a high bandwidth switching means, a plurality of image processing systems, at least one of which is connected to said high bandwidth switching means, an additional processing system connected to said plurality of processing systems, and a plurality of frame storage means, at least one of which is connected to said high bandwidth switching means, wherein each of said frame storage means includes a plurality of disks configured to receive frame stripes; wherein
said high bandwidth switching means is configured to make a connection between a first image processing system and a first frame storage means, wherein said first image processing system and said first frame storage system are both connected to said high bandwidth switching means, and said first processing system reads data stored on said additional processing system that is necessary to access frames stored on said first frame storage means, wherein said data comprises information specifying, for each frame, the clip to which it belongs, its position in said clip and effects to be applied to said frame.
- 11. In an image processing environment comprising
a high bandwidth switching means, a plurality of image processing systems, at least one of which is connected to said high bandwidth switching means, an additional processing system connected to said plurality of processing systems, and a plurality of frame storage means, at least one of which is connected to said high bandwidth switching means; a method of processing image data comprising the steps of:
connecting, via said high bandwidth switching means, a first image processing system to a first frame storage means, wherein said first image processing system and said first frame storage means are both connected to said high bandwidth switching means; reading, at said first image processing system, data stored on said additional processing system; and using, at said first image processing system, said data to access frames stored on said first frame storage means.
- 12. A method as claimed in claim 11, wherein said frames are stored on said frame storage means as clips of frames and said data necessary to access said frames comprises information specifying, for each frame, the clip to which it belongs and its position in said clip.
- 13. A method as claimed in claim 12, wherein said data necessary to access said frames additionally comprises information specifying effects to be applied to each frame.
- 14. A method as claimed in claim 13, wherein said data used to access said frames additionally comprises information specifying, for each frame, the location of image data on said frame storage means that constitutes each said frame.
- 15. A method as claimed in claim 13, wherein for each frame storage means information specifying the location of image data that constitutes each of said frames on said frame storage means is stored on said frame storage means.
- 16. A method according to claim 13, wherein each of said frame storage means includes a plurality of disks configured to receive frame stripes.
- 17. A method according to claim 16, wherein said disks are configured as at least one redundant array of inexpensive disks (RAID).
- 18. Apparatus as claimed in claim 17, wherein said additional processing system is connected to said plurality of image processing systems by a low bandwidth connection.
- 19. A method as claimed in claim 18, wherein said high bandwidth switching means is an electronic fibre optic patch panel.
- 20. In an image processing environment comprising
a high bandwidth switching means, a plurality of image processing systems, at least one of which is connected to said high bandwidth switching means, an additional processing system connected to said plurality of processing systems, and a plurality of frame storage means, at least one of which is connected to said high bandwidth switching means, wherein each of said frame storage means includes a plurality of disks configured to receive frame stripes; a method of processing image data comprising the steps of:
connecting, via said high bandwidth switching means, a first image processing system to a first frame storage means, wherein said first image processing system and said first frame storage means are both connected to said high bandwidth switching means; reading, at said first image processing system, data stored on said additional processing system, wherein said data comprises information specifying, for each frame on said first frame storage means, the clip to which it belongs, its position in said clip and effects to be applied to said frame; and using, at said first image processing system, said data to access frames stored on said first frame storage means.
