The receiver 84 is designed so as to communicate with the first memory 80 when the photoreceptor unit 38 is attached to the image forming apparatus main body 12 and the second memory 82 when the relevant toner cartridge 50 is attached to the image forming apparatus main body 12.

The functional structure of the controller 36 is shown in FIG. 3.

As shown in FIG. 3, the controller 36 is connected to the receiver 84, a memory 86, a counter 88, the UI 69, and the drive motor 67. Further, the receiver 84 is connected to the first memory 80 and the second memory 82.

The receiver 84 is designed so as to transmit the contents of communications between the receiver 84 and the first memory 80 to the controller 36, or the contents of communications between the receiver 84 and the second memory 82 to the controller 36. The memory 86 stores data output from the receiver 84, the counter 88, and the UI 69 into the controller 36. The counter 88 (shown also in FIG. 1) is disposed on the image forming apparatus main body 12 and designed so as to count the number of printed sheets with an optical sensor or the like. The controller 36 is designed so as to control the displayed contents on the display 69a of the UI 69 and the operation of the drive motor 67 on the basis of the output signals output from the receiver 84, the memory 86, the counter 88, the UI 69, and others.

Print mode selection processing S10 carried out with the controller 36 according to the present exemplary embodiment is shown in FIG. 4.

At Step S100, the controller 36 judges whether or not a toner cartridge 50 is attached to the image forming apparatus main body 12. That is, the controller 36 judges whether or not the second memory 82 disposed on the toner cartridge 50 and the receiver 84 are in a communicable state, and the process goes to the processing of Step S105 when the controller 36 judges that the toner cartridge 50 is attached to the image forming apparatus main body 12, and to the processing of Step S110 when the controller 36 judges that the toner cartridge 50 is not attached to the image forming apparatus main body 12.

At Step S105, the controller 36 makes the memory 86 store the history of the attachment of the toner cartridge 50 to the image forming apparatus main body 12.

At Step S110, the controller 36 judges the existence or nonexistence of the history of the attachment of the toner cartridge 50 to the image forming apparatus main body 12. That is, the controller 36 judges whether or not the history of the attachment of the toner cartridge 50 to the image forming apparatus main body 12 is stored in the memory 86, and the process goes to the processing of Step S115 when the controller 36 judges that the history of the attachment of the toner cartridge 50 to the image forming apparatus main body 12 exists, and to the processing of Step S120 when the controller 36 judges that the history of the attachment of the toner cartridge 50 to the image forming apparatus main body 12 does not exist.

At Step S115, the controller 36 instructs to attach a toner cartridge on the display 69a of the UI 69 and the process goes back to the processing of Step S100.

At Step S120, the controller 36 judges the amount of the remaining initial toner in the toner supply section 38a and the toner supply mechanism 62 of a development device 44. That is, the controller 36 judges the amount of the remaining initial toner in the toner supply section 38a and the toner supply mechanism 62 of a development device 44 on the basis of the output signals output from the counter 88, and the process goes to the processing of Step 125 when the controller 36 judges that the initial toner exists, and to the processing of Step S115 when the controller 36 judges that the initial toner does not exist. Here, it is also possible to judge the amount of the remaining initial toner using a value detected with a concentration detecting sensor (not shown in the figure), a toner remaining amount detecting sensor (not shown in the figure) in a development device 44, or the like.

At Step S125, the controller 36 activates the drive motor 67 and carries out printing with the initial toner contained in the toner supply section 38a or the toner supply mechanism 62 of a development device 44 (the first print mode). At the time, the waste toner removed from the surface of the photoreceptor 40 is contained in the waste toner container 38b.

At Step S130, the controller 36 activates the drive motor 67 and carries out printing with the toner in the toner container 52 of the toner cartridge 50 (the second print mode). At the time, the waste toner removed from the surface of the photoreceptor 40 is temporarily contained in the waste toner container 38b and conveyed to the toner recovery unit 54 of the toner cartridge 50 through the waste toner augers 78a and 78b. Here, the waste toner contained in the waste toner container 38b at the time of the aforementioned first print mode (Step S125) is conveyed to the toner recovery unit 54 of the toner cartridge 50 when the toner cartridge 50 is attached.

As explained above, the controller 36 controls printing by switching between the first print mode wherein printing is carried out in the state where the toner cartridge 50 is not attached to the image forming apparatus main body 12 and the second print mode wherein printing is carried out in the state where the toner cartridge 50 is attached to the image forming apparatus main body 12. As a result, in the case of the first print mode, since printing is carried out with the initial toner contained in the toner supply section 38a or the toner supply mechanism 62 of a development device 44, it is possible to print a prescribed number of copies even when the toner cartridge 50 is not attached to the image forming apparatus main body 12. By so doing, a user can select whether or not the user purchases a toner cartridge when the user purchases an image forming apparatus and thus the purchase price of the image forming apparatus can be reduced.

Further, the controller 36 controls printing so as to carry out the second print mode wherein printing is carried out with toner in the toner cartridge 50 only after the toner cartridge 50 is attached to the image forming apparatus main body 12. By so doing, even when the toner cartridge 50 attached to the image forming apparatus main body 12 is wrongly detached, the indication to attach a toner cartridge can be displayed and wrong operation can be prevented.

Here, the controller 36 is designed so as to carry out the aforementioned print mode selection processing S10 for each of toner cartridges 50. For example, it is also possible to design the controller 36 so as to attach only the toner cartridge 50 of black-color as a specific color to the image forming apparatus main body 12, carry out only the second print mode wherein the printing is carried out with toner in the toner cartridge 50 in the case of black-and-white printing, and carry out the first print mode wherein the printing is carried out with the initial toners contained in the toner supply sections 38a or the toner supply mechanisms 62 of the development devices 44 in the case of the printing of the other colors such as magenta, yellow, and cyan. By so doing, a user who does not want color printing can use an image forming apparatus according to the present exemplary embodiment as an image forming apparatus for black-and-white printing without attaching the toner cartridges of magenta, yellow and cyan colors.

As stated above, the present invention can be used for an image forming apparatus that is required to reduce the purchase price.
