Image-reading device

Abstract
An image-reading device includes a reading unit, a displaying unit, a recognition target region setting unit, a recognition target region adding unit, and a character recognizing unit. The recognition target region setting unit sets a recognition target region within the displayed image data to recognize characters. The recognition target region adding unit adds a new recognition target region based on the recognition target region set by the recognition target region setting unit. The character recognizing unit performs character recognition in the recognition target regions.

Claims
  • 1. An image-reading device comprising: a reading unit that reads an original document as image data;a displaying unit that displays the image data read by the reading unit;a recognition target region setting unit that sets a recognition target region within the displayed image data to recognize characters;a recognition target region adding unit that adds a new recognition target region based on the recognition target region set by the recognition target region setting unit; anda character recognizing unit that performs character recognition in the recognition target regions.
  • 2. The image-reading device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the recognition target region setting unit includes a region designating unit that allows a user to designate his/her desired region, the recognition target region setting unit sets the designated region as the recognition target region.
  • 3. The image-reading device as claimed in claim 2, wherein the region designating unit comprises: a recognition target region storing unit storing a plurality of different recognition target regions;a list displaying unit displaying a list of the recognition target regions stored in the recognition target region storing unit; anda selecting unit allowing the user to select his/her desired recognition target region from the displayed list of recognition target regions.
  • 4. The image-reading device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the recognition target region setting unit includes a detecting unit detecting image data targeted for character recognition from the image data, the recognition target region setting unit setting a region where the image data detected by the detecting unit exists as the recognition target region.
  • 5. The image-reading device as claimed in claim 4, wherein the recognition target region storing unit stores data of the recognition target region set by the recognition target region setting unit.
  • 6. The image-reading device as claimed in claim 4, wherein the detecting unit detects image data targeted for character recognition from a prescribed range of the image data.
  • 7. The image-reading device as claimed in claim 1, further comprising an adjusting unit that adjusts a size of the recognition target region set by the recognition target region setting unit.
  • 8. The image-reading device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the displaying unit displays the recognition target regions.
  • 9. The image-reading device as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a confirming unit that allows the user to confirm the recognition target region added by the recognition target region adding unit.
  • 10. The image-reading device as claimed in claim 7, further comprising a confirming unit that allows the user to confirm the recognition target region adjusted by the adjusting unit.
  • 11. The image-reading device as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a commanding unit that allows the user to input his/her instruction to execute an operation to read the original document to execute character recognition using the recognition target regions.
  • 12. The image-reading device as claimed in claim 11, further comprising an executing unit executing the operation to read the original document and to execute the character recognition using the recognition target regions based on the instruction issued by the commanding unit.
  • 13. An image-reading device comprising: a reading unit that reads an original document as image data;a displaying unit that displays the image data read by the reading unit;a recognition target region setting unit that sets a recognition target region within the displayed image data to recognize characters;a character recognizing unit that performs character recognition in the recognition target region, the character recognizing unit including a page recognizing unit recognizing a page number provided in the recognition target region; anda reading error determining unit determining whether or not a page reading error has occurred based on recognition results by the page recognizing unit.
  • 14. The image-reading device as claimed in claim 13, further comprising a page number table storing a recognized page number; wherein the reading error determining unit determines that a page reading error has occurred when the recognized page number is already stored in the page number table.
  • 15. The image-reading device as claimed in claim 14, further comprising a reading error handling unit performing a prescribed action when the reading error determining unit determines that a page reading error has occurred.
  • 16. The image-reading device as claimed in claim 15, further comprising a storing unit storing the image data read by the reading unit; wherein when the reading error determining unit determines that a page reading error has occurred, the storing unit fails to store the image data.
  • 17. The image-reading device as claimed in claim 15, further comprising an image storing unit storing the image data; wherein when the reading error determining unit determines that a page reading error has occurred, the reading error handling unit overwrites image data of the relevant page number already stored in the image storing unit.
  • 18. The image-reading device as claimed in claim 15, further comprising an image storing unit storing the image data; wherein when the reading error determining unit determines that a page reading error has occurred, the reading error handling unit adds data to the page number table indicating that there are a plurality of entries of image data with the relevant page number and saves the plurality of entries of image data in the image storing unit.
  • 19. The image-reading device as claimed in claim 15, further comprising an image storing unit storing the image data; wherein when the reading error determining unit determines that a page reading error has occurred, the reading error handling unit adds information to a name of the relevant image data indicating that there are a plurality of entries of image data with the relevant page number and the reading error handling unit saves the relevant image data in the image storing unit.
  • 20. The image-reading device as claimed in claim 14, wherein the page number table includes information indicating whether or not the page number is recognized from the image data; the image-reading device further comprising:a sorting unit sorting the image data according to the information indicating whether or not the page number is recognized, and the page number; anda storing unit storing the image data based on the results of sorting by the sorting unit.
  • 21. The image-reading device as claimed in claim 14, wherein the page number table includes information indicating the number of entries of image data with the relevant page number; and the reading error determining unit determines that a page reading error has occurred based on the total number of image data entries and the page number included in the page number table.
