Claims
- 1. An image recording apparatus comprising:
- raster scan display screen for displaying an image defined by electronic data, the display screen being arranged to display the image over a period of time by the scanning of a point of light over the display screen;
- a focusing means for focusing the image displayed on the display screen onto a photographic film;
- a masking means positionable in relation to the display screen and the film, the masking means comprising a moving plate having an aperture; and
- a positioning means for maintaining an alignment between the aperture and the point of light during said scanning to allow light from said point of light to pass through the aperture to the film and to prevent unwanted light caused by the displaying of the image on the display screen from being focused onto said film,
- wherein the display screen comprises a multiplicity of scan lines over which the point of light is scanned and the aperture comprises an elongate slot disposed substantially parallel to said scan lines and having a length sufficient to allow to pass therethrough light from the point of light as it traverses and entire scan line and having a width which limits the light transmitted therethrough mainly to the scan line being traversed by the light.
- 2. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said mask is adjacent the display screen.
- 3. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said slot has a length at least equal to that of one of said scan lines as measured on said display screen.
- 4. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a framestore having a multiplicity of storage locations for storing said electronic data.
- 5. An apparatus as claimed in claim 4, wherein the positioning means comprises an address scanner for generating horizontal and vertical scanning signals for controlling the scanning of the point of light over the display screen and for generating corresponding address signals for addressing storage locations in said framestore.
- 6. An apparatus as claimed in claim 5, wherein the positioning means further comprises:
- a servo motor coupled to the masking means for moving the same relative to the display screen and the film; and
- controlling means connected to the servo motor and to the address scanner and responsive to said address signals for synchronizing the location of the masking means with the scanning of the point of light over the display screen.
- 7. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the focusing means further comprises filtering means to enable different color separations to be focused individually onto said film.
- 8. A device for use in an image recording apparatus in which electronic data representing an image is used to drive a scanning display to display the image with a photographic film being exposed to the displayed image in order to record the image on said film, the device comprising:
- a movable mask positionable in relation to the scanning display and the film so as to allow only a portion of the image from the display to pass through the mask, the mask comprising a plate having an aperture; and
- a mechanism for positioning the mask relative to the display and the film, the mechanism being arranged to synchronize the positioning of the mask with the scanning of the image on the scanning display so as to confine the light passing through the mask to a limited region including the point of the image currently being scanned;
- wherein the scanning display comprises a multiplicity of parallel scan lines and the aperture comprises an elongate slot parallel to said scan lines and having a sufficient length to allow light from an entire one of said scan lines on the display to pass through the slot to the film.
- 9. A device as claimed in claim 8, wherein the mechanism comprises a servo motor and a control circuit for driving the servo motor, the control circuit being connectable to the scanning display for synchronizing the positioning of the mask with the scanning of the image on the scanning display.
- 10. A device as claimed in claim 8, wherein the mechanism comprises a servo motor and a control circuit for driving the servo motor, the control circuit being connectable to the scanning display for synchronizing the positioning of the mask with the scanning of the image on the display.
- 11. An apparatus for transferring an image defined as electronic signals onto a light sensitive medium, the apparatus comprising:
- a raster scan display responsive to said electronic signals for displaying the image represented thereby in a raster scan sequence, the raster scan display having a display surface at which said image is displayed;
- a movable mask having an aperture and being positioned in relation to the raster scan display and the light sensitive medium;
- a mechanism for moving the mask relative to the display and the light sensitive medium such that the aperture is moved substantially in synchronism with the scanning of the image on the display; and
- optics for directing the displayed image onto said light sensitive medium,
- wherein the raster scan display comprises a multiplicity of parallel scan lines and said aperture comprises an elongate slot having a length sufficient to allow to pass therethrough light from the point of light as it traverses an entire scan line as measured on the display, and the mask is moved in a direction transverse to the length of a scan line substantially in synchronism with the scanning of said lines in the display.
- 12. An apparatus as claimed in claim 11, wherein said light sensitive medium comprises a photographic film.
