Claims
- 1. An image forming apparatus for executing image formation based on an instruction for image formation from an image signal generating device, said apparatus comprising:detection means for detecting a state of a sheet; preparation means for preparing sheet state information indicating the states of a plurality of sheets, based on a detection by said detection means , wherein each of the plurality of sheets is specified by identification information; and output means for outputting the sheet state information, prepared by said preparation means, to said image signal generating device, wherein the sheet state information comprises data including plural bits, each bit corresponding to the sheet specified by the identification information and representing whether the corresponding sheet is in a predetermined state or not.
- 2. An image forming apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said output means is adapted to output the sheet state information in response to a request from said image signal generating device.
- 3. An image forming apparatus according to claim 1, wherein, in data of the sheet state information, a bit is set to a value that indicates that the corresponding sheet is in the predetermined state when the identification information is issued to the sheet and is set to a value that indicates that the corresponding sheet is not in the predetermined state when the corresponding sheet is discharged.
- 4. An image forming apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a two-face unit for forming images on both faces of the sheet, wherein same identification information is set for the image formations on respective faces of the sheet.
- 5. An image forming apparatus according to claim 4, wherein, in the data of the sheet state information, each bit is set to a value that indicates that the corresponding sheet is in the predetermined state when the two-face unit is designated as a destination of sheet discharge and is set to a value that indicates that the corresponding sheet is not in the predetermined state when sheet feeding from said two-face unit is designated for the same identification information.
- 6. An image forming apparatus according to claim 1, wherein, in the data of the sheet state information, each bit is set to a value that indicates that the corresponding sheet is in the predetermined state when image formation to the sheet is started and is set to a value that indicates that the corresponding sheet is not in the predetermined state when the sheet is discharged.
- 7. An image forming apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the sheet state information comprises a plurality of data including plural bits, each bit corresponding to each block of sheet feed paths and each of the plurality of data corresponding to the sheet specified by the identification information.
- 8. An image forming apparatus according to claim 7, wherein, in each of the plurality of data, a bit corresponding to a block indicates that the sheet corresponding to the data is present in the corresponding block or not.
- 9. An image forming apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the sheet state information comprises a plurality of data including plural bits, each bit corresponding to the sheet specified by the identification information and each of the plurality of data corresponding to a respective block of sheet feed paths.
- 10. An image forming apparatus according to claim 9, wherein, in each of the plurality of data, a bit corresponding to the sheet indicates that the corresponding sheet is present in the block corresponding to the data or not.
- 11. An image forming apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said preparation means is adapted, in case of a sheet jam, to retain the sheet state information until an instruction for clearing the sheet state information is received from said image signal generating device.
- 12. An image forming apparatus according to claim 3, wherein, when a sheet jam has occurred, said image signal generating device is adapted to determine a page, the image signal of which is to be re-sent to said image forming apparatus, based on the sheet state information.
- 13. A control method for controlling an image forming apparatus for executing image formation by an image signal generating device, said method comprising steps of:outputting identification information for specifying a sheet to the image forming apparatus; requesting sheet state information to the image forming apparatus; and receiving sheet state information indicating states of a plurality of sheets, each of the plurality of sheets being specified by the identification information, wherein the sheet state information comprises data including plural bits, each bit corresponding to the sheet specified by the identification information and representing whether the corresponding sheet is in a predetermined state or not.
- 14. A control method according to claim 13, wherein, in said output step, the identification information is output along with a sheet feed instruction.
- 15. A control method according to claim 13, wherein, in the data of the sheet state information, the bit is set to a value that indicates that the corresponding sheet is in the predetermined state when the identification information is issued to the sheet and is set to a value that indicates that the corresponding sheet is not in the predetermined state when the corresponding sheet is discharged.
- 16. A control method according to claim 13, wherein the image forming apparatus includes a two-face recording unit for forming images on both faces of the sheet, wherein in said outputting step, same identification information is outputted for image formations on respective faces of the sheet.
- 17. A control method according to claim 16, wherein, in the data of the sheet state information, each bit is set to a value that indicates that the corresponding sheet is in the predetermined state when the two-face unit is designated as a destination of sheet discharge and is set to a value that indicates that the corresponding sheet is not in the predetermined state when sheet feeding from the two-face unit is designated for the same identification information.
- 18. A control method according to claim 13, wherein, in the data of the sheet state information, each bit is set to a value that indicates that the corresponding sheet is in the predetermined state when image formation to the sheet is started and is set to a value that indicates that the corresponding sheet is not in the predetermined state when the sheet is discharged.
- 19. A control method according to claim 13, wherein the sheet state information comprises a plurality of data including plural bits, each bit corresponding to each block of sheet feed paths and each of the plurality of the data corresponding to the sheet specified by the identification information.
