Claims
- 1. An image engine, comprising:a first image source having a first response time for color operation at a first color depth, the first response time being greater than operation of the first image source at a second color depth; a second image source having a third response time for color operation at the first color depth, the third response time being greater than operation of the second image source at the second color depth; a color filter configured to direct first colored light to the first image source and to direct second colored light to the second image source; and an electro-optic color switch configured to alternately allow components of the second colored light to be directed to the second image source.
- 2. The image engine of claim 1, wherein the first colored light comprises red and the second colored light comprises green and blue.
- 3. The image engine of claim 1, wherein the first colored light and the second colored light comprise red, green and blue light.
- 4. The image engine of claim 1, wherein the electro-optic color switch is adapted to filter the second colored light.
- 5. The image engine of claim 1, wherein the electro-optic color switch is adapted to alternate between components of the second colored light under control of a controller device.
- 6. The image engine of claim 1, wherein the electro-optic color switch comprises an electro-optic shutter.
- 7. The image engine of claim 1, wherein the electro-optic color switch comprises alternating dichroic reflectors.
- 8. The image engine of claim 1, wherein the electro-optic color switch is disposed between the color filter and the second image source.
- 9. The image engine of claim 1, wherein the color filter is disposed between the electro-optic color switch and both the first and second image sources.
- 10. The image engine of claim 1, wherein the first and second image sources comprise first and second liquid crystal displays.
- 11. The image engine of claim 1, wherein the first and second image sources comprise first and second ferroelectric liquid crystal displays.
- 12. The image engine of claim 1, wherein the operation of the first and second image sources at the second color depth comprises three color operation.
- 13. The image engine of claim 1, wherein the first color depth comprises 6-bit color depth and the second color depth comprises 8-bit color depth.
- 14. The image engine of claim 1, wherein the second color depth comprises a greater color depth than the first color depth.
- 15. The image engine of claim 1, wherein the first and second image sources comprise first and second pixel arrays, respectively.
- 16. The image engine of claim 1, wherein the first and second image sources, the color filter, and the electro-optic color switch are comprised in part of a field sequential color system.
