Claims
- 1. An image coding method for coding each block of a digital image divided into two-dimensional blocks, each block having a plurality of pixels, the method comprising:determining a coding mode for a target block to output mode information of the target block; selecting a codeword table from a plurality of codeword tables based on a plurality of the mode information of previously coded blocks at a periphery of the target block, the tables respectively corresponding to combinations of the mode information of the previously coded blocks at the periphery of the target block, and having codewords respectively corresponding to coding modes available for the target block, a codeword assigned a shorter codeword length when the coding mode for the target block is numerically predominant among the coding modes for the blocks at the periphery of the target block than when the coding mode for the target block is numerically inferior among the coding modes for the blocks at the periphery of the target block; coding the mode information for the target block using the selected codeword table; and coding pixel data in the target block according to the mode information of the target block.
- 2. An image coding apparatus for coding each block of a digital image divided into two-dimensional blocks each having a plurality of pixels, said apparatus comprising:a mode information determining section that is configured to determine a coding mode for a target block to output mode information of the target block; a selecting section that is configured to select a codeword table from a plurality of codeword tables based on a plurality of mode information of previously coded blocks at a periphery of the target block, said tables respectively corresponding to combinations of mode information of the previously coded blocks at the periphery of the target block, and having codewords respectively corresponding to coding modes available for the target block, a codeword being assigned a shorter codeword length when the coding mode for the target block is numerically predominant among the coding modes for the blocks at the periphery of the target block than when the coding mode for the target block is numerically inferior among the coding modes for the blocks at the periphery of the target block; a mode information coding section that is configured to code the mode information for the target block using the codeword table selected in said selecting section; and a block data coding section that is configured to code pixel data in the target block according to the mode information of the target block.
- 3. A computer-readable recording medium with an image coding program stored therein, said program being executed by a computer to code each block of a digital image divided into two-dimensional blocks each having a plurality of pixels, said program comprising:determining a coding mode for a target block to output mode information of the target block; selecting a codeword table from a plurality of codeword tables based on a plurality of mode information of previously coded blocks at a periphery of the target block, the tables respectively corresponding to combinations of the mode information of the previously coded blocks at the periphery of the target block, and having codewords respectively corresponding to coding modes available for the target block, a codeword being assigned a shorter codeword length when the coding mode for the target block is numerically predominant among the coding modes for the blocks at the periphery of the target block than when the coding mode for the target block is numerically inferior among the coding modes for the blocks at the periphery of the target block; coding the mode information for the target block using the selected codeword table; and coding pixel data in the target block according to the mode information of the target block.
