Claims
- 1. An image processing system comprising:
- an input unit for inputting an image and converting said image into density data, said density data comprising data in a format manipulable by said image processing system;
- an input controller comprising a buffer and a first CPU for storing in said buffer said density data from said input unit in a compressed format, said input controller comprising thinning circuit means selectably operative to reduce the density of said density data at a predetermined distance, halftoning circuit means for representing said density data as dots, compression circuit means for compressing said reduced density data represented as dots, buffer means for temporarily storing said compressed data and said first CPU for controlling said input controller;
- a work station, comprising an editing input unit, an input operating means, and a second CPU, operational to edit structured data, such as character data, inputted via said editing input unit, and to edit image data inputted via said input operating means;
- a file server comprising a third CPU and a memory means for storing structured data and plural image data, which are sets of images having different resolution for an image, processed in said input controller and being connected to said input controller, said work station, and an image setter means; and
- said image setter means, comprising an attached image output input and a fourth CPU, for receiving said data stored in said file server, converting said data into a printable format, and outputting said data via said attached image output unit;
- whereby said input controller, said work station, said file server, and said image setter means process information independently.
- 2. An image processing system as claimed in claim 1 wherein said editing input unit is a means for preparing a page layout.
- 3. An image processing system as claimed in claim 1 wherein said editing input unit is a word processor.
- 4. An image processing system as claimed in claim 1 wherein said memory means comprises any one or more of a hard disc, a magnetic disc and an electro-optical disc.
- 5. An image processing system as claimed in claim 1 wherein said structured data of said editing input unit is stored in a floppy disc and then inputted into said work station.
- 6. An image processing system as claimed in claim 1 wherein said work station is coupled by an Ethernet bus line to said file server.
- 7. An image processing system as claimed in claim 1 wherein said file server, said input controller and said image setter are connected to each other by an SCSI bus line.
- 8. An image processing system as claimed in claim 1 wherein said image output unit is one of either a high quality image output unit or a laser beam printer.
- 9. An image processing system as claimed in claim 1 wherein said input controller is adapted to compress said density data.
- 10. An image processing system as claimed in claim 1 wherein a plurality of said work stations are connected to each other by an Ethernet.
- 11. An image processing system as claimed in claim 1 wherein each said halftoning circuit means, said compressing circuit means and said buffer means form plural circuits, each circuit being arranged in parallel from one another so that said density data is applied to an input of each circuit, selected ones of said circuits comprising, said thinning circuits means and local memories connected to each said buffer circuits.
- 12. An image processing system as claimed in claim 1 wherein a threshold matrix is used in said halftoning circuit means, and pixel data are compared to threshold values of said threshold matrix and arranged in order of level of said threshold values as well as bit data of said pixel in said compression circuit thereby to rearrange all of said density data in order of said level of the threshold values.
- 13. An image processing system as claimed in claim 1 wherein data communication between said second CPU and third CPU is performed through an interface and a common memory.
- 14. An image processing system as claimed in claim 1 wherein said work station inputs character code data by said input operating means, converts said data into a format manipulable by said image processing system, allows interactive editing of layout data of images via said input operating means, and converts said data into a displayable format described in page description language due to said code data and said layout data and then transfers thus obtained output data to said file server.
- 15. An image processing apparatus comprising:
- an image bus and a CPU bus;
- a CPU having a main memory and being connected to said CPU bus;
- a first memory for storing image information;
- a common memory connected between said CPU bus and said image data bus for transferring bit map data between said CPU and said image bus;
- a first buffer connected to said CPU bus and a third memory connected to said image data bus with an expander connected therebetween, said expander receiving compressed image data from said first buffer and expanding said compressed image data into bit map data, said bit map data being stored in said third memory;
- a second buffer connected to said CPU bus and a second memory connected to said image data bus with a raster image converter connected therebetween, said raster image converter receiving coded data from said second buffer and generating therefrom a character bit map, said character bit map data being stored in said second memory;
- a vector font memory which stores fonts necessary for generating said character bit map by said raster image converter and is connected to said CPU bus;
- a logical operational circuit, connected between said CPU bus and said image data bus, for performing logical operations on said predetermined bit map data stored in said common memory, said bit map data stored in said third memory, and said character bit map data stored in said second memory to generate said image information;
- a sequencer connected between said CPU bus and said image data bus for transferring said image information stored in said first memory to a third buffer;
- an output circuit means connected between said CPU bus and said image data bus via said third buffer in parallel with said sequencer connected to image recording devices via a buffer for controlling the output of image information stored in said third buffer to said image recording devices.
- 16. A sampling method for picture images to be printed comprising the steps of:
- scanning said picture images and outputting scanned data to an A/D converting means;
- digitizing said scanned data by said A/D converting means to images;
- inputting said high resolution digitized data into plural thinning means for converting said digitizing data from said high resolution to a lower resolution, said high resolution digitized data being simultaneously thinned by each of said plural thinning means in a variable amount based on predetermined thresholds assembled as table data which have been inputted into each said plural thinning means to thin said digitized data said thinned digitized data being stored once in a storing means and then being output to a plurality of output devices including a display and a printer;
- inputting said lower resolution data into plural data converting means for converting serial bit data to byte format of 8 bits, said byte format being of dot codes or binary codes; and
- temporarily storing said converted data in plural buffers.
- 17. A sampling method for data as claimed in claim 16 wherein said table data are data on density and tone necessary for display, and data on dot density and tone resolution of the printer for preparing print-ready copy for a final printing.
