Claims
- 1. A method of displaying an image having a first aspect ratio with a display device having a second aspect ratio, the method comprising:
receiving image data for the image; buffering the image data and creating a frame of the image at the first aspect ratio; defining a first sub-frame and a second sub-frame for the frame of the image at the second aspect ratio, including spatially offsetting the second sub-frame from the first sub-frame in one direction; and alternating between displaying the first sub-frame in a first position and the second sub-frame in a second position spatially offset from the first position with the display device, including optically scaling a displayed image of the first sub-frame and a displayed image of the second sub-frame in the one direction.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the image data includes individual pixels of the image, wherein the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame each include a plurality of the pixels of the image, and wherein alternating between displaying the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame includes overlapping pixels of the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame in the one direction.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein alternating between displaying the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame includes displaying the image and effectively increasing a resolution of the image in the one direction.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein optically scaling the displayed image of the first sub-frame and the displayed image of the second sub-frame includes stretching the displayed image of the first sub-frame and the displayed image of the second sub-frame in the one direction.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the first aspect ratio and the second aspect ratio differ in a horizontal dimension, and wherein optically scaling the displayed image of the first sub-frame and the displayed image of the second sub-frame includes optically scaling the displayed image of the first sub-frame and the displayed image of the second sub-frame in the horizontal dimension.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein optically scaling the displayed image of the first sub-frame and the displayed image of the second sub-frame includes optically scaling the displayed image of the first sub-frame and the displayed image of the second sub-frame in the one direction by a ratio of the first aspect ratio and the second aspect ratio.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein optically scaling the displayed image of the first sub-frame and the displayed image of the second sub-frame includes optically scaling the displayed image of the first sub-frame and the displayed image of the second sub-frame with an anamorphic lens.
- 8. The method of claim 1, wherein spatially offsetting the second sub-frame from the first sub-frame includes offsetting the second sub-frame from the first sub-frame by one of a horizontal distance and a vertical distance, wherein alternating between displaying the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame includes shifting display of the second sub-frame from display of the first sub-frame by the one of the horizontal distance and the vertical distance.
- 9. The method of claim 8, wherein the horizontal distance and the vertical distance each include approximately one-half of one pixel.
- 10. The method of claim 1, wherein defining the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame includes adjusting a resolution of the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame to a resolution of the display device.
- 11. The method of claim 10, wherein the first aspect ratio of the image data is greater than the second aspect ratio of the display device, and wherein adjusting the resolution of the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame includes decreasing the resolution of the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame.
- 12. The method of claim 10, wherein the first aspect ratio of the image data is less than the second aspect ratio of the display device, and wherein adjusting the resolution of the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame includes increasing the resolution of the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame.
- 13. A system for displaying an image having a first aspect ratio, the system comprising:
a buffer adapted to receive image data for the image and buffer the image data to create a frame of the image at the first aspect ratio; an image processing unit adapted to define a first sub-frame and a second sub-frame for the frame of the image at a second aspect ratio, the second sub-frame being spatially offset from the first sub-frame in one direction; and a display device having the second aspect ratio and adapted to alternately display the first sub-frame in a first position and the second sub-frame in a second position spatially offset from the first position, wherein the display device is adapted to optically scale a displayed image of the first sub-frame and a displayed image of the second sub-frame in the one direction.
- 14. The system of claim 13, wherein the image data includes individual pixels of the image, wherein the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame each include a plurality of the pixels of the image, and wherein the display device is adapted to overlap pixels of the first sub-frame and pixels of the second sub-frame in the one direction.
- 15. The system of claim 13, wherein the display device is adapted to display the image and effectively increase a resolution of the image in the one direction.
- 16. The system of claim 13, wherein the display device is adapted to stretch the displayed image of the first sub-frame and the displayed image of the second sub-frame in the one direction.
- 17. The system of claim 13, wherein the first aspect ratio and the second aspect ratio differ in a horizontal dimension, and wherein the display device is adapted to optically scale the displayed image of the first sub-frame and the displayed image of the second sub-frame in the horizontal dimension.
- 18. The system of claim 13, wherein the display device is adapted to optically scale the displayed image of the first sub-frame and the displayed image of the second sub-frame in the one direction by a ratio of the first aspect ratio and the second aspect ratio.
- 19. The system of claim 13, wherein the display device includes an optical element, wherein the optical element is adapted to optically scale the displayed image of the first sub-frame and the displayed image of the second sub-frame in the one direction.
- 20. The system of claim 19, wherein the optical element includes an anamorphic lens.
- 21. The system of claim 13, wherein the second sub-frame is offset one of a horizontal distance and a vertical distance from the first sub-frame, and wherein the display device is adapted to shift display of the second sub-frame from display of the first sub-frame by the one of the horizontal distance and the vertical distance.
