Claims
- 1. A carbonaceous material comprising a multiplicity of carbonaceous fibers, said carbonaceous fibers having a multiplicity of contact points and are integrally welded at their contact points to form an interconnected carbonaceous material, said carbonaceous material having a carbon content of from about 65% to less than about 92%, an oxygen content of less than about 2%, and a specific resistivity of from about 10.sup.-1 to about 10.sup.10 ohm-cm, "wherein said carbonaceous material is derived from meltblown or spunbonded polyacrylonitrile precursor microfibers."
- 2. The material of claim 1, in the form of a generally planar fibrous web, batt or board.
- 3. The material of claim 1, wherein said carbonaceous material has an oxygen content of less than about 1% and a nitrogen content of from about 5% to about 30%.
- 4. The material of claim 1, coated with a metal or ceramic material.
- 5. The material of claim 1, coated with a conformal silicone compound.
- 6. The material of claim 1, wherein said polyacrylonitrile precursor fibers are selected from one or more of the following: acrylonitrile based homopolymers, copolymers and terpolymers, wherein the copolymers contain at least about 85 mole percent of acrylonitrile units and up to 15 mole percent of one or more monovinyl units.
- 7. The material of claim 1, wherein the carbonaceous fibers are meltblown microfibers and have a diameter of less than 10 microns.
- 8. The material of claim 1, wherein said carbonaceous fibrous material is blended or plied with from about 50 to 90% by weight of other non-carbonaceous polymeric or natural fibers to produce a fire blocking insulation.
- 9. The material of claim 1, wherein said carbonaceous fibrous material is blended or plied with from about 80 to 93% by weight of other non-carbonaceous polymeric or natural fibers to produce a nonflammable insulation.
