h) are performed in alphabetical order, and are repeated more than once, and further comprising the step of determining that, starting from the beginning of the ice-making cycle, a minimum harvest time duration has elapsed, before a harvesting cycle can be initiated.
- 12. The method of operating an ice-making machine of claim 7, wherein steps (f) through (h) are performed in alphabetical order, and are repeated more than once, and further comprising the steps of:determining that, starting from the beginning of the ice-making cycle, a minimum harvest time duration has elapsed, before a harvesting cycle can be initiated; and determining that, starting from the end of the threshold persistence time duration, a harvesting delay time duration has elapsed, before a harvesting cycle can be initiated.