- 22. The system of claim 21, wherein the horizontal distance and the vertical distance each include approximately one-half of one pixel.
- 23. The system of claim 13, wherein the image processing unit is adapted to adjust a resolution of the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame to a resolution of the display device.
- 24. The system of claim 23, wherein the first aspect ratio of the image is greater than the second aspect ratio of the display device, and wherein the image processing unit is adapted to decrease the resolution of the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame.
- 25. The system of claim 23, wherein the first aspect ratio of the image data is less than the second aspect ratio of the display device, and wherein the image processing unit is adapted to increase the resolution of the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame.
- 26. A system for displaying an image having a first aspect ratio, the system comprising:
means for receiving image data for the image and creating a frame of the image at the first aspect ratio; means for defining a first sub-frame and a second sub-frame for the frame of the image at a second aspect ratio, the second sub-frame being spatially offset from the first sub-frame in one direction; means for sequentially displaying the first sub-frame in a first position and the second sub-frame in a second position spatially offset from the first position; and means for optically scaling a displayed image of the first sub-frame and a displayed image of the second sub-frame in the one direction.
- 27. The system of claim 26, wherein the image data includes individual pixels of the image, and wherein means for sequentially displaying the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame includes means for overlapping pixels of the first sub-frame and pixels of the second sub-frame in the one direction.
- 28. The system of claim 26, wherein means for sequentially displaying the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame includes means for effectively increasing a resolution of the image in the one direction.
- 29. The system of claim 26, wherein means for optically scaling the displayed image of the first sub-frame and the displayed image of the second sub-frame includes means for stretching the displayed image of the first sub-frame and the displayed image of the second sub-frame in the one direction.
- 30. The system of claim 26, wherein the first aspect ratio and the second aspect ratio differ in a horizontal dimension, and wherein means for optically scaling the displayed image of the first sub-frame and the displayed image of the second sub-frame includes means for optically scaling the displayed image of the first sub-frame and the displayed image of the second sub-frame in the horizontal dimension.
- 31. The system of claim 26, wherein means for optically scaling the displayed image of the first sub-frame and the displayed image of the second sub-frame includes means for optically scaling the displayed image of the first sub-frame and the displayed image of the second sub-frame in the one direction by a ratio of the first aspect ratio and the second aspect ratio.
- 32. A method of displaying an image having a first aspect ratio with a display device having a second aspect ratio, the method comprising:
receiving image data for a frame of the image; displaying a displayed image for the frame of the image with the display device, including increasing a resolution of the displayed image in one direction; and optically scaling the displayed image in the one direction.
- 33. The method of claim 32, wherein receiving the image data includes defining a first sub-frame and a second sub-frame spatially offset from the first sub-frame in the one direction for the frame of the image, and wherein displaying the displayed image includes alternating between displaying the first sub-frame in a first position and the second sub-frame in a second position spatially offset from the first position.
- 34. The method of claim 33, wherein receiving the image data further includes buffering the image data and creating the frame of the image at the first aspect ratio, and wherein defining the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame for the frame of the image includes defining the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame at the second aspect ratio.
- 35. The method of claim 33, wherein alternating between displaying the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame includes overlapping pixels of the first sub-frame and pixels of the second sub-frame in the one direction to increase the resolution of the displayed image in the one direction.
- 36. The method of claim 32, wherein optically scaling the displayed image includes optically scaling the displayed image by a ratio of the first aspect ratio and the second aspect ratio.
- 37. A system for displaying an image having a first aspect ratio, the system comprising:
an image processing unit adapted to receive a frame of the image; and a display device having a second aspect ratio and adapted to produce a displayed image for the frame of the image, wherein the display device is adapted to increase a resolution of the displayed image in one direction and optically scale the displayed image in the one direction.
- 38. The system of claim 37, wherein the image processing unit is adapted to define a first sub-frame and a second sub-frame spatially offset from the first sub-frame in the one direction for the frame of the image, and wherein the display device is adapted to alternately display the first sub-frame in a first position and the second sub-frame in a second position spatially offset from the first position.
- 39. The system of claim 38, further comprising:
a buffer adapted to receive the image data and buffer the image data to create the frame of the image at the first aspect ratio, and wherein the image processing unit is adapted to define the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame at the second aspect ratio.
- 40. The system of claim 38, wherein the display device is adapted to overlap pixels of the first sub-frame and pixels of the second sub-frame in the one direction to increase the resolution of the displayed image in the one direction.
- 41. The system of claim 37, wherein the display device is adapted to optically scale the displayed image by a ratio of the first aspect ratio and the second aspect ratio.