- 20. A control method according to claim 13, wherein, in each of the plurality of the data, a bit corresponding to a block indicates that the sheet corresponding to the data is present in the corresponding block or not.
- 21. A control method according to claim 13, wherein the sheet state information comprises a plurality of data including plural bits, each bit corresponding to the sheet specified by the identification information and each of the plurality of data corresponding to each block of sheet feed paths.
- 22. A control method according to claim 21, wherein, in each of the plurality of the data, a bit corresponding to the sheet indicates that the corresponding sheet is present in the block corresponding to the data or not.
- 23. A control method according to claim 13, wherein, when a sheet jam has occurred, the image signal generating device is adapted to determine a page, the image signal of which is to be resent to the image forming apparatus, based on the sheet state information.
- 24. An image forming apparatus for executing image formation based on an instruction for image formation from an image signal generating device, said apparatus comprising:storage means capable of storing a plurality of sheets; sheet feed means for feeding a sheet stored in said storage means; image forming means for forming an image on the sheet fed by said sheet feed means; and control means adapted, upon receiving an instruction along with identification information for permitting a sheet to be used in the next image formation to be fed to a predetermined position, to discriminate whether it is time for the sheet corresponding to the identification information to be fed by said sheet feed means or not, and to cause said sheet feed means to execute sheet feeding based on the discrimination.
- 25. An image forming apparatus according to claim 24, wherein said control means does not discriminate that it is time for the sheet corresponding to the identification information to be fed by said sheet feed means until a predetermined time interval obtained from a preceding sheet is established, in a case where the instruction along with identification information for permitting the sheet to be used in the next image formation to be fed to a predetermined position is received.
- 26. An image forming apparatus according to claim 25, wherein said control means does not discriminate that it is time for the sheet corresponding to the identification information to be fed by said sheet feed means when a driving source of said sheet feed means is not yet turned on, in a case where the instruction along with identification information for permitting the sheet to be used in the next image formation to be fed to a predetermined position is received.
- 27. An image forming apparatus according to claim 25, further comprising plural sheet feed ports,wherein, in regard to each identification information, a sheet feed port to which the sheet corresponding to the identification information should be fed is designated.
- 28. An image forming apparatus according to claim 24, further comprising plural sheet discharge units,wherein, in regard to each identification information, a sheet discharge unit to which the sheet corresponding to the identification information should be discharged is designated.
- 29. An image forming apparatus according to claim 24, wherein a size of the sheet corresponding to the identification information is designated in regard to each identification information.
- 30. An image forming apparatus according to claim 24, further comprising plural sheet feed ports,wherein the predetermined position is the position at the upstream side of a confluence of a path from the designated sheet feed port and a path from other sheet feed ports.
- 31. An image forming apparatus according to claim 24, wherein a preparation operation to change said image forming means into an image formable state is started when said image forming means is not in the image formable state, in a case where the instruction along with identification information for permitting a sheet to be used in the next image formation to be fed to a predetermined position is received.
- 32. A control method for controlling an image forming apparatus by an image signal generating device, said method comprising the steps of:outputting a first instruction along with identification information for permitting a sheet to be used in the next image formation to be fed to a predetermined position, the image forming apparatus discriminating whether it is time for the sheet corresponding to the identification information to be fed or not, and causing to feed the sheet based on the discriminating; and outputting a second instruction for image formation for the sheet corresponding to the identification information, after the first instruction.
- 33. A control method according to claim 32, further comprising a designation step, of, in regard to each identification information, designating a condition for the sheet corresponding to the identification information.
- 34. A control method according to claim 33, wherein the condition for the sheet includes at least one of a sheet feed port to which the sheet should be fed, a sheet discharge port to which the sheet should be discharged, and the sheet size.
- 35. A control method according to claim 33, further comprising an instruction step, of, after the condition for the sheet was designated, instructing to change the designated condition.
- 36. A control method according to claim 32, further comprising a cancel step, of, after a first instruction was outputted, cancelling the outputted first instruction.
- 37. An image forming apparatus for executing image formation based on an instruction for image formation from an image signal generating device, said apparatus comprising:a detector adapted to detect a state of a sheet; a preparation unit, adapted to prepare sheet state information indicating the states of a plurality of sheets, based on a detection by said detector, wherein each of the plurality of sheets is specified by identification information; and an output unit, adapted to output the sheet state information, prepared by said preparation unit, to the image signal generating device, wherein the sheet state information comprises data including plural bits, each bit corresponding to the sheet specified by the identification information and representing whether the corresponding sheet is in a predetermined state or not.
