Claims
- 1. An ignition coil with integrated coil driver and ionization detection circuitry, comprising:
an ignition coil having a primary winding and a secondary winding; an ignition plug operably connected between a second end of said secondary winding and ground; a coil driver circuit operably connected to said primary winding of said ignition coil and mounted on said ignition coil; and an ionization detection circuit operably connected to said secondary winding of said ignition coil and mounted on said ignition coil.
- 2. The integrated ignition system according to claim 1 further comprising at least one clip operably connected between said ignition coil and said coil driver and operably connected between said ignition coil and said ionization detection circuit, whereby said ignition coil and said coil driver and said ionization detection circuit are attached.
- 3. The integrated ignition system according to claim 1 wherein said ignition coil, said coil driver circuit and said ionization detection circuit are rated at 140° C. and 20G.
- 4. The integrated ignition system according to claim 1 wherein said coil driver circuit and said ionization detection circuit are mounted on top of said ignition coil.
- 5. The integrated ignition system according to claim 1 wherein said coil driver circuit and said ionization detection circuit are mounted on a side of said ignition coil.
- 6. The integrated ignition system according to claim 2 wherein said ionization detection circuit comprises:
a capacitor having a first end operably connected to a first end of a diode, wherein a second end of said diode is operably connected to a second end of said primary winding; and a current mirror having a first terminal operably connected to a first end of said secondary winding and a second terminal operably connected to said first end of said capacitor.
- 7. The integrated ignition system according to claim 2 wherein said ionization detection circuit comprises:
a charge pump having a first end operably connected to a DC voltage; and a current mirror having a first terminal operably connected to a second end of said secondary winding and a second terminal operably connected to said charge pump.
- 8. The integrated ignition system according to claim 2 wherein said coil driver circuit further comprises a switch operably connected between a second end of said primary coil and a first end of a current feedback resistor and wherein a second end of said current feedback resistor is operably connected to ground potential.
- 9. The integrated ignition system according to claim 2 wherein said ignition coil, said coil driver circuit and said ionization detection circuit are rated at 140° C. and 20G.
- 10. The integrated ignition system according to claim 2 wherein said coil driver circuit and said ionization detection circuit are mounted on top of said ignition coil.
- 11. The integrated ignition system according to claim 2 wherein said coil driver circuit and said ionization detection circuit are mounted on a side of said ignition coil.
- 12. The integrated ignition system according to claim 6 wherein said current mirror comprises a pair of matched transistors.
- 13. The integrated ignition system according to claim 6 wherein said ionization detection circuit further comprises a switch having at least two inputs and an output, wherein a first input is operably connected to a third terminal of said current mirror, and a second input is operably connected to said end of said primary winding, whereby said output of said switch is multiplexed between an ionization signal and a charge current feedback signal.
- 14. The integrated ignition system according to claim 7 wherein said charge pump comprises a driver chip comprising an input pin operably connected to a DC voltage and an output pin operably connected to said second terminal of said current mirror.
- 15. The integrated ignition system according to claim 13 further comprising an amplifier having an input and an output, wherein said input is operably connected to said output of said switch.
- 16. The integrated ignition system according to claim 15 wherein said integrated ignition system further comprises:
a charge gate input pin operably connected to a command input of said coil driver circuit; a ground pin; a battery power supply pin operably connected to a first end of said primary coil; and an output pin operably connected to said output of said amplifier.
- 17. The integrated ignition system according to claim 15 wherein said coil driver circuit further comprises a switch operably connected between a second end of said primary coil and ground potential;
wherein said ignition coil, said coil driver and said ionization detection circuit are rated at 140° C. and 20 G; and wherein said coil driver circuit and said ionization detection circuit are mounted on top of said ignition coil.
- 18. The integrated ignition system according to claim 15 wherein said coil driver circuit further comprises a switch operably connected between a second end of said primary coil and ground potential;
wherein said ignition coil, said coil driver circuit and said ionization detection are rated at 140° C. and 20 G; and wherein said coil driver circuit and said ionization detection circuit are mounted on a side of said ignition coil.
- 19. The integrated ignition system according to claim 16 wherein said coil driver circuit further comprises a switch operably connected between a second end of said primary coil and ground potential;
wherein said ignition coil, said coil driver circuit and said ionization detection circuit are rated at 140° C. and 20 G; and wherein said coil driver circuit and said ionization detection circuit are mounted on top of said ignition coil.
- 20. The integrated ignition system according to claim 16 wherein said coil driver circuit further comprises a switch operably connected between a second end of said primary coil and ground potential;
wherein said ignition coil, said coil driver circuit and said ionization detection circuit are rated at 140° C. and 20 G; and wherein said coil driver circuit and said ionization detection circuit are mounted on a side of said ignition coil.
