Claims
- 1. An image forming apparatus comprising:
- conveying means comprising a paper feed roller for conveying a recording medium toward a recording position;
- a press roller, opposing said paper feed roller, for pressing the recording medium against said paper feed roller;
- a pivoting support mechanism for detachably supporting said press roller against said paper feed roller; and
- return means for forcibly pivoting said support mechanism and returning said press roller from a position at which said press roller is detached from said paper feed roller while said conveying means is in a recording position to a position at which said press roller presses against said paper feed roller.
- 2. An image forming apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising:
- a recording had assembly having at least one ink jet recording head; and
- a cap for covering said recording head assembly, said cap being movable with respect to said support mechanism to actuate said return means to perform the return operation.
- 3. An image forming apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said cap is rotatably supported.
- 4. An image forming apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said cap comprises an absorbing member for absorbing ink discharged from one of said ink jet recording heads.
- 5. An image forming apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said recording head assembly is moved by a pulse motor.
- 6. An image forming apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said cap moves in a direction parallel to a recording area, where a plurality of said recording heads in said recording head assembly print on a moving recording medium in a fixed state, said cap covers said recording heads during non-recording and said cap is held at a waiting position apart from said recording area during recording.
- 7. An image forming apparatus according to claim 6, further comprising a cap shield for shielding said cap when said cap is held at the waiting position.
- 8. An image forming apparatus according to claim 6, wherein said recording head assembly is spaced from the recording area in a vertical direction and said cap covers said recording head assembly between said recording head assembly and the recording area after said recording head assembly moves to the recording area.