- 38. An image forming apparatus according to claim 37, wherein said output unit is adapted to output the sheet state information in response to a request from the image signal generating device.
- 39. An image forming apparatus according to claim 37, wherein, in data of the sheet state information, a bit is set to a value that indicates that the corresponding sheet is in the predetermined state when the identification information is issued to the sheet and is set to a value that indicates that the corresponding sheet is not in the predetermined state when the corresponding sheet is discharged.
- 40. An image forming apparatus according to claim 37, further comprising a two-face unit adapted to form images on both faces of the sheet, wherein same identification information is set for the image formations on respective faces of the sheet.
- 41. An image forming apparatus according to claim 40, wherein, in the data of the sheet state information, each bit is set to a value that indicates that the corresponding sheet is in the predetermined state when the two-face unit is designated as a destination of sheet discharge and is set to a value that indicates that the corresponding sheet is not in the predetermined state when sheet feeding from said two-face unit is designated for the same identification information.
- 42. An image forming apparatus according to claim 37, wherein, in the data of the sheet state information, each bit is set to a value that indicates that the corresponding sheet is in the predetermined state when image formation to the sheet is started and is set to a value that indicates that the corresponding sheet is not in the predetermined state when the sheet is discharged.
- 43. An image forming apparatus according to claim 37, wherein the sheet state information comprises a plurality of data including plural bits, each bit corresponding to each block of sheet feed paths and each of the plurality of data corresponding to the sheet specified by the identification information.
- 44. An image forming apparatus according to claim 33, wherein, in each of the plurality of data, a bit corresponding to a block indicates that the sheet corresponding to the data is present in the corresponding block or not.
- 45. An image forming apparatus according to claim 37, wherein the sheet state information comprises a plurality of data including plural bits, each bit corresponding to the sheet specified by the identification information and each of the plurality of data corresponding to a respective block of sheet feed paths.
- 46. An image forming apparatus according to claim 35, wherein, in each of the plurality of data, a bit corresponding to the sheet indicates that the corresponding sheet is present in the block corresponding to the data or not.
- 47. An image forming apparatus according to claim 37, wherein said preparation unit is adapted, in case of a sheet jam, to retain the sheet state information until an instruction for clearing the sheet state information is received from the image signal generating device.
- 48. An image forming apparatus according to claim 39, wherein, when a sheet jam has occurred, the image signal generating device is adapted to determine a page, the image signal of which is to be re-sent to said image forming apparatus, based on the sheet state information.
- 49. An image forming apparatus for executing image formation based on an instruction for image formation from an image signal generating device, said apparatus comprising:storage arranged to and capable of storing a plurality of sheets; a sheet feed unit, adapted to feed a sheet stored in said storage; an image forming unit, adapted to form an image on the sheet fed by said sheet feed unit; and a controller, adapted, upon receiving an instruction along with identification information for permitting a sheet to be used in the next image formation to be fed to a predetermined position, to discriminate whether it is time for the sheet corresponding to the identification information to be fed by said sheet feed unit or not, and to cause said sheet feed unit to execute sheet feeding based on the discrimination.
- 50. An image forming apparatus according to claim 49, wherein said controller does not discriminate that it is time for the sheet corresponding to the identification information to be fed by said sheet feed unit until a predetermined time interval obtained from a preceding sheet is established, in a case where the instruction along with identification information for permitting the sheet to be used in the next image formation to be fed to a predetermined position is received.
- 51. An image forming apparatus according to claim 50, wherein said controller does not discriminate that it is time for the sheet corresponding to the identification information to be fed by said sheet feed unit when a driving source of said sheet feed unit is not yet turned on, in a case where the instruction along with identification information for permitting the sheet to be used in the next image formation to be fed to a predetermined position is received.
- 52. An image forming apparatus according to claim 49, further comprising plural sheet feed ports,wherein, in regard to each identification information, a sheet feed port to which the sheet corresponding to the identification information should be fed is designated.
- 53. An image forming apparatus according to claim 49, further comprising plural sheet discharge units,wherein, in regard to each identification information, a sheet discharge unit to which the sheet corresponding to the identification information should be discharged is designated.
- 54. An image forming apparatus according to claim 49, wherein a size of the sheet corresponding to the identification information is designated in regard to each identification information.
- 55. An image forming apparatus according to claim 49, further comprising plural sheet feed ports,wherein the predetermined position is the position at the upstream side of a confluence of a path from the designated sheet feed port and a path from other sheet feed ports.
- 56. An image forming apparatus according to claim 49, wherein a preparation operation to change said image forming unit into an image formable state is started when said image forming unit is not in the image formable state, in a case where the instruction along with identification information for permitting a sheet to be used in the next image formation to be fed to a predetermined position is received.