- 13. An apparatus as claimed in claim 12, wherein said slot has a width limiting the light transmitted therethrough to the film to mainly the scan line being traversed by the light spot.
- 14. An apparatus as claimed in claim 12, wherein said slot has a length at least equal to that of one of said scan lines as measured on said display screen.
- 15. An apparatus as claimed in claim 11, wherein said slot has a width limiting the light transmitted therethrough to the film to mainly the scan line being traversed by the light spot.
- 16. An apparatus as claimed in claim 11, wherein said slot has a length at least equal to that of one of said scan lines as measured on said display screen.
- 17. An apparatus as claimed in claim 11 further comprising a store for storing said electronic signals defining said image in a multiplicity of storage locations.
- 18. An apparatus as claimed in claim 17, further comprising addressing means for generating horizontal and vertical scanning address signals for control of the raster scan display, and corresponding address data for addressing storage locations in said store.
- 19. An apparatus as claimed in claim 18, wherein the means for moving the mask comprises a motor and associated control circuitry responsive to the address data from the addressing means for driving the mask substantially in synchronism with the scanned point of the scanned point of the display.
- 20. An image recording apparatus, which comprises:
- a raster scan display having a screen which displays images defined by electronic data by means of a light spot scanning along scan lines;
- a focusing optical system which projects the scanning light spot along an optical path onto a photographic film to thereby record the images on film;
- a movable mask intercepting said optical path, said mask having a slot which is substantially parallel to said scan lines and is configured to substantially confine the light projected on said film by said optical system mainly to the light generated by said light spot at a scan line scanned with said light spot; and
- a driving mechanism moving said mask in a direction substantially perpendicular to the scan lines to match movement of the light spot in a direction perpendicular to the scan lines and thereby expose the film to light generated by the light spot at successive scan lines.
- 21. The apparatus according to claim 20, wherein said movable mask is adjacent said display screen.
- 22. The apparatus according to claim 20, wherein said slot has a length in a direction parallel to the scan lines allowing light from at least an entire scan line to pass through the slot at one time.
- 23. The apparatus according to claim 22, wherein said slot has a length in a direction parallel to the scan lines which is at least as long as the length of a scan line as measured at said screen.
- 24. The apparatus according to claim 20, wherein said movable mask is positioned over said display screen and is movable in a vertical direction corresponding to vertical scanning of said raster scan display.
- 25. The apparatus according to claim 20, wherein said optical system includes an optical filter and an optical lens and said movable mask is at one side of said optical filter.
- 26. The apparatus according to claim 20, wherein said slot has a width, in a direction perpendicular to said scan lines, selected so as to substantially prevent light from portions of the display screen that are vertically spaced from a current scan line by more than a selected distance from exposing the film while the light spot is scanning the current scan line.
- 27. A device for use in an image recording apparatus in which electronic data representing a plurality of image elements defining an image is used to drive a scanning display to display the image elements in a raster scan sequence of scan lines, with a photographic film being exposed through a focusing optical system to the displayed image elements in order to record the image on said film, each of the displayed image elements having two portions, a desired light dot portion and an unwanted light portion which is spaced from said desired light dot portion, the device comprising:
- a movable mask which is between said scanning display and said film and prevents at least a substantial portion of said unwanted light portion from passing through said mask while passing at least a substantial portion of said desired light dot portion through the mask;
- said mask having an elongated slot through which the desired light dot portion passes for an entire scan line without requiring a displacement of the slot in a direction along the scan line; and
- a mask moving mechanism connected to said movable mask to move the mask in synchronism with the scanning of the image on the scanning display in a direction transverse to said scan lines so as to expose the film substantially only with light resulting from said desired light dot portion.
- 28. The device according to claim 27, wherein said movable mask is positioned adjacent said scanning display.
- 29. The device according to claim 27, wherein said mask moving mechanism includes a servo motor and a control circuit for driving the servo motor, the control circuit being coupled with the scanning display for synchronizing the positioning of the mask with the scanning of the image on the scanning display.