  • 22. An image-reading method comprising: reading an original document as image data;displaying the image data read by the reading step;setting a recognition target region within the displayed image data to recognize characters;adding a new recognition target region based on the recognition target region set in the recognition target region setting step; andperforming character recognition in the recognition target regions.
  • 23. The image-reading method as claimed in claim 22, wherein the setting step includes allowing a user to designate his/her desired region, the recognition target region setting step includes a setting step for setting the designated region as the recognition target region.
  • 24. The image-reading method as claimed in claim 23, wherein the allowing step comprises: displaying a list of the recognition target regions stored in a recognition target region storing unit; andallowing the user to select his/her desired recognition target region from the displayed list of recognition target regions.
  • 25. The image-reading method as claimed in claim 22, wherein the recognition target region setting step includes detecting image data targeted for character recognition from the image data, and setting a region where the image data detected in the detecting step exists as the recognition target region.
  • 26. The image-reading method as claimed in claim 25, further comprising storing the recognition target region set in the recognition target region setting step.
  • 27. The image-reading method as claimed in claim 25, wherein the detecting step includes detecting image data targeted for character recognition from a prescribed range of the image data.
  • 28. The image-reading method as claimed in claim 22, further comprising adjusting a size of the recognition target region set in the recognition target region setting step.
  • 29. The image-reading method as claimed in claim 22, wherein the displaying step further comprising displaying the recognition target regions.
  • 30. The image-reading method as claimed in claim 22, further comprising allowing the user to confirm the recognition target region added in the recognition target region adding step.
  • 31. The image-reading method as claimed in claim 28, further comprising allowing the user to confirm the recognition target region adjusted in the adjusting step.
  • 32. The image-reading method as claimed in claim 22, further comprising allowing the user to input his/her instruction to execute an operation to read the original document to execute character recognition using the recognition target regions.
  • 33. The image-reading method as claimed in claim 32, further comprising executing the operation to read the original document and to execute the character recognition step using the recognition target regions based on the instruction issued in the allowing step.
  • 34. An image-reading method comprising: reading an original document as image data;displaying the image data read by the reading step;setting a recognition target region within the displayed image data to recognize characters;performing character recognition in the recognition target region, the performing character recognition including recognizing a page number provided in the recognition target region; anddetermining whether or not a page reading error has occurred based on recognition results of the page number recognizing.
  • 35. The image-reading method as claimed in claim 34, further comprising storing a recognized page number in a page number table; wherein the reading error determining step determines that a page reading error has occurred when the recognized page number is already stored in the page number table.
  • 36. The image-reading method as claimed in claim 35, further comprising handling a reading error by performing prescribed action when it is determined that a page reading error has occurred in the reading error determining step.
  • 37. The image-reading method as claimed in claim 36, further comprising storing the image data read in the reading step, and skipping the image data storing step when it is determined that a page reading error has occurred in the reading error determining step.
  • 38. The image-reading method as claimed in claim 36, further comprising storing the image data; wherein the handling step includes overwriting image data of the relevant page number stored in the image data storing step when it is determined that a page reading error has occurred in the reading error determining step.
  • 39. The image-reading method as claimed in claim 35, further comprising storing the image data; wherein the reading error handling step includes adding data to the page number table indicating that there are a plurality of entries of image data with the relevant page number and storing the plurality of entries of image data.
  • 40. The image-reading method as claimed in claim 35, further comprising storing the image data; wherein the reading error handling step includes adding information to a name of the relevant image data indicating that there are a plurality of entries of image data with the relevant page number and storing the relevant image, when it is determined that a page reading error has occurred in the reading error determining step.
  • 41. The image-reading method as claimed in claim 35, wherein the page number storing step includes storing, in the page number table, information indicating whether or not the page number is recognized from the image data; the image-reading method further comprising:sorting the image data according to the information indicating whether the page number is recognized, and the page number; andstoring the image data based on the results of sorting in the sorting step.
  • 42. The image-reading method as claimed in claim 35, wherein the page number storing step includes storing, in the page number table, information indicating the number of entries of image data with the relevant page number; and the reading error determining step determines that a page reading error has occurred based on the total number of image data entries and the page number included in the page number table.
  • 43. A computer program recorded on a computer readable recording medium, executable by a computer comprising: instructions for reading an original document as image data;instructions for displaying the image data read by the reading step;instructions for setting a recognition target region within the displayed image data to recognize characters;instructions for adding a new recognition target region based on the recognition target region set in the instructions for setting; andinstructions for performing character recognition in the recognition target regions.
  • 44. A computer program recorded on a computer readable recording medium, executable by a computer comprising: instructions for reading an original document as image data;instructions for displaying the image data read by the reading step;instructions for setting a recognition target region within the displayed image data to recognize characters;instructions for performing character recognition in the recognition target region, the instructions for performing character recognition including instructions for recognizing a page number provided in the recognition target region; andinstructions for determining whether or not a page reading error has occurred based on recognition results of the instructions for recognizing the page number.
